Two-For-One: Jeremih - Birthday Sex That what it says on the cue sheets? I'm guessing Ryan will call it by it's more radio-friendly name of "Birthday Shhh", as he did while the song was charting. - Well, the trio of Jessie, Ariana & Nicki get their #1 hit but given that Maroon 5 moved up to #1 on the more recent Mediabase chart, can Tove Lo get screwed next week? Stay tuned. And for two of the three artists on "Bang Bang", it's their first #1 on AT40. Jessie J previously went to #2 with "Domino". Prior to "Bang Bang", Nicki Minaj got up to #3 twice -- "Super Bass" and "Starships". Ariana got her first taste of #1 only a few months back with "Problem". The Maroon 5/Tove Lo standoff could go either way. The chart's still a week behind. It'll all come down to when they decide to play catch-up. If next week is it, then Tove Lo would, most certainly, be in danger.

How many extras is too many extras? Any more than this and I'd begin to wonder if Seacrest was saying much at all during the show, or if instead we were getting a host-less countdown.

Two-For-One: Jeremih - Birthday Sex That what it says on the cue sheets? I'm guessing Ryan will call it by it's more radio-friendly name of "Birthday Shhh", as he did while the song was charting. And in the same top 10 there's "Don't", which also includes the word sex and AT40 doesn't edit or bleep over that. Same for the extra "E.T.", when that was a hit. 12 extras must be a record or close to it for the current AT40; at least they're spaced out fairly well (only two are back to back). Aside from the three yet-to-chart songs, they do mix up older (but not very old; none more than five years) songs with newer ones that weren't big hits; Katy Perry has extras in both those categories. As far as there possibly being too many extras, I'd prefer them over more talk, at least if such talk has little to do with the countdown or the artists/songs therein. Didn't think "Bang Bang" would get to #1; I thought "Habits" would move over it. Whether it does will probably depend on what day's chart they use for next week. Two weeks from now "Animals" should be on top, if it doesn't go 4-1 next week, and it could end up being the last new AT40 #1 of 2014, depending on whether "Don't", "Blame", "Waves", or even "Blank Space" can hold on or move up fast enough. Nick Jonas will guest host the weekend of December 6-7; this week he is at #11, which is one notch higher than his brothers ever got. "Latch" gets a 36th, and probably last, week on with "Am I Wrong" the next most senior hit, while Bebe Rexha finally moves up after 3 weeks at #40. 5SOS' "Amnesia" gets pulled off from a relatively high position, which is the same thing that happened to "She Looks So Perfect". Hozier enters for the first time, while Taylor and Meghan jump in with followups to their #1's.

Didn't think "Bang Bang" would get to #1 The last time "E.T." was an optional, I believe they played the non-Kanye version without "alien sex" (probably so the same song coul be used on the Hot AC version). The version of "Habits" that's being played changes "sex clubs" to "sick clubs." Agreed. Extras are much better than talk. And it's not just less talk that's contributing to all the extras over the past few years. Most songs are clocking in between 3 and 3 1/2 minutes (unless it's Justin Timberlake). When "Bang Bang" was at #2 last week, Ryan mentioned it was the first time since Madonna's "Give Me All Your Luvin'" that 3 solo women had teamed up on the same hit, and he pointed out that Nicki is on both songs. I wonder what the #1 story will be about. Nicki having her first #1 after scoring more than a dozen Top 40 hits? Ariana having another #1 this year?

Actually, it did read "Birthday Shhh". I went with the more common name (would've gone with the alternate title if it was a more offensive word).

Seems like this is still quite behind given the Mediabase charts... This week.. 1. Bang Bang finally makes it to #1 after 15 weeks..
2. Next week will be between Animals and Stay High for #1, my money is on Animals ..
3. 9 through 15 really has been at a stalemate the past few weeks although Love Me Harder does break it up.. Boom Clap at 15 for 3rd straight week; Waves, Jealous and Trumpets remain in the same order, just moving up 1.
4. Latch extends the longest reign of 2014 to 36 weeks... I would prefer AT40 had some sort of recurrent status though for songs past 25 or 30 weeks that fall below 25.
5. Four Weeks remain in 2014.. Animals will likely hold the top spot for at least three of them.
6. Blank Space *should* jump into the top 20 next week..

The #1 story was how this was the first time three solo women on one hit have hit #1. But Ryan mentioned that in 2001, four solo women hit #1 with "Lady Marmalade."
When back-announcing the song, Ryan did say it was Nicki's first #1.
KIIS skipped over the first and last optional songs.

Does anyone noticed that Coldplay, one of the biggest-selling groups of all time, has charted for over a decade and they never ever had a Top 10 hit? "Viva La Vida" was very close to do so, just peaking at #11 in 2008. I was really hoping that "A Sky Full Of Stars" would make it but it fell short. Is there ever going to be a day when Chris Martin and the guys accomplish their goal of making the Top 10?

A sky full of stars is their second biggest hit on the USA (on pop airplay charts and on billboard). On pop they only have another top 20, their first single Yellow

Another bit of trivia, that AT40 shared on Facebook: Nicki Minaj scored her first #1 with her 16th top 40 hit. Aerosmith were the last act to not hit #1 until that late in their chart career, when "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" did so in 1998. (Of course, this should be qualified by the fact that many of Nicki's previous chart appearances were features on what were really others' hits.)

Good fast-paced show. Quite a few plugs for the American Music Awards tonight. A couple of "hot" breakouts this week, with New Flame and Burnin' Up, but Echosmith cooled us off after the second one. Ryan kept us in "suspense" about what was #1 this week till near the end. That Birthday Sex business is really ridiculous. The lyrics to Fireball aren't altered, for example.
