Artist: Sam Hunt Single: "Take Your Time" Writers: Sam Hunt, Josh Osborne, Shane McAnally Album: MontevalloLabel: MCA Nashville Add Date: November 24th, 2014 SourceListenThis is probably two or three weeks early, but there's been so much talk about "what's the next single", I'd figure to get this up. Sam confirmed in a Billboard interview that "Take Your Time" will be the second single from Montevallo. Not sure if MCA will wait til the new year or give it an add date in November or early December. "Leave The Night One" will be the #1 song this week which means it will be going recurrent around mid November, and that would leave them in what's called "No Man's Land" for when to release the next single with the holidays rapidly approaching. The multiple concerts that claimed Sam stated this would be next were correct. Chart Run: 50* - 46* - 40* - 31* - 27* - 24* - 24* - 22* - 19* - 14* - 14* - 11* - 10* - 9* - 5* - 3* - 2* - 2* - 1 - 5 - 8 (Mediabase)

This is definitely the best choice for Country radio. It's one of the least polarizing songs on the album, and isn't too much of a stretch. I actually kind of like this one, the switch between talking and singing is what makes this one somewhat interesting. I think this will be a good follow up. For the adds date, I say beginning of January. The recurrent play for this one will be so strong, and with the momentum he has right now with radio, I think they'll be ok to wait a few extra weeks to start pushing the next single. Chances are radio will start playing it early anyways.

Great album front to pack. My personal favorite besides Leave The Nite On would have to be Speakers, though.

This chart run should be intriguing. The song is very talky and even though it's pretty fast, it's pretty low key and not upbeat. The chorus is pretty slow as well.
Sam Hunt has a lot of momentum right now and this was the top selling album track at the album's release. This will probably be polarizing, but it will most likely be a big radio hit. I still don't think it should be played on country radio, but that's a discussion for another day.

Listened to this one again to refresh my memory. I really love the chorus (even though it is musically shallow) but this one will be a station-changer just because of the cringe-worthy verses.
I feel like Drake, NSYNC, and Luke Bryan just made a baby.

I listened to this for the first time tonight and am really enjoying it. Overall I will admit to being a fan of Sam and his amazing talents. I do think his music is outside of the country spectrum, but even still I've always respected artists who stay to true to themselves and don't pander. I have to disagree with @nickv1025...Luke Bryan and Sam Hunt do not fall into the same category. They are two very different artists and I personally think Sam's musical talents are miles beyond Luke's. I'll also admit to being a fan of Drake...again I'm very diverse in my taste of music. Anyways back to this song...it's going to be different hearing this kind of song on country radio but I'll take this over "Burnin' It Down," "Lookin' For That Girl," or "Sun Daze."

On first listen I think I like this more than I should. The chorus is solid, and no less country than most of what radio is playing these days. Plus there's no hip hop beat, that gets a big thumbs up in my book. But the verses...what on earth was Sam thinking? That's just a train-wreck - and I usually don't mind spoken word verses. Country radio has never played anything even close that, so for that reason I just don't see this hitting #1. Sam has immense talent, I just hope he makes it big in a different genre.

Decent choice - it's not one of my favourite songs on the album, but it's probably a bit safer choice for country radio than some of the other songs on the album. I would have preferred "Break Up In A Small Town", "Ex To See" or "House Party", though.

I still see "Single For The Summer" being a huge hit but maybe they never release it, give the other options.

It'll be interesting to see what day they end up releasing from this album. Well obviously nothing on the record would get accused of being traditional, they really could push the envelope of what's country alot or just a little, depending on what they decide to release as singles.

I'm surprised to see a couple of you say this is probably the best choice for country radio, even relatively speaking. I think his delivery of the spoken parts makes this one sound even less country than the first single.
Sonically, I like him better than FGL, Aldean, Bryan and such but his music just seems less of a fit for the format to me, particularly a song like this.

This sounds like a smash hit!! It's grown to be one of my favorites now. Sam performed this song at his Grand Ole Opry debut, and he also sang it many times during his radio tour so I assume he got positive feedback from radio PDs. The main concern is really the projected December add date.
I notice Lady Antebellum is already tweeting support for "Take Your Time". Sam is opening for Lady A at Country Jam, so I wonder if UMG should just pair them up for the 747 tour in 2015. The benefits for Sam is obvious, but I think he could also help with ticket sales since he can bring in the male 18-30 demo that normally wouldn't go to a Lady A concert. If UMG goes with it, I hope Sam gets the middle slot. It got beyond ridiculous when FGL had to open for Thompson Square when I went to the Luke Bryan 2013 summer tour.

I think the spoken word parts will help this song to be a hit. All the horny college sluts will eat that up and download the song. Was that really necessary?

Hey Matt/rsmatto, is the bolded part speculation or you got inside info from Sam's management? Please let it be true! roughstock.com/news/2014/11/30763-sam-hunts-lipstick-graffiti-tour-sells-out-in-minutes/"Within minutes, and sometimes seconds in some cases, Sam Hunt’s Lipstick Graffiti Tour sold out in 15 markets on Friday. The first-ever headlining tour for the Platinum-selling singer/songwriter will also feature Michael Ray and Native Run. Due to the massive and overwhelming response, Hunt is exploring larger venues and adding second shows in multiple cities where scheduling permits. " I am beyond pissed that tickets sold out in less than 1 minute!! I logged into Ticketmaster literally within seconds after tickets were released, and it was already sold out. So not fair that long-time fans that knew Sam before he was famous now can't even get tickets. The management totally underestimated his popularity. Why are they booking club venues with only 1000 seats? It's so obvious he say sell out large theatres by now. Fans across the country are so upset all over social media!

With that said this song isn't the worst if I was listening to todays hit radio and not country radio. It just doesn't belong on country radio.

And so another similarity with an aspect of mainstream pop radio that I hate. An artist (a DEBUT artist) has one big hit and suddenly goes on a headlining tour (and the name is so fitting). I know they are small venues and this happens now and then but the amount of exposure this is getting (a write-up on RS, my local radio stations talking about it) is irritating, to say the least.

Well so far radio is showing no hesitance in playing this "polarizing" song. I think Sam could end up being the biggest new artist since Florida Georgia Line. With the strong sales this song is receiving, radio won't have many excuses to NOT play this song.

This is currently at #7 on the iTunes country chart, trailing only Blake's "Lonely Tonight" (#1), Tim's "Shotgun Rider", Carrie's "Something In The Water", FGL's "Sun Daze", RaeLynn's "God Made Girls", and Eric's "Talladega". And this morning Sam was actually at #4--just barely ahead of FGL, Eric, and RaeLynn--so it's logical to assume he's still neck and neck with those ones.
I expect this to be another big hit for Sam. It's a pretty decent song, but again, I don't hear anything country about it. I know a lot of other artists incorporate other genres into their music, but they at least still have country instruments or "country-sounding" voices/phrasing, and I don't hear any of that in the singles from Sam so far. "Leave The Night On" is definitely one of my favorite songs of the year but in my own mind I don't really classify it as a country song.
I'll have to check out his album but I'm really rooting for him to have a lot of cross-over success so that maybe country radio won't really need to play his stuff as much in the future (if at all). I still like hearing Taylor Swift's new music a lot on pop radio but I'm glad that it's not on country radio (for obvious reasons--it's not country--but also because it allows a few other songs to be able to get the airplay that would normally be going to Taylor). If Sam's music continues to remain so far-removed from country, I'd like to see him go the Taylor route.

I agree that this song, along with every other song on Sam's album, is not (in my mind anyway) country. That being said, the chorus of this song I do like and think it isn't too far removed for what country radio will play, but like kw9461 said, I just cannot stand those verses. It really all depends how spoken word parts of songs are handled - I don't mind some of them - but I just feel that they really did not have to be used the way Sam uses them in this song. It seems early on that country radio doesn't mind though (shocker, I know), as "Take Your Time" will jump to #40 this week on MB.

Yeah, I totally agree with the above comments about Sam's countriness (or lack thereof). He is talented for sure, but country he ain't

Not a fan of this guy, but just wanted to say, my radio station is not playing his current single, but House Party. It's for sure not country and has parts in it that sound like Leave the Light On, to me.

This has a great week, up 8 to #32 and gains over 1.5 million AI. The different sound of this doesn't seem to be hurting it at radio, at least not yet anyway.

I think his different sound is why it IS working with radio. He'll be allowed to have his very pop sound but very few, if any others, likely will be able to go that far.

This and Sun Daze are in a heated battle over which one I turn off the fastest when it comes on. It's a tight race. I can't *stand* this song. The chorus might be okay but I wouldn't know because I can't get through the verse to hear it. Stop. Just stop.

This song is very interesting for me. I think it's a great song, it's well produced, and well written. But I don't find it the slightest bit country except for maybe the chorus. While I want the song to do well, I don't want the country format to become 40 of these types of songs. I'm really hoping that this song can cross over to Pop (not sure why it couldn't), Sam can blow up there, and then be on his way. Like others have said, the artist I would most compare him to is Drake, who has absolutely nothing in common with Country music.
