Another report said a female who's been around for decades- I guess Missy has been around multiple decades, but the way it was phrased made it sound like even more of a veteran. Like, Cher, Stevie Nicks/Christine McVie, someone like that. I also heard that she's just going to do No. 1 hits, nothing new. "Roar," "Firework," "Last Friday Night," "Dark Horse" were pretty much givens. Exactly - Missy is not the name I would've thought, but maybe it's payback for the LFN (remix)? No new music is very disappointing. I'm still hoping for a POM Grammy surprise release. I've kind of given up on Taylor showing up for the "Bad Blood (Frenemy Remix)" I doubt Taylor would want to be a guest performer. She's primed to headline the halftime show in one of the coming years.

Also, thank the fucking Lord Blake Shelton isn't singing the NA.

Katy is slaying iTunes right now and the game is hours away still.

It's still fun imagining that cameo because it's relevant and would certainly create a huge social media sensation - it would likely eclipse the game coverage for rest of night and on Monday. (Well not really eclipse it, but certainly get a ton of press.) Katy is slaying iTunes right now and the game is hours away still. She is? I don't see a single KP song in Top 200. Maybe I'm missing something here.

I wish she was debuting a new song tonight. It's unlikely, but it could still happen. And then it is put on iTunes right after the performance ends and she sets a record for most downloads in one day and one week and debuts at number one on the Hot 100.

...Katy Perry is not an album artist, lol. (She does have four singles in the top 200 right now, though - "Roar" at 117, "Dark Horse" at 123, "Firework" at 152, and "This Is How We Do" at 190.) Anyway, she's doing "Roar" and "Birthday" (:S), apparently: Chelsea Press 2 There was at least one Billboard article confirming nothing new is coming tonight.

While I absolutely love Birthday, there is no good reason she should be performing it at the Super Bowl especially with its brother Sugar atop the iTunes charts.

I'm watching this because it's undoubtedly going to be a conversation tomorrow and I'm one of those "need to be in the know" types. Should give me a good laugh too. Check the albums. ;) #albumsartist That's because she discounted it to 6.99.

I'm still just so confused as to why she was picked? did other acts turn this down? the only way this would make sense is if the NFL want there to be less attention on the Halftime show and more focus on the game. She's basically the Celine Dion of the 2000s in the fact that she sells a massive amount of records but no one gives a f*ck. Bruno Mars was at least a fantastic performer and easily one of the few artists who will be remembered out of today's acts, even the Black Eyed Peas seem like a logical choice compared to this. It's not even likely that she'll receive any major criticism, she's been terrible at the majority of the high appearances she's made without receiving backlash so it be random as hell if it started now. Such a nonevent.
At this rate, I'm expecting Jason Derulo to headline before 2020.

It's not an inspired choice. It's not necessarily an artistic choice. But it's certainly not a CONFUSING choice. Katy Perry is about as obvious as it gets when it comes to picking a performer for this type of show.

I think some people are really underestimating just how popular she actually is. And this is coming from someone that's not even a fan of hers.

It's a strange choice to me too. She's insanely popular and people know her songs but I don't think anyone actually *feels* anything about her. She doesn't evoke anything from anyone+, positive or negative. It's like, she'll perform, do her thing, and then if she didn't screw up, nobody will care.
+ anyone in a general sense. I'm aware she has stans and haters.

I wasn't comparing their talent, I was comparing their careers. Celine was thought of as a joke, made generic music that never received an immense amount of acclaim but sold a massive amount of albums. If you replace '"albums" with "singles"the exact same can be said for Katy.

Celine had a number of big hit singles during the 90's though.

I know Celine also has big singles/won grammy's but she never incited a ton of passion ala Britney/Mariah etc. I'm not saying no one likes them, but they aren't the kind of artists who are "shocking" and indite strong reactions from people. Someone like Rihanna/Lady Gaga is a popstar like Katy, but indite stronger reactions from people in terms of love/hate. Anyone would kill to have the success Celine/Katy has had, I'm not dismissing that.

How is she not an albums artist since all 3 of her albums have gone at least platinum with the first one being released in 2008 when albums sales were already on the decline? Sure she could sell a lot more given how she has had multiple monster hits but to say that she doesn't sell albums is a bit over the top especially for a pop artist who needs hits to move copies anyway.
I need a link that works in Europe. Please and thank you!

The majority of Katy's record sales are from her singles, while her albums have performed well, her single sales is what distinguishes her as one of the most successful artists currently. the majority of Celine's record sales come from her albums, she's had singles that perform well but her albums performed much better. that isn't dismissing their other accomplishments but just a fact regarding their success. I know both of their accomplishments, I've repeatedly stated how successful they both are. Their accomplishments reflect the state of the industry while they were active and that's what made me consider them similar.

I would've expected JLO performing at the Super Bowl before Katy Perry.
