WHO WOULD RAIN ON MEGHAN’S PARADE? As Trainor Prepares for Year’s First Big Debut, The Bible Takes a Puzzling Shot January 13, 2015 Meghan Trainor’s Title (Epic) will bow at #1 on next week’s chart with 175-200k, according to early reads. The artist/songwriter, coming off back-to-back smashes and major Grammy nods, zoomed to #1 at iTunes this morning as her album went live. Reviews (including an “A” in Entertainment Weekly) have been stellar across the board—with one glaring exception. At this vital moment in her career—with Grammy voting coming to a close and show producers weighing her role in the telecast—much chatter surrounds the recent negative review of Trainor’s album in the “industry bible,” which was e-blasted out on Monday. Why this attempt to diminish Trainor at a definitive point, with her star ascendant? BB’s decision-makers want to be power brokers, and see a high-profile review as one way of exercising veto power on rising stars. More importantly, a new, female artist having a debut this big, especially in the first weeks of the year, typically the doldrums for sales—and becoming a major star—is huge news for the biz. Blasting out a dismissive review, which could affect Trainor’s TBD role in the Grammy show, among other consequences, suggests the bible has fully missed the point, and has traded its responsibility as a music-biz trade for a few short-term clicks. Queen of Pop. :'(

:O
Epic finally has their star, after a dismal 4 years of being fronted by L.A. Reid. I kind of thought it wasn't a good idea to push her album back to this year because of how much attention "All About That Bass" got last year, but it seems like "Lips Are Movin" is helping her debut with some solid numbers.

Holy crap. 150k in January. Reminiscent of Ke$ha in 2010.
What did Iggy open with?

Great numbers for Meghan! She's already got a second hit and I can see Title producing at least two more.
lol @ her possibly beating My Everything's opening.

Is that 150k pure-sales or 150k sales/TEA/SEA? If it's the latter, then that probably means 100k pure-album sales.

That's a strong opening. Because of two huge singles could her SPS figure top 200k? I haven't been paying attention to this chart at all, so I really don't know.

Solid opening. I thought it was genius on Epic's decision to move her to January. As expected she has zero competition. Now all we need is a Grammy performance!

I had a feeling she would debut with similar numbers to Ke$ha.
This is just based off of pre-orders though, yeah?

Wow. Did not peg her to be someone that'd stick, but I'm glad I was proven wrong. I like her. She's cute, and she's different, too.

Amazing numbers for her, the fact that Ke$ha pulled the same numbers when album sales were better 5 years ago.
Tbh, I thought she'd be a singles artist, good for her!

Why are people surprised? AATB was MASSIVE and LAM is even better. Good for her! Interested to see if she will have longevity.

Why are people surprised? AATB was MASSIVE and LAM is even better. The number of massive debut singles that didn't result in album sales goes on and on

Not surprised at this number at all. I'm not a fan of All About That Bass, I will be so much pleased if I don't hear that again ever, but Lips Are Movin has grown on me and I like DFH so I'm happy for her.

We have seen tons of albums struggle to sell a lot first week even with massive, huge singles and promotion. It is definitely NEVER a guarantee for a new artist to blow past 150K in sales.

Count me in among the people surprised by her numbers. I don't see the appeal personally and have only heard the second single once or twice so far but it's always nice to see a surprise success and someone capable of bringing in decent numbers. Will she be this year's new pop staple?

I have seen far worse at the top of the album list so yay good for Meghan. Can't say I love her but both songs are nice and she seems talented enough and a sweet girl. Nice to see someone get a smash of their debut album and it translates to album sales.

Meghan has had a clever release strategy with good amount of solid tracks available ahead of the album. 150k of traditional sales is still surprising though

Will she be this year's new pop staple? Add me to the list, I'm surprised as well. I don't see the appeal either, and I was quick and quite anxious to write her off as a one hit wonder. Her music rips at my every nerve but go music industry, I guess! One hit album wonder is a thing, right?
