I can't really grade their previous album. I just couldn't stand anything I heard off of it. I know that's abnormal since most people say it's superior to their latest release.
As for their newest album's singles, which I'm currently spinning occasionally: Coming of Age: A Best Friend: B Are You What You Want To Be: B-

To be honest:
"Pumped Up Kicks": B+. Good as an alt hit, just got SUPER tired of it once it became a multiformant smash. Everywhere I turned, it followed. It's also so dark, yet so catchy. :)
"Helena Beat": A+++++. I still consider this to be their best single. Ever. It's so funky, and I was socked that this didn't get any other success outside of Alt. It's one of their most radio-friendly songs IMO.
Call It What You Want: B. Kinda boring compared to the other singles, but I feel like this inspired Olly Murs for some reason, and it sounds pretty cool, I guess?
Don't Stop (Color on The Walls): B+. Good on its own, I only got into it for a while before I ended up forgetting it.
Houdini: B+. Pretty decent for their last single of that era. It was catchy, yet it can only go so far. Has a high burn rate.
Coming Of Age: B+. Like "Houdini", decent but with a high burn rate, and I think it was because it seemed waaaaaay too mellow and seemed to have copied the formula that made "Pumped Up Kicks" a smash.
Best Friend: A. The best single of the era so far, and my second fave by them after "Helena Beat". True, it became pretty forgettable for me, but that was only because I had heard so many great songs during that time frame.
Are You What You Want To Be: B. I dunno, I kinda like it, but it seems forgettable. I almost LOL'ed when I heard the beginning and almost sang to "Last Friday Night".

^Never hit Top 50 Alt, don't see it ever hitting Top 50 Alt. They'll have to wait until next album, and if the lead single isn't wildly successful I think they're probably done with future major Alt success.

I'm quite surprised that it never reached the Top 50. "Coming of Age" hit #4 and "Best Friend" hit #15, so you would assume that this would at least hit say the Top 25. I'd be shocked if the debut single from their next album didn't do well considering both of theirs in the past hit the Top 4 ("Pumped Up Kicks" peaked at #1). If it doesn't, what does that say for the future of indie on the Alternative chart as Foster The People seems to me as one of the biggest in that category for the last 4-5 years.

I get the sense that the label stopped caring after "Best Friend" was kind of a mini-flop though. As for the future of indie-pop on the radio and whatnot, who knows really? I think this year we've seem more of a move to garage stuff and indie-folk/acoustic stuff. I think we're starting to see heavier alt and indie gain steam (finally) and a bit more of a return to a few of the more alt-leaning veterans (who were neglected in 2013 for the most part) in Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Rise Against, Fall Out Boy, and Weezer (all 5 mustered up top 10s) to name a few. I must stress though that when I say 'heavier', I'm referring to alternative stuff, and I'm definitely not suggesting alternative will return to having a 25-30 song (out of the top 50) overlap with active.

But Alternative never had a 25-30 overlap with Active. At the most it was like 18 in 2008.

I decided to go back and get an example to show that I'm definitely not exaggerating by the former # of overlapping songs, because I'm not looking to provoke the active fans or anything. I'm dead serious. popradiotop20.com/AR/2005/2005-03-11.htmThat's just the top 20. I know that AT LEAST 16 of those were also in the alternative top 50 at the same time, 17 IF the Exies were that week too. So yeah, I don't have my BB account anymore, but 25+ top 50 overlapping songs definitely used to be a thing. But that's all petty and besides the point, really. I'm just saying that I can't see alternative going back to this.

Yeah, but do you do count songs like BOBD that really aren't crossovers? but 25+ top 50 OVERLAPPING songs Well then, that's unfair. Active stole from Alt as well too, and there are songs that can fit into both.

Well then, that's unfair. Active stole from Alt as well too, and there are songs that can fit into both. What's unfair??? No one said anything about one format stealing from the other or what not. Go back and ready from my original post...in fact I'm starting to actually question if you actually READ people's posts. You're constant arguing for the sake of arguing has far surpassed the ridiculous stage. I feel like I have to play this whenever I read anything you post anything in this forum lately

Anyways, before you started acting like my dad and goin all berserk and shit, my point is Alt stole song from Active, the Breaking abenjamins, Mudvaynes, Shinedowns, etc. active stole songs from Alt as well, like the crossovers of Queens of the Stone Age, APC, the like, as well as multimeominating bands like Greem Day

I don't think I've ever had to listen to Yakety Sax 3 times in a row before now.

Really is a shame this couldn't even crack the Top 50. I always felt the 3rd single should have been "Ask Yourself".

Attachment DeletedNot only did it not crack top 50, hardly anyone even played it at all. These are the top 10 all time airplays..and only 21 Alt stations played this even 1 time. Could it be a situation where the label just didn't go out of it's way to promote the album and just expected stations to play it because it's Foster the People?
