I think I like this traditional country sound on her more. I'm gonna listen again before I single out favorites.

So glad "Dime Store Cowgirl" is the new single. That would have been my pick for sure. I'm not sure I can see radio turning it into a hit, but it's one of the few songs on the record that I think has a chance of making a dent on the charts.

1) This is a really, really good album.
2) Country Radio is going to avoid every single like the plague. Which is a shame, because there was a time where Country was a genre full of rebels.

Does Musgraves have some beef with the Big Machine label? I can't help but wonder if that the reference to the "big machine" in Good Ol' Boys Club is her way of calling out that label.

I don't think she has beef with the label directly, but just the fact that its artists are releasing material thats so overproduced and manufactured is maybe something she's against. Also the fact that radio literally plays anything Big Machine artist's release makes it difficult for other artists to get airplay.

She basically confirmed that was the reference, yes. I'll link to my Genius annotation for time's sake rather than typing it all out again: genius.com/6900608

I missed it somehow on a first listen but Dime Store Cowgirl is really good. The best choice for a next single for sure.

Just got my copy in the mail today! Such a fantastic album! Not radio-friendly at all (other than the 2 singles), but fantastic nonetheless!

The album has grown on me since hearing it Sunday, but there are still a handful of songs I really don't care for (at least not yet). Those are "Miserable", "Die Fun", and "Cup Of Tea". I also don't get the love for "Somebody To Love" (pun somewhat intended). The title track and "Fine" are meh. I do sort of enjoy the hidden track with Willie Nelson though.

Die Fun, though...
This album is everything good about country music. It's so traditional in its sound, but so modern in its lyrics. Honestly, this album might just be a masterpiece in modern country. Every track is absolutely incredible. This girl needs to blow up now. The country music industry simply cannot continue to exist how it is without Kacey Musgraves and others like her (which at the moment there really isn't anyone doing country music as well as Kacey). I know that there just isn't going to be hope for her from this album with everything too traditional to fit in to the shitty playlists of Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean and their 483735593849488 copycats that country radio currently orgasms over, and that's a shame, but this album will be taking awards and critic raving, and that will be the true win. Success without success. A number one album without a hit single! Her last album won awards left and right with just one barely top ten hit and two flops. Yet, her last album sold more than most country albums with multiple hits, and "Follow Your Arrow" sold more than some country number ones! It's absolutely devastating that radio ignores and will continue to ignore the best thing to happen to country music in decades, but it's a nice victory to see her do well without their support.
I simply cannot rave about this album enough. It's literally the 21 of the country world in terms of quality. I will be sharing this album with everyone who even remotely likes country music, because this album must be shared. Absolutely incredible album!

Au$tin, you summed up how I feel pretty perfectly, especially your description about its traditional sound with modern lyrics. This album might not have produced a hit (yet), but the critics are going to praise this like no other, and it should pick up a lot of awards too. It's an easy A+ from me, 5 stars, 10/10. I liked Same Trailer, Different Park a lot, but this one goes above and beyond that one for me. In fact, I'm quite surprised at just how much more I enjoy this album as compared to her debut, because again, I really liked her debut. My favorite tracks are definitely "Dime Store Cowgirl" and "Late To The Party", but I really like "Somebody To Love", "Cup of Tea", and "Fine" a lot as well. "Good Ol' Boys Club" is another excellent track -- I feel like that one does a great job at subtly calling out the country radio industry and how it's no longer about how good you are (and how good your music is), but it's more of a "who do you know/what have you done for me lately" type of thing. I've really felt that way about the country radio industry for quite some time now, especially after following the charts for a few years and reading different articles about how songs get 'promoted' to radio. I'll say it now: I don't like the system, at all. There's always talk about "relationships" and "thanks to my friends in radio!!"...but I think that's a load of crap. Obviously artists are appreciative when radio plays their songs, but I don't for a minute believe that artists are or will be out there hanging out or golfing with radio station employees years after the artist is no longer relevant at radio. They hang out with and "be friends with" the radio people for one purpose -- they want the radio people to like them, and to play their music. In short, I think Kacey tackled the message in "Good Ol' Boys Club" brilliantly. It doesn't come across as antagonistic or anything like that...it's Kacey saying "that sounds great and all, but I'd rather do things my way and not have to play by those rules". And thank God, because if she did play by radio's 'rules', they'd suffocate her creative talent. I don't know if Kacey will ever be a mainstay in the top 20 or top 30 of the airplay charts, but I actually think she has a chance to score a couple of hits from this album (and from future albums too). And the reason I feel that way is because she's already become a household name despite only limited exposure from radio. This album is already projecting to finish at #1 on the Billboard 200; I can't wait to see how it sells. I really think it could surprise a lot of people, even me. And then with the critical acclaim this one is likely to get... This album is old school country; in my opinion it sounds even more old school than her debut album did. With that said, again, I do think there's a small handful of tracks that could work on radio. I'm more optimistic about "Dime Store Cowgirl" than I was about "Biscuits", and I think "Late To The Party" has potential as well. After one listen I'm just so...enamored with each and every song here. The lyrics, her vocals, the production...this album is art as much as it is music. And that's what so many of today's country music artists have forgotten...they care only about being singers, not artists, and as a result we get way too much radio fluff and not nearly enough substance. Pageant Material is a true gem of an album, and it only further proves that Kacey is one of those rare talents that doesn't come along very often. Truly gorgeous arrangements with intelligent adult lyrics...this one's gonna be on repeat for a long time to come.

I really hope this wins Album of the Year at the CMAs and ACMs because she really deserves it. Best Country Album at the Grammys would also be nice, but an Album of the Year nomination at the Grammys (in all genres) would be amazing for her.

The 21 reference is the most bullseye thing in the world. I'm getting the exact same feeling with this album. Sure, it's less bombastic than 21, but every song hits its mark and with confidence. She doesn't miss a beat and is flawless on this, and it's only her sophomore album.

Very solid followup from her. I think the debut is bit better overall, though.

Just curious, does she have any explicit language on this? I like when she gets a bit sassy lol

Great album; certainly no sophomore slump. Not going to hold out much hope for radio, but I hope press and sales support continues. Just curious, does she have any explicit language on this? I like when she gets a bit sassy lol No - just "damn" and "pissing" in "Biscuits."

You guys, I'm dying over here. My Vinyl copy doesn't get here until 7/10 when it is released on record. I'm not previewing any of the songs other than Biscuits (which I bought) and the previous iTunes pre-order songs.

Not sure where this article's author got his calculations from, but he was way off. Pageant Material is now projected to debut at #3 on the all-genre chart and #1 on the country chart, after first day sales: hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=296561I had thought there might be a possibility of Kacey passing Tori Kelly to debut at #2 instead (matching Same Trailer Different Park's BB200 chart debut), but it was pointed out to me that the BB200 chart now includes single sales and streams in addition to album sales, so that's highly unlikely.

Yeah I was gonna say earlier, Kacey is at #3 on the iTunes all-genre chart right now. Tori Kelly is at #2 and her album came out on the same day. I know there are other factors that affect chart position/debut, but I can't imagine that will put Kacey ahead.

Projected to debut next week with 50-55k (55-60k SPS).
Same Trailer, Different Park debuted at #2 with 44k (503k sold to date).

This album is pure genius. I'm in full agreement on the 21 reference. The lyrics on this record are so confident and quick. Masterpiece.
