Lmao wow; just wow. The increasing trend throughout the week has been so exciting to watch and it's just insane that she may beat Britney's record or, at least, reach the 1.3M threshold! :O

What do people think she would have sold if cd sales were like they were 10-12 years ago? Do most of her fans and the public buy her full cd's or do you think she would sell an additional 500 thousand copies?

She would have honestly been nearing *N'SYNC's record (or eclipsed it), to be honest.

It would be great if Taylor had some coattails and brought some other releases' sales higher this week when they go to target/Walmart/itunes

Tough to answer this question because we don't know whether she would have become a star of the same caliber in a different era.

Go Taylor. Let Taylor break or tie Britney's record. The promotion for this past week for the album has been great. Taylor on both "The View" and "The Talk" in a matter of two days. That is how you reach a audience.Plus you have great fans like me who brought the Itunes and the Standard/Deluxe Physical versions.

Once this week is over, it would be interesting to see just where the surges came from. Did retail sell stronger or did the downloads hang on far better than expected?

Responding to the posts above about what this album would have sold if itwas released 10-12 years ago?
It would be hard to say it would have sold more or less than it is now. In any era, the right album from the right star with the right power will move a million copies in a week, That has been proven over and over again.
If this moves 1.3 million in 2014, that is equivalent to oh say breaking N Sync's record in 2000? Doubtful. Or at the very least, hard to say. Would Taylor Swift had been the same star without itunes and the internet? Would N SYnc had moved more copies then if it were listed on itunes? The two markets are different and not really comparable.
What does seem clear (in my opinion) to me though is, at least with the albums moving 7 digits, there is not a lot of difference between the two eras. It is still a rare event (as it was then) that still ocassioanally happens with the right album.

Or Eminem, or Lil Wayne or a host of others A Taylor Swift release is an "event" to be sure. Her followup to this in a couple years may also break a million. I am just saying, at least at this level, there is no difference between 2014 and 2000. A million takes an "event" type album, and is rare in both eras but still happens given the right album

Uh, anyone using logic and taking note of the nosedive in album sales in the last 14 years would undoubtedly agree there is a BIG difference between a one million week in 2000 and 2014. It might have been an "event" and/or an "uncommon occurrence" in 2000, but the sales climate was still thriving (everything sold higher). Then and now is night and day.

Regardless of whether it breaks any record, 1.2-1.3m in this sales climate probably is definitely more of a feat than back in the early 2000s. I mean, 1m in a week is beyond terrific in any climate, but especially now, with album sales much lower than they were back in the early 2000s.

My comments were related to moving a million in a week, not what happens in week 2 or 3.
A million in a week happens just about once a year, even today. So it is still possible and in my opinion has nothing to do with the sales climate.
It took a high profile star with the right album to move a million in a week in 2000, it still does in 2014, and will again in 2015 and beyond

I agree with all that you said- but, 1m+ in a debut week was more common back then than it is now- in part, because sales were much higher. My story, and I'm sticking to it. :)

I would say sales of 500,000 were more common back then because sales were much higher. But a million was rare, even then. That is my story and I am sticking to that LOL.
When you get to how an album performs over the long term, that is related to the sales climate. When you are talking about out of the gate sales, it is proven time and again, that the right star accompanied with the right marketing will still rack up the sales.
I will go out on a limb and say we will see million plus weeks again in the future, probably as early as next year.

It does *almost* happen once a year. It has happened (including 1989) 4 times in the last 5 years. But 3 of those 4 have been Taylor. Between 1999-2004, we had Backstreet Boys (twice), NSYNC (twice), Eminem (twice), Britney Spears, The Beatles, Limp Bizkit, Norah Jones and Usher do it (am I forgetting any?). I know we can't say ____ in 2014 equals ____ in 2000 but it's tough to say that selling a million in the 2010s isn't more impressive than selling a million in the early 00s.

Yes- the fact that three of the four 1m+ openings in the last five years are Swift albums is telling.

If any album deserves the prestigious title, it's this one. Was she nominated for AOTY at the Grammy's for her past efforts? I know it's over a year away, but I'd hope to see this one win it too. She's turning me into a stan, crazy!

Fearless won Album of the Year in 2010. Red was nominated but lost earlier this year. Taylor Swift and Speak Now were not nominated, although Speak Now was up for Best Country Album.
It's early but it is hard to imagine 1989 not being nominated for Album Of The Year. 1989 vs. 25 will be a very interesting race for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2016.

One thing to consider is albums are also more front loaded today. it is intriguing though how a handful of albums end up so far above the rest lately -- Adele, Frozen, Taylor -- it's so rare for anybody to reach that.
