All this talk about George Strait is making me feel warm inside. I really hope "Troubadour" can make it far in the rankdown; I'm almost done with my list, just need to listen to everything again so I can be sure before sending. "I'm almost done, I just need to listen to 100 songs again first..." Well...not everything... *eyeroll* Have to let more songs I'm not that familiar with grow on me (e.g. select songs from the 80s to the mid 90s); I have found some marvelous gems, though.

So I figured I'd go back and listen to the only two 80s-era Strait singles I don't recognize. I can see why even George doesn't like "Down and Out", because it's practically the same damn song as "Unwound". However, I'm baffled as to why "You're Something Special to Me" slipped through the cracks. It has some sonic similarities to his other 80s songs, but I feel that it has a little extra warmth to it that makes it stand out more.
Also, I'm still baffled that I have no recollection of ever hearing "Meanwhile" on the radio at all. That's a REALLY underrated one. I also don't ever remember hearing "I Know She Still Loves Me" (for some reason, the first few weeks of 1996 seem especially foreign to me -- what the heck was "I'll Try" again?), "Lead On", "King of the Mountain", or "The Man in Love with You" when they were singles, but as with all the other ones, I have heard them after the fact.

"Lead On" is an excellent song and one of Strait's most underrated singles IMO. I also feel that way about "So Much Like My Dad", which is all but forgotten these days.

George Strait did not want Down And Out released as his second single. That's why it's not in his box set from 1995.

So Much Like My Dad was George Strait's final single before the Pure Country movie came out. Because of that, interest in the Holding My Own album was obliterated.

Can't say I blame the industry and general public too much for that one. Holding My Own is a great album, but Pure Country is very likely the best album of his career! The switch to Tony Brown as a producer was a perfect move at that time. I feel like George's music from Pure Country onward has aged incredibly well, while the '80s and early '90s albums sound like '80s and early '90s albums. I mean, his Tony Brown music sounds like '90s music too... But if I didn't know George at all, and you made me listen to "I Cross My Heart" and asked me what year it was from, I would probably guess sometime in the late '90s or early 00's, but I would never guess as old as 1992... The Pure Country album was a major step into modernity for George.

Too bad the movie did not do better because it was competing against The Bodyguard.

"Lead On" is an excellent song and one of Strait's most underrated singles IMO. I also feel that way about "So Much Like My Dad", which is all but forgotten these days. Agreed fully on both points. I remember mom buying the Lead On album and putting "Adalida" onto a tape several times over because a friend of hers liked the song, but I don't ever remember listening to the album otherwise. "Lead On" is a good song, though. Holding My Own is one of the few Strait albums I've listened to all the way through because I really think "So Much Like My Dad" is one of his best songs. There isn't a bad song on that album IMO. I've said my piece on "I Cross My Heart" too. To me, it's just insanely boring and unoriginal, and I don't get its appeal. I also think "Heartland" is very poorly produced for its time. That song actually reminds me of Josh Leo's production style in the 90s -- way too many instruments in the song, and the guitars are all high pitched and compressed. It also suffers from uninspired lyrics, and it's always bugged me that it only has one verse. That said, a lot of his Jimmy Bowen era albums have dated production too. Bowen tended to use a lot of reverb, and he tended to create a really weird unnatural fiddle sound.

Agreed. I recommend listening to more of Strait's albums if you can; he is a pretty strong album artist. I'd say many of his greatest songs were never released to radio. I mean, just in recent years he's had great cuts like "Everything I See", "Poison," "A Showman's Life", "When the Credits Roll', "House of Cash", "House With No Doors", etc. that in my view are much more interesting than the listenable but fluffy stuff like "Love's Gonna Make It Alright" and "River of Love."

I LOVE "How Do I Live", "XXX's and OOO's", and "She's In Love With The Boy"...but otherwise I could take or leave the entire rest of Trisha Yearwood's career.

Not even “Walkaway Joe?!” It is a good song, certainly! But there's nothing about it that makes me think I couldn't live without it. Most of her songs are at least good, and "Walkaway Joe" is definitely one of the better ones, but it always feels like there's something missing to me with her music.

There are several songs of hers I cherish, but at the same time a large portion of her catalog is stuff I find pleasant but probably wouldn't go out of my way to listen to.

I've mentioned before my opinion on "How Do I Live", as I find the song so horribly cliche that I don't get how anyone gets anything out of it. Some of her stuff I can see the argument for being generic (such as "XXX's and OOO's"), but most of it doesn't bother me. I actually think she has quite a few absolutely stellar songs: "Georgia Rain", "Walkaway Joe", "The Song Remembers When", "There Goes My Baby", etc.

Trisha Yearwood has an absolutely gorgeous voice that elevates almost everything she does imo. She's someone I've always wanted to get more into, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. "Georgia Rain" though is one of my all-time favorite country music songs by any artist. Everything about it vocally, instrumentally, lyrically, and visually (the music video is A++) is flat-out perfect to me.

I really like "There Goes My Baby" because of the very unusual chord progressions. It uses a lot of III, ii, and iv chords that really make it sonically interesting to me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Trisha Yearwood fan. She's recorded several stellar songs and many solid albums, her voice is one of the best ever, and there's really nothing I dislike. But in sprite of all that, I'm not as passionate about her music as I am of that of, say, Patty Loveless or Pam Tillis, and I can't really explain why.

I LOVE me some Trisha. Granted , I didn’t really appreciate her entire catalog until Georgia Rain came along though. What I appreciate about Trisha is I believe she can belt along with all the big note chicks ( Carrie, Martina , LeAnn) but mostly understands that not all songs require that big note. Sometimes that soft note is more important.

If you don't think Trisha fits "Wrong Side of Memphis", John Berry also cut it. It was on one of the indie albums he did before his breakthrough. I found a magazine article once where Gary Harrison said he didn't like it either, because he felt that it just kind of droned. I honestly like it a lot.
When it comes to underrated Trisha songs, I've already mentioned "There Goes My Baby", but I also think that "Powerful Thing", "You Can Sleep While I Drive", and "That's What I Like About You" (also cut by James House) are underrated.

"You Can Sleep While I Drive" is gorgeous. I get why it wasn't a country radio hit (bc taste, lol), but her version of it is so great.
