They took a little too long to release this, but at least a video did come out. does the timing of music videos really matter for Alt/Rock success though? I could see it maybe being a problem if this was going to attempt a crossover but I don't see that happening so doesn't seem like that big of a deal. For Pop and the Hot 100 music videos can make or break hits, but I doubt it impacts the rock formats all that much.

Oh I know it doesn't really matter for Rock, it was more of a personal preference for me lol.

The album just got released this week, this is now #1 on alternative, and they just performed it live on Fallon (and did pretty well). Like I said before, it doesn't seem like something that belongs on pop, but it's unique and catchy just like "Float On" was in 2004, so I really think they'll at least give it a go on CHR. You never know unless you try I guess haha.

Yes, but that was pretty much the case in 2004 with Float On too...because at that point pretty much any rock ballad was technically pop friendly and aside from The Killers, anything close to this type of sound on pop was taboo. EDIT: And Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out"...that and "Float On" pretty much both had their pop runs at the exact same time.

This would do nothing if it was sent to Pop. I mean, I'm all for it. But I doubt it would even hit the Top 50.

In fact, the only alt crossover that I thought was more out of left field in the entire 00s was Trapt's "Headstrong". I don't actually think Lampshades is gonna crossover, I should clarify that. I'm just saying that it isn't anywhere near as impossible as it seems IMO.

It does have Pop Crossover potential. I hear it as well. That sorta mono sound did wonders for "Sweater Weather" and "Take Me To Church", but the way that pop chart is saturated; I don't think it would get a fair run on the mainstream Pop chart at all. It would have to have a real extreme pop side to it ,like "Cool Kids" or "Shut Up + Dance"; which it doesn't and even then ;Posters are very unpredictable. MisterWives "Reflections" shoulda caught on to Pop by now...and.. nada.

The album is officially titled Strangers to Ourselves: The Golden Casket Vol. 1, so my guess is that the next album will be a continuation of this one.

So...I can't be the only one who has listened to the album...thoughts from anyone else?

So...I can't be the only one who has listened to the album...thoughts from anyone else? I listened to most of it on Friday, and from an early standpoint, it sounds.... eclectic, to say the least. Although I need to give it a few more listens. However, "The Ground Walks, with Time in a Box" was a standout.

So...I can't be the only one who has listened to the album...thoughts from anyone else? I listened to it, but I'm not an avid Modest Mouse fan, so I don't know if I truly understand the album/them. From my perspective, I liked most of it. This was far and out the standout of the album, and tbh, I don't remember any other songs besides "Coyotes" (only because I have it on my iPod). I'll probably check out the singles as they go along, but other than that, I doubt I'll go back to the album.

Their style doesn't typically mesh with me, so when I listened to it there were only a few standouts. I liked "The Ground Walks, With Time In A Box" and "Wicked Campaign", but the vocal delivery is sometimes too left-field for me to really get into the songs. I've always been a casual, mostly singles fan of Modest Mouse so that didn't surprise me.

Die-hard fan here. It's a bit disappointing after an 8 year wait, there's a couple of boring songs here and there but overall it's a decent album, which is a bit undecent for Modest Mouse standards. "The Ground Walks, With Time in a Box", "Sh*t in Your Cut", "Pups to Dust", "Sugar Boats", "The Tourist and the Tortoise", "The Best Room" and "Of Course We Know" are excellent. "Pistol" is just awful.

I just saw that "Float On" was only #1 for a single week (between Sliver and Just Like You! wow) and so this is now their longest-reigning #1 on Alternative...

Thanks for the correction, "Slither" + "Velvet Revolver" = "Sliver" when I'm not paying enough attention.

I'm surprised by their big comeback on Alternative, tho this type of sound is what's hot on Alt these days I didn't expect it to be so successful...

I wonder what they're going to go with next. There really aren't many radio-friendly songs on the album (but the overall quality of the album is pretty solid).
I think the best single-choice would be to make a shortened edit of "The Ground Walks,t With Time In A Box" and send that.

Any word on the next single?
I vote "Pups To Dust" also.

I'd go with "The Best Room" followed by "Pups to Dust."

I'd go with "The Ground Walks, With Time In A Box" personally, but I wouldn't mind "The Best Room", "Pups to Dust", "Of Course We Know", or "Coyotes".
FWIW, Alt Nation has been playing "The Best Room" sort of regularly on their playlist recently.
