This has to be one of theost baffling things ever for me. I know its been 20 years but you have artists like Celine and even Patti who still sound amazing live. I know Mariah is known to have vocal nodules, wineaholic, etc but the evolution of her voice has to be one of theost intriguing questions within mainstream music.
Thoughts?

Mariah recorded albums and performed live for 10 years straight in her prime without ever pausing and she's had nodules ever since she was a teenager. Excessive strain and, yes, alcohol (because we all know she loves a splash) lead to problems.
There was a noticeable change in her voice after 1992 and while she was still a hell of a vocalist, it was clear that she was already going through a process of transformation. She probably took better care of her voice then, but I think it was almost inevitable. Had she continued to follow a strict regimen, the change would have been more gradual probably.
Her voice today has become unpredictable. She'll have periods when she can sing with little effort and other times when she struggles more. There are various other factors that contribute to her vocal state as well (rest, physical conditions, nervousness, etc.)

It's been fairly unreliable since the late 90s, but it hasn't gotten progressively worse. She has periods where she sounds bad followed by periods where she sounds fantastic. I think it just comes down to personal decisions that affect her voice (rest, use, alcohol, etc.)

I don't think "evolution" is the right word for it.

I don't think "evolution" is the right word for it. What is your suggestion then? since you asked The deterioration of Mariah Carey's voice.. The decline of Mariah Carey's voice.. The downward spiral of Mariah Carey's voice.. The disappearance of Mariah Carey's voice.. The loss of Mariah Carey's voice..

Well the first three are acceptable. The latter two are exagerated.

performed live for 10 years straight in her prime False. The Music Box tour had 6 dates, Daydream 7, Butterfly 12, and Rainbow 19. Compared to Whitney and Celine's touring record during the first 10 years when they hit it big, Mariah is hilariously behind. And for promotional purposes, the amount of promo performances she did on shows went down after 1994. I do agree that her voice started to change a bit starting around 1993, but a lot of it seemed to be stylistic. At the very least, the change didn't really suggest that it was weaker. Imo, what really f**ked her over in the late 90s was all the times she spent in nightclubs inhaling secondhand smoke. That probably did more damage than anything else. You can tell by Butterfly that her voice wasn't quite as strong as before, but after that it nosedived somewhat. By the time you got to Charmbracelet, it was in tatters. She probably started to take care of it more seriously when she was about to go on tour in 2003 and kept it up after. Evolution isn't the right word here, it's a logical deterioration from what her body took in and lack of proper upkeep for years. Whitney's voice started to falter after as well The Bodyguard, which is when her drug use increased I believe. Smoking definitely damaged it too. She did cocaine in the 80s as well I think, but I'm not sure how that would affect ones voice. Celine has stated many times that she doesn't go to parties that much, and she's usually very strict on maintaining her voice (aside from her break during 2000-2002), which is why it held up much better.

She didn't tour as much as Whitney and Céline but she definitely recorded more material than them in the same span of time. I didn't just mention tourinhg in my post. And the number of her promotional performances didn't go down after 1994. That's not true. Cocaine use does damage the breathing system being inhaled through the nose btw.

^^ That is not the exact video I was looking for...there is one where she is singing in the climax of VOL over many different years...

It's a combination of overuse, nodules, expected decline like lots of people and more importantly her life choices ie drinking, being around smoke, lack of taking care of her instrument.
My solution, focus on studio performances and using backing tracks. We all know what her voice is capable of so backing tracks instead of just straight lipping is the way to go.

I had no idea she had nodules. Either way, yes, once a voice has been used for a long time, it does decline. Mariah still performs well given the circumstances.

This is actually the video I was looking for when I posted the other one... www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm0YT_sJ4jwThe main idea of the video is that her voice has been changing over the course of her entire career, and showed a bit of change with each album. She was singing considerably differently by the Daydream era than she was during the debut era and Emotions.

She sounds fine on the most recent couple of dates. Chances are she didn't really rehearse for the first show.

You better believe it girl!!! Slaying IBT over 20 years later. I see some folks came in here looking for a tall glass o' water....take your thirst to the A-J section of the Artist Discussion page. Let's just continue posting videos from The Enunciating Chanteuse tour in here please. -------- My opinion on the state of Mariah's voice is, as many others have said, it has it's off days and it has it's ON days. But this tour has proven that those ON days are still here and plenty are to come. She hasn't sounded this good since the CB tour and in some cases, since the mid 90's! I'm proud of Mariah and it's evident, that still, in her 40's NONE of the current pop girls can come to bat with this Queen. I appreciate her talent because it is truly one of a kind.
