I don't think he's stepping out of the spotlight, but having his own solo career. Which, yeah, who didn't see that coming? I just didn't think it would be this soon.

Zayn is easily the best vocalist in 1D. Some of those notes are just insane. This is definitely the beginning of the end, at least mainstream wise.

I always knew that One Direction as a group was slowly coming to an end, but this is definitely going to be a loss for 1D and I wouldn't be surprised if the group breaks up and goes their separate ways after this tour.

I knew he'd be the first solo star of the group so what really surprises me is that the label let it happen? I thought they had to sign their lives away for the foreseeable future so perhaps it's possible that he was fired? His (alleged) demons have been well documented in the press. Anyway, Zayn's love is R&B/garage music and he has the vocals that suit it, so I can't blame him for rebelling against the stadium rock and folky direction that the powers that be steered 1D into lately.

Not surprised.
In other news, I'd love for Louis to snog me.

I don't think he was fired. If he was, they'd likely wait until the tour was over with (I still can't believe they let him go mid-tour in any case). They probably reached some kind of agreement, like a contractual buyout or something. There had to be some kind of tension between him and the label for them to be ok with letting him go that easy, though. Wouldn't be surprised if the bad press had something to do with it.

My interest in them is gone. Time to follow Zayn's solo career I guess.

I'm still all in for 1D. Looking forward to Seattle in July. It hurts now but it will all be ok in the end for all involved.

I still love Four. What a great name for the album now LOL. With Zayn gone, they can focus on making Liam the true star of the group. I will say that Zayn's vocals were pretty decent in No Control.

I feel bad for the other 4... Why? They're still getting paid. And more now without a 5th member to split the money. Don't cry argentina for these boys. They're already set for life.

Because they were counting on Zayn to fulfill his end of the contract. Imagine how difficult it's going to be for them to do any kind of promo now. If they want to release anything else from FOUR they basically need to rerecord the single with just 4 of them. Plus the whole touring dynamic is gonna be thrown off for them as well. Not to mention they are now getting a ton of negative publicity and guess who is gonna have to deal with that in interviews, etc. Hint: not Zayn.
And if you strictly speak from a financial standpoint maybe all of them should just leave now. Like was mentioned they are already set for life so there's obviously no point in them doing anything anymore. Their fans are already upset/pissed off so may as well just add more fuel to the fire.

I doubt they're going to release another single from this album. It's probably why they haven't done so already.

Because they were counting on Zayn to fulfill his end of the contract. If their friendship with Zayn is genuine then they're likely happy for him since the stress of their schedule was beginning to take a physical toll on him. If their friendship with Zayn (and each other) is all an act, then they're probably saying good riddance. Destiny's Child reached #1 with "Say My Name" weeks after LeToya and Letavia were fired. Michelle and Farrah even lipped to their vocals in the video. It's really NOT a big deal. No more so than your co-worker in the next cubicle quitting to take a new offer. The tour will go on. No publicity is bad publicity. Plus, it seems the media is being particularly harsh to Zayn more than the others. I really think you're taking the "glass half empty" approach. #TwoDirections is nbd for any of the involved entities.

Lol yeah sorry. I can't find any sympathy in me for these boys. Awkward interviews? Boo hoo. Tour dynamic thrown off? None of them do s**t on stage. They'll continue on and rank in millions from the rest of the tour and next. They'll probably disband after the next album and live happy, care free lives as young attractive millionaires. I won't shed a tear.

Sad to hear this, but I wish the best to all of them.
I honestly wouldn't have been too shocked to see him leave say...after the tour or next year if they did another album (and not tour again, just record), but that it's happening in the middle of the tour is the big surprise. There must have been something very substantive to make the label ok with him ultimately leaving in the middle of a booked stadium tour, especially considering that they'd know how bad it would look in the eyes of the tour promoters.

Yes a move like this in the middle of a major stadium tour and album cycle is unprecedented. I'm sure more will come out in time what actually happened. I am not going to sweat it. I think the others will be just fine and the music will be just as good. I did see on Twitter that Zayn paid 16 Million to get out of this contract. Not sure if it's true or not, but, wow. Zayn isn't Harry Styles. If Harry had left, I think it would have broke up the group. He is the most popular of all of them. If there is a "Timberlake" of 1D, it's Harry. Zayn was more of the "J.C."

I doubt he left to pursue a solo career, at least in music. He always seemed like he didn't give a fuck about music (despite being the most talented in the group) and was only in for the $$$$$. I hope this is not the end of his pretty face being shed down our throats cause he's one of the hottest celebs right now.

How many more releases to they have under their contract? I keep forgetting. Is it just one more? Or is there two (new studio album + potential GH)? I'd assume if it's in the vicinity of around $16 million, a decent chunk of that would go to the promoters. It'll be interesting how things develop now. Harry was definitely the most popular I think, but not by a tremendous amount. I think one of the reasons they lasted as long as they did is because there was no clear-cut lead singer or breakout star a la Beyonce or Cheryl Cole. Generally, I can see pretty much any of them being able to position themselves as successful solo act over the others and surprising people, except Louis. When Take That split everyone thought Gary Barlow would be the breakout and it turned out to be a Robbie Williams.

Read my post in the Zayn thread. He was fired. There was no 16 Million. That was a rumor. Someone from Modest Management told what happened on Twitter and then quit the company. Ha, my first instinct was correct. At least Directioners can breathe easy in knowing that there was no fallout between Zayn and the other four. Seems they were all on the same page and fighting the good fight together, but Zayn was the only one serious enough to say "f**k this s**t." It's a shame he was fired but Simon, Columbia, & other powers probably saw this as an opportunity to A ) make an example out of him to the others ["we made you and we can break you, do your job and quit bitching"] and B ) capitalize on some guaranteed publicity as the media hoopla around the group is starting to slow down. I hope Zayn is free to record as he pleases in the future. That's my concern now.

Honestly, their material was gradually getting worse imo and I'd rather just have Zayn starting a solo career. This is very much like Geri's departure from the Spice Girls back in the day.

Some people are saying that Andrew Louer is real and some say not. I don't know what to believe. I guess we won't ever know or it'll be a long time til we do. I'm going through his old tweets. They're pretty much ALL about Zayn. He's either really close to the eye of the storm or someone bored and delusional sitting in a cabin at the end of a dirt road in Oklabama.
