Despite releasing music both solo and with the Kingston Trio for about 20 years at the time, John Stewart had his commercial breakthrough in 1979 with help from Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac (still riding high on the success of Rumours). They contributed to multiple tracks on his Bombs Away Dream Babies, but it was "Gold" that took him to #5 on the Hot 100 and #1 CHR/Pop in the summer of 1979. The follow-up single, "Midnight Wind," also featured Stevie but stalled at #28 on the Hot 100 and completely missed the CHR/Pop chart, leaving the #1 peaking "Gold" John Stewart's sole entry at the format.
This song is basically Fleetwood Mac with a different lead singer. Stevie and Lindsey are excellent on this.

I once told a friend that this song hit #1 in R&R and he told me it must've been payola.
But I like it.
