Am I high... or did this just randomly throw in an "Aint No Mountain High Enough" moment or no reason whatsoever?

are those vocals atrocious because she can't sing anymore and the producers have to work really hard to fix them, or because they messed up in some way in the studio? Because they sound terrible, the autotuning is really obvious.

Y'all forget that Hateretha is a former chainsmoker. That f*cked her voice up pretty bad back then.

Yep, exactly what I expected. God-awful, screechy, wheezy vocals. Her voice is SHOT and she needs to sing material that's more in her current range.
Rolling In the Wheeze...

lmaooo what a fucking mess. The singing, the song choice, the campaign, and that hand-drawn album cover. Dead at her random growls--no sense of lyrical interpretation.

A crock, no doubt.
I hate when people change the phraseology of classic songs. Even small changes, can completely change the flow of a line. I don't know what the motivation is behind doing it, but I hear it happen from time to time and it gets my goat.
The line is "The scars of your love remind me of us. They keep me thinking that we almost had it all". Aretha sings the line: "The scars of our love, they leave me breathless, they keep me thinking *pause* we almost had it all". Leaving that 'that' out makes the phrase so much more inelegant and really interrupts the poetry of it. I find it so arrogant that people will clearly try and prostitute someone else's song for profit, but not remain faithful at least to the lyrical composition.

As much as I love me some Aretha, I agree that this is just horrible. There were a few nice moments, but it's just a mess. I know Aretha's voice has changed over the years, but she sounds autotuned to hell and back in some places. It just doesn't sound natural. I shudder at the thought of her covering all those other classics. Am I high... or did this just randomly throw in an "Aint No Mountain High Enough" moment or no reason whatsoever? She interpolated it.

First...this album cover. I am cracking up at the horrible Photoshop job! That make up look like it was colored on with Microsoft Paint.
She sounds a fucking mess. Really bad.
If she were in her prime, I can hear her slaying this though. She had a couple of cute moments with what she was attempting to do. But overall, she sounds like complete SHIT. It's like she forgot to completely swallow the sandwich lodged in her throat.
I actually really like the interpolation of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." It makes me wanna hear a mash-up of it with Adele's original version.

I don't even think it's that bad? Especially for her being so old and her voice being shredded. I mean obviously it's unnecessary but I think if this wasn't a cover of the most beloved vocalist in the industry right now then she wouldn't be getting torn apart like this. The worst part is the super cheap sounding autotune, if that was done properly, I think it would be a lot better.

Oh my GOD! I heard it with promise and the first minute was acceptable. Then the already mentioned "deep" came and I was like wtf happened? Then the whole melisma started to invade. And then it was like the madhouse had a party and all crazy inmates tried to protest. Mess!!! The production sounded almost like the karaoke version of the song. And then all of a sudden came Ain't no mountain high enough. It 'sounds' good but the lyrics are sort of the opposite of RITD so I got confused! WRONG decision. I'm all for some good Aretha music. For real. I even think she could pull off some good covers but they have to fit her voice, she needs to control the crazy lady screams and the song better be reinterpreted in terms of production. The original is too good and too recent for this to happen at all. I'm looking forward to a live performance tho. It may be great for comedy value

Give us a positive for the song because everything you just stated adds more weight to it being sh!t, which it unfortunately is.

I am DYING at this cover and this thread. The random screeching. Unless this is her attempt at comedy, Aretha needs to give it up. I kind of liked the Ain't No Mountain High Enough interpolation, the only part Aretha didn't sing. Oh, and learn the damn lyrics, Aretha.

Now you know this don't make no damn sense. I tried to have a little faith during the first verse, but that quickly diminished by the chorus. Someone should've stopped her.

Not to mention Rolling In The Deep and Ain't No Mountain are just so far lyrically from one another it's untrue. Mixing them up for no apparent reason takes the hundred worst things about this to a hundred and one.

Mixing them up for no apparent reason takes the hundred worst things about this to a hundred and one. Maybe it was her mantra to get through this song and she just got confused and by the end of her winded session she started singing it? Could be worse--she could have been huffing "I think I can I think I can..." over the last chorus.
