Everyone keeps saying how pretty Ariana is and all that, which I agree with.
But how about ZEDD?! He is too dang adorable!
EDIT: Oh, and this is easily one of my favorite songs right now. Ariana kills it with the impressive vocals and Zedd kills it with the brilliant production.

I understand from a business perspective that her pulling a "slave" would be jarring for the public because they do think that way regardless, but people seem to forget that the exact same thing happened with Britney. But Britney looked like this at the age of 19. Ariana Grande looked like this at 19. There's really no comparison. At all. She physically looks like a kid, she's barely 5'0. It's not really a "boundary" placed upon her, she can try to be sexy all she wants, it'll just feel uncomfortable. Britney successfully pulled of the lolita image because of how easily she could transform into a more mature looking woman by simply wearing a crop top or by exuding sex appeal on stage. Ariana doesn't have sex appeal on or off the stage and genuinely looks like a little girl awkwardly playing dress up. Uh, there's very clearly bias in the pictures you selected. Point blank: the general response to this video is that she looked hot whether you agree or not, and while you're entitled to your opinion on what looks good on her, I just don't agree and I think the majority opinion is shifting.

I mean let's be real, when Justin Bieber started making the transition into adulthood as a visual artist nobody really cared and he pulled it off fine in spite of having the perpetual babyface-- he just wound up being a douche which kind of ruined it. I just don't see why there's such strong opposition against the idea that Ariana could too.

You know, I was really hoping for Ariana Grande to be this enigmatic popstar that we havent seen in about 5 years (Lady Gaga). I feel like this girl has everything- the voice (reminiscent of Mariah, the look (early Britney) and a great set of hits from this album (similar to Britney + Gaga's first run). But the videos for Problem + Break Free are huge let downs for me. She literally has ZERO stage presence and I just feel so uncomfortable watching any performance of hers either via video or live. Seriously they should have this girl put in a dance studio for a month minimum so that she can learn some choreography and work the performances.
I think this girl has a huge potential. She has paired up with some of the biggest names this era- Iggy Azalea, Zedd, Nicki Minaj, and Big Sean. There is certainly a buzz around this girl and whoever is managing her make sure that she is hitting all the necessary points to become a huge pop star. If she keeps this basicness up, she is going to be so forgettable in a few years and only known for her catchy pop tunes that no can put a face to.
If she learns some choregraphy & stage presence- she may be able to be my favorite popstar since Britney but I'm not going to hold my breath.

She was going through a difficult time with her grandpa being terminally ill so...no one here can really say whether or not there will be some choreography for future performances like we saw with Problem. However, she did tweet about rehearsals for the VMAs and other upcoming appearances recently.
She looks great in the video. This song better hit #1 on the Hot 100.

Somebody also had mentioned I believe a Kylie Minogue video for the source of inspiration for Grande's video. You may want to take a look at this opening scene from Barbarella.
That's what I mean when I say that the new very young generation may not yet have a full view of pop culture from decades ago. I mean that's close to 50 years ago!! So it's perfectly fine not to know and it's always cool to discover.

Been watching the video for the umpteenth time, and I'm so stupid that I didn't see it before, but she looks a bit like Cheryl. <3

I just will never quite get the Ariana/Britney thing. I see zero Britney Spears comparisons as well. Britney was a STRONG dancer and personality, and was never great on vocals... Ariana struggles with everything but vocals! The main reason I liked this video was because she looked AMAZING and due to its cheesy nature, it helped me fit "Break Free" a song that totally doesn't go with her sound or image, into her throwback schtick. I like it!

I'm also baffled at the Britney comparisons. If anything, I can see more similarities with Christina Aguilera: petit singer with a great voice, but not that great of a dancer, with small frame and babyface, cool safe pop tunes and ok videos. None thought she could pull sexy off -but she still tried it with Dirrrty. The main focus was her voice tho. Ariana is improving her presence and having fun with BF. I am liking her and I think it's great to have her as a new Pop force, especially because she can really sing -although I hope she improves her enunciation :)

Still waiting on her to 1. Make a good video 2. put some expression into her face. The break free video is not sexy and embarrassing at the same time.

That was a really great video! It was friendly enough for her young audience, but fast enough to not be boring. She still needs to stop being dolled up so much and also needs to look into some new poses and facial expressions, but at least they're trying. It was also good to see Zedd not looking like a coked-up gremlin like he sometimes does in his pictures.

I just will never quite get the Ariana/Britney thing. That's b/c your stubborn ass is like "I think one is hot and the other isn't so it's invalid even though that has nothing to do with the point" Like it's not about their talent or strong suits, but how they're being marketed and the way their image is progressing.

However XTina is a MUCH better dancer and has better stage presence than her. I think Ariana's vocals are similar to XTina's with a touch of Mariah and her somewhat uncomfortable stage presence (including movements) are similar to Mariah's.

I agree with what you're saying but I see her growing into her persona, ala Rihanna. The same lack of presence or personality is what Rihanna lacked early on and was criticized fir (among other things) but today, I'd say it's her personality that's probably her biggest selling point. The trajectory and management of Ariana's career is very similar, not instantaneous superstardom but a buildup to it. Give her time. She will be the next pop sensation.

Saw a segment on ET the other night titled "The Power of Ariana Grande" They predicted her to be the next pop superstar. I see it happening right before my very eyes!

Does it really matter what the video is copying? The Video is good and the song is a jam that will last thru the rest of the summer and the beginning of fall. Nearly every video story has been used nearly many times. I don't see the Ariana and Britney thing either, usually it was Miley/Britney or Selena Gomez/Britney.

This is the first Ari song I genuinely love. The video is nice and will definitely help for a higher Hot 100 peak.
I can't @ people bashing her and saying she copied the one or the other. She's too petite and cute for all that and she's not even faking it. Just let the girl be.

Jennette stays trying to drag her in her new webshow, What's Next For Sarah? The third episode features an appearance by Gloriana, a self-absorbed, dim-witted popstar who is as entitled as she is offensive.
Petty.

If she learns some choregraphy & stage presence- she may be able to be my favorite popstar since Britney but I'm not going to hold my breath. I don't actually see the Britney comparison at all - Mariah makes so much more sense - but if we are going to compare the two, I'll take the one who can actually sing over the one who can dance any day. That said, you're obviously right that her dancing is unbelievably awkward. But what makes it worse is that she's doing these choregraphed bits that really expose everything. Neither Mariah nor Katy Perry can truly dance, but their movement is either deliberately goofy or built to allow their sex appeal to overshadow the limitations in the movement. Ariana has a nearly perfect face, but she's not the least bit sexy. And so she can't compensate for the bad dancing. The One Direction guys can't dance - and they don't. And they still sell out stadiums. Why can't she take that approach? Move around a little bit - but don't take part in these horrifically geeky choreography routines that put the attention on her weakness. Frankly, though, I think the bigger problem with Ariana Grande is her utter inability to speak. She has absolutely ZERO charisma in her interviews or awards acceptance speeches. Between cycling through fifteen different accents and never having anything interesting to say, she's the conversational equivalent of paint drying.

I think her awkward dancing is kind of charming tbh. It's like she knows she's a bad dancer but is going for it anyway. Good for her.

I like the video. It's cute, and I can see some progress being made from past videos.
I understand the Brit comparisons completely. It's not a musical comparison, in which comparisons to Christina and Mariah would make a lot more sense, but a career comparison. They both started out on a kids show, immediately received the "cute good girl" image, released a first single that exceeded initial expectations, received tons of buzz and publicity, and surpassed all of their teen star peers in terms of commercial success. Ari's now at the point where she's gonna try to shed some of her innocent image and start showing her sexuality a little more, much like Britney.
Now I don't see Ariana completely following Britney's career forever, but thus far, they've been pretty similar.
Christina comparisons work as well.
