Yeah, I'm wondering if the songs should be divided by whether they're intentionally disturbing or unintentional, such as Blurred Lines.

Fancy's lyrics are arrogant and obnoxious, as someone pointed out which was exactly what I was thinking. They're not frightening/disturbing or sexually graphic to the point of being repulsive but they can still come off as very rude and unpleasant so that's good enough to be on here and I feel like it's a step higher from other rap songs in terms of rubbing it in your face kinda thing. Get Lucky is not disturbing either, but it has a very clear message in terms of being very sexual (should be obvious what is meant by "we're up all night to get lucky"). One interpretation of All of Me is that, as someone said, it has a bit of a stalker-ish attitude (and thus you could add "Every Breath You Take" by The Police to this list). Another interpretation is that he talking about what a bitch she is and how bad she treats him and that he still loves her anyway despite those huge flaws in her character...that's somewhat disturbing to me. But like I said it is all about how you see it and everyone does see thing differently and that includes interpreting some song lyrics differently. That qualifies. Disturbing does render lyrics bad lol. When I hear "bad" I think "poor quality." This thread would bring about a much more interesting discussion if "bad" was omitted from the thread title. Yeah but then we would have to exclude a lot of songs like "Fancy" and we would very quickly run out of ideas so I decided to make it more broad so that it would be just generally songs that could REALLY do without the lyrics where they severely bring down the song I guess haha

Nah, they all qualify as catchy songs with bad/disturbing lyrics I just made a general thread that way we don't run out of ideas so I didn't want to make it too specific

"Birthday": It's time to bring out the big balloons! What's so disturbing about Katy Perry's boobs? Pretty sure she's talking about the guy in that line (in the preceding line she says "let me get you in your birthday suit").

She is in fact talking about her boobs... It's basically saying "Hey, you get naked, and I'll show you my tits! Happy Birthday "

Disturbing does render lyrics bad lol. I disagree. Songs can have disturbing lyrics while still being brilliant, well-written songs. Garbage's "#1 Crush" is one of the first songs to come to my mind. Yeah, the lyrics are definitely disturbing, but they do an excellent job of depicting the thoughts of a psychotic person who is obsessed with someone. It's just like a movie or a TV show- they can have a disturbing plot, but that doesn't mean that it's a bad plot or a poorly written one.

It depends...while I acknowledge the meaningfulness and depth of the lyrics in the verses of "Pumped Up Kicks" the song's lyrics do make me feel uncomfortable and somewhat frightened...I guess I should be more specific and say that "bad" can also mean "very controversial".

Half of these songs don't even have disturbing lyrics... And 'bad' and 'disturbing' aren't really interchangeable words.

It's just about being clear. I don't think disturbing is bad. I find Black Swan to be a disturbing movie, and a good one.

The final track on Blue October's Approaching Normal album called The End is pretty disturbing since he describes committing murder in the lyrics. I think the song is an excellent song even though I can't relate to it at all but when I hear it, I see very distinct imagery that goes along with it. In no way do I think it's a bad song because of it.

A couple of Pink songs could be seen as contextually disturbing. 'Please Don't Leave Me' for one - on the last season of Australian Idol, there was a week with Pink songs as a theme, and one of the male contestants sang that song. It was brought up that, coming from Pink, lyrics like 'you're my perfect little punching bag' seem okay coming from her, because it can be taken just as her tough attitude, but there's some rather unfortunate implications for a man to be singing the same lyric - it's a double standard issue where the female-on-male abuse can be passed off as Pink being Pink, whereas it's far more concerning if it's male-on-female abuse.
'Cause what it boils down to, is the song is about 'I'm a jerk and I could hurt you at the drop of a hat, please stick around so I can hurt you more'. Now, I really don't think Pink would be the person to advocate abusive relationships but it's all about context - and while the song itself is some slickly-produced, seemingly inoffensive pop song there's some implications about abuse that are questionable.

^ yeah I agree, I never really liked "Please Don't Leave Me" partially (perhaps even mainly) because of that...

"Up!" by Shania Twain is a catchy song and I really enjoy it. The lyrics of the first verse though are a serious WTF moment though:

The lyrics and the faux-accent delivery are awful but I'd be lying if I said the chorus wasn't catchy.

Well, now that this thread has been revived, I guess we can add Mood and Stay to this list. Both are very catchy and upbeat but with incredibly dickish lyrics.
As for a classic song in this territory, Hey Ya! by OutKast. Fantastic song, catchy as sin, but the lyrics on their own are soul-crushingly sad.

Those songs have some questionable lines...

Does Little Dark Age count? The song is very catchy but it is also pretty clear that the lyrics are grim

The first artist that came to mind was Bertine Zetlitz. She always wrote really catchy pop songs, but her lyrics usually had undercurrents of obsession and violence. She's just straight-up stalking someone in "Want You" (with an ABBA level chorus no less). And I still want to know what she has stashed behind in the shed in "Draggin Me Down."

Lilly Allen is great for this category: Smile Alfie Everything's Just Wonderful Everyone's At It The Fear Not Fair f**k You Such catchy melodies but depressing lyrics! How I love this deliberate contrast in so many of her songs! - dark, depressing, or even disturbing themes backed by such cutesy vintage instrumentation. Some of my favorites also include "Knock Em Out" (a song about desperate attempts to dodge sleazy guys at a pub shouldn't be this catchy, let alone have such a comedic tone to it), "LDN" (can't believe you forgot to mention it - the textbook example for this thread, and I love it so much!), "Not Big" (ridiculing a subject's sexual performance usually elicits a sour reaction from me, but this song just works), and “Cheryl Tweedy” (its production is less sugary, but I do think it still applies). And that's just talking about her debut album - can't wait to further explore her discography! There's also "Friend Of Mine", which firmly applies in the disturbing/upsetting side. Beautiful production and melodies, but her dissing a former friend struggling with drug addictions came off as really insensitive, and just makes me feel sad. Songs like "Alfie" show she can take the piss off someone but still show she cares for them, and ruthless tunes like "Not Big" are at least justified by her ex spreading rumours about her sexual performance as well. But "Friend Of Mine" just takes it too far, and for me, it's a clear low point in an otherwise great debut record.
