7 I Hear Your Voice Burnin', 1991Can you tell who wrote this song, can you also hear his influence. Patti and Prince get together and give us more please. I can never listen to this without feeling like going YASSSSSSSS. Such a bop, underrated bop within her vast body of work. This song song has that mysterious, sexy and smoking vibe to it that is what I love the most. I love the way her voice almost flows over the beat and the production is top notch. The guitar riffs just take this to another level. TOP NOTCH song in every aspect. What I wouldn't do to be in a smokey lounge listening to this live with a drink in hand. I feel so .... A classic collaboration between two genius of music.

6 If Only You Knew I'm In Love Again, 1983
The minute the song starts you know exactly what you will be listening to. One of the most recognizable and classic Patti songs and its starts right from start that she ain't playing around here.
"I must have rehearsed my lines A thousand times Until I had them memorized But when I get up the nerve To tell you, the words Just never seem to come out right"
For a long time one of my top 3 Patti songs ever, its just that great and as we stand in 2014 clearly only 5 others have surpassed it for me personally but at this point its all greatness for me.
So smooth, so silky and legendress One of the best r&B songs of its time. Filled with heart and soul and musicianship and god given vocal talents. A class in how to record a ballad and make it strike all the right chords. You go OFF Patti :'(. This song has symbolic meaning for me because its the song that pushed me over the edge to being a Patti stan.

8 Over The Rainbow (original album version) The Spirits In It, 1981
Instantly recognizable. A cover that is infamous now. A classic sounding masterpiece of vocal power. She really poured everything into this song and it has that out of this world Patti sound. One of those songs that is now associated with Patti Labelle its just one of those songs where everything just falls into place and works together. Its dreamy, it goes down as well a nice cold drink. Your ears need this. 6 If Only You Knew I'm In Love Again, 1983The minute the song starts you know exactly what you will be listening to. 5 If You Asked me To Be Yourself, 1989
This song was featured in the James Bond Licence to Kill soundtrack and later covered by Celine Dion. In my opinion the best version of this song was Patti's. It had such a ethereal feeling that has always hooked me in. Its a beautiful ballad a pop song if its time that was later taken to greater heights by Celine.
Not quite sure why Celine's version took off and not Patti's but it left Patti wondering too "
"I knew the song was a hit when I recorded it, and I was happy that Celine did it and did so well with it. But the arrangements are so close and we both have pretty powerful voices...so who knows why my version didn't take off. Maybe it was timing..."

4 Love, Need and Want You I'm In Love Again, 1983
A very simple and gorgeous r&b ballad that is smoother than a baby's bottom. I love how Patti arranges this song and the vocals here are just perfection. Its probably most known now through the sample done by Nelly and Kelly but this is probably one of the most beautiful things Patti has recorded. As Mario said and I totally agree with
"I think my favorite Patti song is "Love, Need and Want You." I love how soulful it is and it has a classic R&B sound which I always appreciate. While its popularity has been prolonged to a new generation of listeners by the sample on Nelly's #1 hit "Dilemma" it is still not the song that most represents Patti (that's "If Only You Knew" or "Over The Rainbow") but it's a hell of a record to me.

I love Patti's "If You Asked Me To" more than Céline's. She is right, the arrangements are very close and Patti still has the edge for me. Beautiful song. "Love, Need and Want You"

3 Yo Mister Be Yourself, 1989Another Patti and Prince collaboration in my top 10. This was written by Prince and his influence is felt as he does background too. I have to say this song is just incredible in that that it delivers a message while still being so fun and dancey. It sounds like something Janet Jackson would record. The song is very r&b meets pop meets rock, its a infusion of many different genres and I truly enjoy how Patti starts singing the verses. Vocally starts of very rock like and then builds up into a powerful vocal performance it has everything you want. Lyrically, vocally and production wise its just top notch. "Yo Mister how's your daughter You really ought to know For every thing you taught her Don't matter when she's all alone My crazy friend named Cara After all of us told her, ? No? She givin' up speed ball Now she's going nowhere stoned Her papa caught her on the first time And put her out on the street Cara told me to remind him That she was only 17 Yo Mister how's your daughter (How's your daughter) You really ought to know Every thing you taught her It don't matter when she's all alone Cara got hooked up with the wrong kids Then she started skipping school Then Cara got high top make disappear A world full of fools In her eyes her father was the biggest fool of? Em all And she was speeding, that's what she'd say Maybe, maybe, maybe she wouldn't talk so stupid If she knew whatever she needed is far too gone Yo Mister how's your daughter You really ought to know For every thing you taught her Don't matter when she's all alone She needs you right now Mister ? Cause she ain't got long to live It's so easy to say, ? I love him? But it's hard to forget Her father cried when I told him That Cara twice got knocked up He said, ? Just like her mama, uh-huh She shows her body when she wants to show love She tried that stuff with me and I beat her down? There's no way I could let her stay Couldn't let her stick around ? Cause I tried so hard to raise her right He said, ? What made her turn out this way? I don't know What made her turn out this way I don't know, I don't know And I said and I said and I said Yo Mister how's your daughter You really ought to know (Every thing) Every thing you taught her Don't matter when she's all alone She needs you right now Mister She ain't got long to live It's so easy to say, ? I love him? But it's hard to forget Yo Mister how's your daughter (How's your daughter tonight) Yo Mister how's your daughter (How's your daughter tonight) Yo Mister how's your daughter (How's your daughter tonight) Yo Mister how's your daughter (How's your daughter tonighthorchata this one is dedicated to you no need to be pissed.

Oh phew, glad I can stand off the ledge now. Thank you for the dedication btw and nice to see "Yo Mister" in such high regard on the list here. Prince's production work oozes funk as expected, but the fucking 1-2 punch of Patti's vocals are outstanding and the musicality is endless here. Easily the best song on Be Yourself with "If You Asked Me To" and "Love 89" as runner up/third to that.

2 Somebody Loves You Baby Burnin', 1991
A brilliant recording a r&b ballad that has that gospel sound to me and I truly love the power and sheer brilliance of her voice on this record. I love the laid back production that is kept very simple to allow room for her voice to soar and take full control of the song. Patti sings the verses as well and effective as she ever has here. Clearly by the placement it shows how much I have listened to this song over the years.
One of the best songs Patti has ever put out solo or not.

1 When You Been Blessed Burnin', 1991
Church has arrived day early. My two favorite Patti songs coming from one album along with quite a few other standouts means you might want to check that album out as a introduction to Patti.
What can I say about this song that wont sound understated. This is a VOCAL MASTERPIECE. I get shingles and tingles from this and the hair on the neck of my back stand, its that amazing. A gospel song have that affect on you if its to be deemed to be done right. Its not just the power of her range its also the tone and style she sings with. The song however isn't all about just vocals, whether you like gospel or not it just a beautiful song. Patti has a way of delivering the church material and make it sound like just another ballad.
A well deserved and earned top song imo.
Then this monster of a vocalists goes live and keeps delivering her vocals on the hardest song in a live setting over and over.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this countdown with me! Patti Labelle may not be at the tip of everyone's tongue these days but it should be, always be.
Patti Labelle has been recording music as group or solo artists for an astonishing 5 DECADES worth or 50 plus years. Unbelievable. While Patti Labelle might be overshadowed by some others, she will always be considered a legend, a icon and one of the greatest vocalists of any time. She had a way of delivering a song live or in studio, a power that is unmatched and soul for days. She was a versatile singer who was able to slip and slide out of many different types of songs or genres.
One thing that is grossly unappreciated is that Patti in her own words " before the madonna'sand gaga's" she was pioneer in fashion and style, outlandish and making a statement through outfits. Patti however never let that overshadow her music or talents.
Patti was the perfect blend of celebrity, the voice, the hits, the shade and the personality. She was the ultimate diva.

Hard to believe the biggest decade of Patti's career came when she was 40-50, back when people cared about raw talent...

I like "When You've Been Blessed" but as far as her Gospel songs go my favorite is the iconic "You Are My Friend."
Lovely countdown showcasing the legacy of a true icon. Thank you @spiritanimal for this! We love Mama Patti!

Ignoring the first few seconds of this, but I'd probably give this a nod as being one of her best live performances as well:
Anyway, great choice for your number one and in general enjoyed following this list of course. Patti Labelle is one of those artists that I feel is respected for the most part, but somehow is still underrated as bizarre as it sounds in certain ways. Ugh, never will get over that awful Rolling Stones list where the likes of Christina Aguilera outranked her which was absolute s**t.
