along with some music critic called Ann Powers (maybe some LA paper) :( Ann Powers writes for NPR, and I don't think they'd write about him (they also don't write about music they don't like, as far as I know). I like her! More on-topic, the snippet of the title track sounded great when I heard it last night. Looking forward to a hopeful stream on Friday.

I don't follow her per-se but I've read some stuff from her over the years. And yes, I don't think she likes (the music) of MB20 and Rob. But hey, I won't swear to it. No biggie! She was the only music critic's name I could come with. :)

Here's a screenshot. I'm too lazy to do the math, anyone want to add up the times?

You know if I were to have one complaint about Rob's songs is that I think many of them are way too short. I can see why we got a 13th song this time because the album would have been really, really short without it. I just think some songs *might* be better with an added versus. I thought that about the acoustic version of The Great Unknown so I'm sure I would like another versus on the album version. :)

Rumors - I think you mean "add another verse".
I'm hoping that the song times being on iTunes means we will get that stream tomorrow!

I think I was still half asleep when I posted that this morning. Still anxiously waiting to hear more than 30 seconds of the song, The Great Unknown. Soon....

Rob announced at his show tonight that "Hold On Forever" is the next single... That's interesting, I was hoping it to be ITWFGT.
Unfortuently we aren't getting a stream from iTunes, turns out FirstPlay is still a thing and this week is Disturbed's new album. :/
To be honest, I'm surprised the album hasn't leaked yet. Hopefully some website streams it early.

He said awhile back that they would go 3-4 singles deep so there's definitely still hope that "ITWFGT" will get released at some point. Frankly I think the label is nuts if they don't release it at some point. As far as the stream, now that I have my hands on the title track, it's not a big deal to me that I have to wait another week to hear the full album. If we get an early stream, great, it will be a nice surprise.

I'm disappointed in that announcement as a single, too. I'm sure the feeling is they went with the "current" sounding song for the first single and that didn't work out so they'll go with the safe (more what women HotAC listeners expect from Rob) single next. It's a catchy tune but it will probably do about the same as Overjoyed did which wasn't much. I hope I'm wrong. As for Rob saying there would be 3-4 singles I think that was before the album was up for pre-order. We are now just a week away from release and the album still isn't in the top 100 on amazon or iTunes so I think my prediction of 20k-30k albums sold in the first week may be about right. I think his streaming is probably very small as well so with the new Billboard that will hurt even more. He did give a free album away on each ticket purchased, however, I don't know how that will affect sales. When do they count those sales? Is the album counted as a sale in the week someone contacts Ticketmaster to get the album? Curious about how that works. Obviously, there's something there to help boost sales numbers or Atlantic wouldn't have done it.
Speaking of album sales, I think Disturbed may see some very nice sales in their first week. Their album is high at amazon and iTunes even with multiple versions. I think they will fight it out with Kip Moore to be the top debut the week Rob's album comes out. Dr. Dre and Luke Bryan will probably still be 1-2 and then maybe a debut or two, Taylor Swift, etc, etc.

I'll have to disagree with some of you here on the choice of the next single. ITWFGT is a really strong song but hold on forever has the most sing along ability I've heard from Rob in a while. That's a friendly sing a long anthem that could catch fire and tear up radio charts. Is it a shot in the dark? Of course it is. Rob is over 40 and top 40 radio is some of the most biased BS on planet earth and is likely trying to fade out older artists but, this song reminds me of that irresistible melody quality similar to Jason mrazs I'm yours.

In regards to album sales, they steadily decline every year.
Back in 2009, cradlesong sold 122,000 copies in its first week and in 2012, north sold around 100,000.
Both of those albums were supported by pretty successful first singles and this one isn't but I still think this album will hit around 50k in its first week. Rob has a loyal fan base.

Maybe we are getting a stream, here's one from the German Warner Borther's website. www.chfi.com/2015/08/14/audio-stream-rob-thomas-the-great-unknown/It's blocked in the US, so maybe if you use a VPN it will work. Edit: Wind It Up is a banger. Edit 2: So far so good, Paper Dolls has a female vocalist for a verse? No idea who. This album is definitely very poppy. Things You Said gave me a Maroon 5 vibe(not a bad thing). This is the song with Laurence Fishburne has his sample on. "If you wanna be loved by someone, then love someone" Edit 3: I was right, Heaven Help Me sounds a lot different than what I expected it be. Still sounds great though. So far I haven't really not enjoyed a song. Edit 4: I really like Lie to Me. Rob's vocals on this record have sounded great. Final Edit: Pieces is fantastic. I don't have time to type out a full analysis of the album, but I honestly think this was one of my favorite records Rob has put out

Pieces is the best ballad I've heard from him since ever the same. Completely agree, what are overall thoughts of the album? Rolling Stone gave the album a pretty positive review, 3/5 stars. I need a few more listens and I need to let it soak in a bit. Having said that, I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far. Definitely a bit different from cradlesong but I like how it's a bit similar to his first record. Alt pop, and there's even some jazz thrown in and several songs have a really good groove to them. One things for certain, his albums always have top notch production. In the end I'm gonna be pleased with this album because it's provided 3 amazing Rob songs that I'll always listen to. (Hold on forever, the great unknown, pieces) Favorite tracks so far: ITWFGT (great opener and strong melody. Rob's vocals are really good on this one) Hold on forever (smooth acoustic love song. A melody with so much sing a long ability, it'll be in your head for days and you can't help but smile when you listen to it.) Wind it up (pack a little more of a punch than thought and brings back that carefree attitude of Rob) The great unknown (similar to the surprise matchbox gave us with parade, this song shows you a side you didn't know Rob had and it encapsulates you with a great atmosphere and lyric.) Absence of affection (very synthy 80's vibe and a big chorus.) Heaven help me (very unexpected 70's groove thrown into the studio version of this song and I love it.) Pieces (beautiful ballad and lyric. Not only the best ballad I've heard from Rob since ever the same but, this is a top 5 vocal performance from him IMO.)

Oh, you guys are just being mean now. ;) I'm not a computer geek and I don't know how to listen to the album (of course I'm going to cave in like I always do plus I'm out of town next weekend and listening to it with peace and quite in the house will be hard then).
Anyway, I was going to ask if one song in particular stood out. I've seen three people now say Pieces. Obviously, that's the song Rob added at that last minute and I'm going to guess is the one closest to what a lot of people like from him. I heard someone say they miss the angst in his voice. Hello - that's been gone since the first album. It just amazes me what some fans expect from Rob. I heard the word jazz in there somewhere. See - he has a real good buddy friend who does jazz/pop so I can really see Rob making that kind of album one day (after his Ryan Adams album LOL!)
EXCITING!

And I'll take that review from RS. I think that's as good as it will ever get from them. I hope the review actually shows up in the magazine (which I no longer subscribe to) and not just be on-line.

Rumors I'll let you know if there is a easier way to listen to the album. What I've done is installed this Google Chrome extension called Hola Unblocker which allows you to make your internet connection appear as if it was coming from another region. Once it's installed, click this link and up on the top right of your tool bar you should see a little fire. Click the fire and change your region to Canada, and it should refresh the page. If it takes you to the homepage of that website, then just come back to the post and click this link again. You should be able to see the stream then :)

Seems pretty silly to have this up for stream outside of America and not in America. I'll see if I can get through it before I leave work.

Kyle - Thanks for all that information but it's a bit more than what I want to get into even for Rob. :| Maybe if somehow I could hear one more new song to tie me over until next Friday. I probably should go download The Great Unknown from amazon. I was just *hoping* that a longer stream would show up on iTunes. I've already bought that plus I want to get the Target edition so I was just holding out but the reviews above have me excited to hear more. :)

Yeah I'm not going to screw around with a VPN. I'll just wait until it's released. But very excited by these reviews! I'm looking forward to Pieces.

If you have an iPhone, download the app hotspot vpn. They pretty much walk you through. Just skip the subscription process and change the connection tab from disconnected to connected and then select the German flag. Reload the website and you'll be able to listen to the album.

I have grown to love "Hold On Forever" but really wasn't hoping for it to be a single. I think "I Think We'd Feel Good Together," "Absence of Affection," and "Nlytm" are better songs and would be better choices for a single than HOF.
I also don't wanna mess with the region codes and stuff, so I'll wait until it is released in the US, or at least until it's available to be streamed here. I think I've liked everything I have heard so far besides "One Shot"

I think "Heaven Help Me" could honestly make a great single. Gives me a really nice vibe when I listen to it.
