This song is overhyped and I think the public is reacting to it. Yes it's an event record, but it's being forced down everyone's throats like we have no other choice but to like it - when in reality it's just a standard Pop song. The quality just isn't there.

That must be why it's #3 on iTunes, has gotten over 10 million plays on Youtube the past week, and is #4 on Spotify with 2,637,533 plays?

Listen, I'm not saying this song isn't good or that certain people love it. iTunes definitely speaks to broad appeal, but Spotify and Youtube less so - who's to say it's not repeat plays? i.e. a narrow segment that's VERY into the song keeps replaying it. Also, wasn't the video just released? That initial interest will also account for a large portion (if not all) of the 10 million views.

This is always a perspective I don't get--that people are somehow being tricked en masse to like a certain song. Isn't it more likely that you just don't like the song on its merits, but a lot of people do for no other reason than not everyone is the same and has the same taste?

A song doesn't become so massive because people are being forced to stream, download or listen to it.

Well, a song can end being a hit for the most stupid reasons, Harlem Shake is a big example of that. This was very hyped, but i think the reasons are very different. It's true that i didn't expec such kind of reaction to a Jessie J song (she really messed up her last era not releasing anything after domino, even when it was crystal clear that people liked Who you are) but it's the kind of song that radio usually love, three different divas singing out of her minds. It has it all to a big reception, and the fact that Ariana is a radio darling right now sure helps too

Labor Day weekend really slowed this down a lot. It was already slowing down before the weekend, but not nearly this much. I noticed it seemed like it was slowing down as well but it just got a +118 for yesterday so maybe it was because of the long weekend it's gains were less.

Yeah People have to come to terms that what others like may be what they think it's not quality material. Like, I don't understand the appeal of This is what we do, but it seems to have a good reaction from the public. I can't say it's because radio is forcing it. I did think that Birthday was more like that given its not impressive sales or streaming after radio gave it KPUs. Different scenario from Bang Bang.

I think it would be foolish to act like labels don't try - and have some success at - pushing some songs and artists to the public. Is it not the whole point of the PR industry to change public perceptions? I don't think it's farfetched to suggest that a record label/media conglomerate might be forcing this song. Maybe they're having more success than I might be seeing so far - true. I just don't see how that explanation is any more or less likely than the difference in success due to tastes being different.

There's an article on Billboard on how the MTV VMA's impacted sales. The biggest winner...
Among the VMA-performed songs this year, the biggest unit gainer was "Bang Bang," by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Minaj, which increased by 85,000 downloads (to 244,000 for the week -- up 54 percent).

From Billboard:
Thanks to Grande's debut atop the Billboard 200 and the trio's hit song, the singers all surge on the Artist 100 chart.
As Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J soar 9-4 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Bang Bang," and as Grande blasts onto the Billboard 200 at No. 1 with her sophomore album My Everything, each of the three divas darts up the Billboard Artist 100.
The Artist 100 provides the first weekly ranking dedicated to measuring artist activity across Billboard's most influential charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Billboard 200 albums chart and the Social 50. The Artist 100 blends data measuring album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.
Grande logs a second week at the Artist 100 summit (7-1), with the majority (60 percent) of her chart points from album sales. Her My Everything arrives with 169,000 sold, while her debut set, last year's Yours Truly, vaults 71-40 on the Billboard 200 with an 84 percent surge to 7,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Digital song sales follow at 20 percent, led by the threesome's "Bang," which gains by 54 percent to 244,000 sold. Grande, Minaj and Jessie J performed the track as part of their opening medley on the MTV Video Music Awards (Aug. 24).
Minaj reaches a new Artist 100 highpoint (3-2), with digital song sales the top driver (48 percent) of her profile. In addition to "Bang," "Anaconda" -- also a part of the trio's VMAs performance -- gains by 57 percent to 188,000 sold. With the latter track atop the Streaming Songs chart for a second week (17.3 million U.S. streams, down 46 percent, according to Nielsen BDS; its video premiered on Aug. 19), streaming accounts for her second-biggest slice of Artist 100 points (31 percent).
Meanwhile, Jessie J reaches the Artist 100's top 40 for the first time (64-33), with digital song sales marking her greatest chart metric (60 percent).
Grande grabs the Artist 100's top spot by dethroning Taylor Swift, who dips 1-3 after a week at No. 1. Rounding out the chart's top 10, Sam Smith holds at No. 4; Iggy Azalea keeps at No. 5; Meghan Trainor is a non-mover at No. 6; Maroon 5 lifts 8-7; Beyonce bounds into the top 10 for the first time (23-8), fueled heavily by download sales following her medley of songs from her self-titled album on the VMAs; Wiz Khalifa descends 2-9; and Ed Sheeran shoots 16-10.
