Usually the songs that hit it big in America make its way to Europe and become popular, or vice versa. However some songs that made a splash in America failed to impress in Europe
Fancy- Iggy Azalea: #1 in the US but only cracked the top 10 in a few European countries. Only hit #5 in UK despite appearance by British artist Charli XCX
Not a Bad Thing- Justin Timberlake: #8 in the US, big flop in Europe. Cracked the top 40 in only a few countries
Black Widow- Iggy Azalea ft. Rita Ora: #4 in the US, hit #4 in the UK but so far a moderate top 40 hit in the rest of Europe
Anaconda- Nicki Minaj: #2 in the US, (#3 in India?) but so far not making an impact in Europe. Give the song a few more weeks to see how it does over there. Interestingly, Sir Mix A Lot's "Baby got Back" was the 2nd best selling single of the year in America in 1992 but only reached #56 in the UK and didn't fare much better in other European countries.
Latch- Disclosure ft. Sam Smith: #7 in the US, #11 in the UK, flop in the rest of Europe. What gives? This is a great song- it has hints of the EDM sound that Europe likes...
What do you guys think makes a song popular in America and not Europe, or vice versa? Is it the artist or the sound? I always think about the Madonna song "Take a Bow" from 1995. Madonna took on an R&B sound thanks to Babyface in the single, and it was one of her biggest hits in the US but it flopped in most of Europe, even after she was an established presence there. Was it just the sound that Europe didn't like? Meanwhile, Erotica was a much bigger hit in Europe than it was in America.

True, but their other song "You & Me" featuring Eliza Doolittle is one of the biggest hits of the year in France (mostly thanks to the Flume remix).

Latch is more of a word-of-mouth hit, I think it's very popular actually, just not on singles charts.
Fancy is one of the biggest songs all over the world.. Europe hasn't ignored it by any means.

I live in Europe and Fancy is one of the most popular songs here.
The UK charts don't really reflect popularity that well. It's mainly adult contemporary and dance songs which sell the most, since the average age of iTunes users in the UK is 30-something (most younger people illegally download I guess) probably the same in other European countries.

Fancy: true. In my country (Netherlands), it peaked at #20-something. Black Widow is likely to smash higher, though. Not A Bad Thing: peaked at #30-something. Anaconda: didn't chart (yet) in the official top 40 of my country. Latch: neither this charted.
