The way this exploded is sort of peculiar, no?
Nicki is no factor on pop radio at this point, and Ariana has two songs already in decent rotation (and neither experienced this type of rise). So, the Jessie J. factor is what has led this? Weird.
It's performing like a Taylor Swift lead single or Lady Gaga circa 2010.

Maybe they have a radio deal, it won't be surprised. Radio deals have never lasted this long in the past. Ariana Grande was a huge draw in for this initially. Yes, she has two songs in the top 15 already, but when you have that start power right now, radio doesn't really care about oversaturation (just look at *Teenage Dream*, *Good Girl Gone Bad*, or and *The Fame*, for example). Initial reaction and word-of-mouth is definitely helping it along to. The fact that it shot to #1 on iTunes and is still there also doesn't hurt. The hype for this song has been drawn up really well too. The marketing behind this song was very well done.

Individually, only Ariana Grande is a massive pop radio star right now, but they collectively turn this into a "superstar collaboration" that radio is eating up.

Yeah, I don't think the drop will be that severe. I'm thinking -1000 spins maybe... or maybe it's time to do another one day radio deal.

Yeah, I don't think the drop will be that severe. I'm thinking -1000 spins maybe... or maybe it's time to do another one day radio deal. It got 1288 spins its first day. It currently is getting around 650 spins per day. 650-1288=-638. So we can expect around -640 tomorrow.

Well? It is. Those spins are legit. Tomorrow will probably be the D8 effect (despite being D9).

Well? It is. Those spins are legit. Tomorrow will probably be the D8 effect (despite being D9). If you're going to refer to the day as the date of the update rather than the date measured by that update, then it would never be a "Day 8" effect. It would always be Day 9. Today's update, the day 8 update, is the first to measure a full seven day's worth of airplay. The song received its first official spin on Tuesday, July 29, and this update measures from July 29-August 4. Tomorrow's update will be the first to replace the inflated opening Tuesday with a more organic day of airplay.

Tomorrow's update will be the first to replace the inflated opening Tuesday with a more organic day of airplay. You're missing the point of why it's called the 'day 8 effect'. Normally these big premiere event songs don't HAVE this weird one day where it gets single or double-digit spins, which results in some major spin/bullet/audience crashes on the 8th day on airplay, because the song's airplay that day does not match the level of activity experienced in that first day out on radio.

You're once again confusing Day 8 of airplay with the Day 8 airplay update. Day 8 of airplay does not show up until TOMORROW'S report, which measures airplay from Wednesday, July 30 (Day 2) to Tuesday, August 5 (Day 8). The day 8 update, which yields today's chart, measures airplay from Tuesday, July 29 (Day 1) to Monday, August 4 (Day 7). Day 8 is not yet included in the chart. We therefore have not seen the impact of Day 8 vs. Day 1. We'll see it tomorrow, which is when the potential "day 8 effect" comes into play

I think the day 8 effect will be minimal. The song is actually good and people like it.

We therefore have not seen the impact of Day 8 vs. Day 1. We'll see it tomorrow, which is when the potential "day 8 effect" comes into play What you're not getting, though, is that it had a few random spins on Monday, July 28th. That technically makes today day 8. I think the day 8 effect will be minimal. The song is actually good and people like it. I would love for this to gain 1k in spins tomorrow. It's simple math. Again: It got 1288 spins its first day. It currently is getting around 650 spins per day. 650-1288=-638. So we can expect around -640 tomorrow.

This just needs to hit #1 on the Hot 100 before Taylor's new single comes out!
