No single. No collabos. Seems like he's going the Kanye route and going against the factors that would help him in terms of commercial success. It will be interesting to see if he can pull it off at this stage of his career.

170k without anything to promote seems likely. Could be higher.

I think I'm alone here but Jermaine can kinda work a nerve with me sometimes.
I like him, I like his albums and I like that he's stayed true to himself all these years. But sometimes it feels like he is just a little too eager to be this generation's Nas. It's like he's trying so hard to be chill he accidentally does the most.

I feel like his similarity to Nas is actually that their material and unwillingness to waver commercially has led them to be looked at as less when compared to some of their peers who aren't nearly as lyrically talented but are more commercial.

I am excited to see how this is going to do without any major promotion/singles. It is refreshing to see that he is not so focused on the formulaic way of doing things.

And rap album of the year goes to.....this sounds like his most cohesive body of work ever outside his first mixtape

I bought his last album but outside of She Knows and Power Trip, I can't even remember the other songs. He was OK when I saw him live. I guess I'm just not that into him but maybe that will change with this album.

oop. J. Cole’s album 2014 Forest Hills Drive is not officially out yet, but it’s already sparking controversy. On the leaked track “Fire Squad,” the North Carolina rapper calls out some famous white artists for appropriating black culture. “History repeats itself and that’s just how it goes / Same way that these rappers always bite each other’s flows / Same thing that my ni**a Elvis did with rock ‘n’ roll / Justin Timberlake, Eminem, and then Macklemore,” raps Cole, who appeared on the remix to Timberlake’s “TKO.” He also has some words for Iggy Azalea, who beat Eminem and Drake for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist at this year’s American Music Awards. “While silly ni**as argue over who gon’ snatch the crown / Look around my ni**a, white people have snatched the sound / This year I’ll probably go to the awards dappered down / Watch Iggy win a Grammy as I try to crack a smile.” He’s quick to add, “I’m just playin’, but all good jokes contain true shit / Same rope you climb up on, they’ll hang you with.” Fans took to Twitter to react and debate. Some sided with Cole, while others defended their favorite artist. Damn j cole took a shot at Eminem, he's gonna regret that….lmao — Lawrence (@gravitydefyingd) December 3, 2014 J Cole you right bruh but swinging at Macklemore, Eminem, and Justin Timberlake is a mis-step bro. Definitely was not a smart decision. — UndefeatedChubbyOTC (@djchubbeswagg) December 3, 2014 S/O to J. Cole for that fire TRUTH he dropped. About time someone said it. Yes, Iggy will sweep the Grammy's next year though. — Natsu Dragneel (@crob_601) December 3, 2014 J. Cole’s third album 2014 Forest Hills Drive arrives in stores and online on December 9. www.rap-up.com/2014/12/03/j-cole-calls-out-eminem-justin-timberlake-iggy-azalea-on-fire-squad/

I wouldn't be so sure she grabs anything. Granted, the Grammys are really political (see Mackerelmore's rap sweep) but I can't say they don't actually award talent. If a real rap artist gets in their sights, then Iggy could easily get iced out.

Macklemore did have the whole same sex kind of record behind them and I feel like what the commiter it peers felt they stood for is kind of different from iggy...if kesha and beiber got paid then most likely she will too.

Welp, can't wait for Iggs to grab that Grammy . ...and she's the only rap/hip-hop nominee for Record of the Year and Best New Artist (both entirely made up of white artists). Song of the Year was entirely made up of white artists too. Will be interesting to see what the Album of the Year nods are. The last time Record of the Year was made up of entirely white artists was 1981.

I'm actually going to give this a listen. The previews sound really good. I thought his first two albums were decent, but I never really got into anything outside of the singles.

This album feels a lot more lowkey than his previous stuff to me. It's definitely stronger than his debut and it's his most consistent album imo. I understand why he didn't, but I think the album would have benefited from some features, that's the only thing that's keeping me from calling this his best album.
Either way, he's released 3 great albums and I think this very well could grow to be my favorite from him.
