Alright, I'm on board with this but it's so random and I dislike her vocal performance. It's a cute little campfire bop...like, I want to wear a hoodie, be drunk, and sit around with my homies, passing around a blunt with our arms around each other singing this.

Okay I love this song. Its simple, but catchy at the same time. Obviously probably not the single people expected from her first new album in over 2 years. But, I applaud her for taking the risk every so often with her lead singles. Yes, Russian Roulette wasn't popular, but it still was a nice song. People hated on We Found Love at first, and it became her biggest hit. Just wait and see, this song might surprise everyone. I still remember the, now iconic, post somebody made on here when WFL came out: "They dropped Cheers for this?! LMFAO" The other one was "Its gonna flop becuz the lyrics are repetitive!?!?". Lol

Russian Roulette was and still is an epic song, radio couldn't appreciate it at the time because songs like Bad Romance and Tik Tok were the soup du jour.
It will be interesting to see how this performs, a lot of Rih's singles are growers. Like someone said earlier, people didn't embrace "We Found Love" right away, I also remember people initially not feeling "What's My Name" and "Diamonds".

The only thing that concerns me is that some new radio queens have been established in Rih's absence (Ariana, Iggy, Lorde, Taylor, etc) Hopefully Rih can get her crown back@

Agree with LPL! I think RR marked her biggest step from generic to more serious artist. I think it had much more success internationally than domestically... But more than chart wise, it was a great move career wise. Rude Boy was the #1 song of the album, but the fact that she sang a song with that title after the Chris Brown incident, and the type of song it was, I think it was just another of her hits. RR showed maturity, darkness and even vocal strength.

The only part I'm sold on is the chorus, the "singer" on Kanye's verse is annoying, and the only thing that bugs me about Rih's part is the strained notes...
Can't wait for the next single, but I'll enjoy this one as much as I can.

I'm seeing lots of good points in this thread. Someone somewhere (possibly Rihanna herself and almost certainly Kanye) is probably convinced that this is going to be some type of "Sexyback" initial WTF-turned-avant garde pop cultural moment. I just don't think "risky" and "adventurous" are a substitute for being good, which I don't think this is.
As far as the "Russian Roulette" comparison, I don't think it's valid because as expressed above, that song served a very defined purpose in addition to actually being good. If she started that album campaign "Only Girl" or even "Rude Boy," she might have scored a quick hit but she would have seemed utterly detached. No, I don't think many remember RR outside of the Navy and music superfans, but it was very genuine and brave given the context. This seems neither genuine nor brave. It comes across as Rihanna trying to be Madonna, Kanye trying to be Jesus, and the two dragging Paul along for the ride.
I'm also not thrilled because this is the first time Rihanna's creative evolution has seemed pretentious or forced. Every time she's taken a risk, she's simply taken it, let the music speak for itself and been rewarded. No talk about being a creative genius, no blabbering about innovation, art and all the nonsense we've associated with Kanye, Madonna, Justin, etc. While she hasn't actually opened her mouth yet, this is the first time that she seems to be buying her own hype, musically speaking.
Maybe I'm underestimating Rihanna and this is the next "We Found Love." Her instincts haven't been wrong in the past. But I think they are this time.

Reminds me of a stripped down, lesser "Picture" by Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock for some reason. I like it, just don't love it yet.
I love how often she changes shit up and keeps people guessing.

Which shows this isn't resonating with the public just yet. New Rihanna? Should be #1 within a few hours and stay there with ease.

None of her lead singles have gone straight to #1 on itunes just after they were released. They usually peak in sales after some promo.

I totally respect your musical taste, but just because you don't like the song doesn't mean the GP won't like it. #3 Itunes btw.

LMFAO Please... There are songs that go number one on pop that barely make top twenty on Itunes (Give your heart a break). I'm sorry. I must have missed the period when Rihanna and Demi Lovato were on the same level. [LOL. Do you realize how huge Uptown Funk is? I must not (I try to tune it out) but in any case Rihanna is one of the biggest international pop stars on the planet right not and just dropped her first new material since 2012. Even if it's short lived, I'd have expected a faster, deeper rise to the top of the sales chart based on core fans and curiosity buys alone. I do agree that it's too soon to tell how this will do in the long run though.

I have to admit with the long wait for a new song this time and the hype around the collaboration I expected her to at least oust Ed from #2. That looks like it may not happen though. But, it is a good point that her singles usually aren't insane sellers first day or week and rather grow into smash hits so not necessarily a bad sign.

Melodically and lyrically, this is basically "Cheers" with a guitar. And honestly, I can see her just chilling out with a guitar and singing something like this; it doesn't feel against her image at all for me. Okay sure, she's getting in on the Kanye/McCartney circle jerk thing, but this isn't the first time she's teamed up with the artist du jour. You're getting mad at her because you think that when she starts hitting the media circuit she's going to blabber on about being an artist? Maybe give her a chance to talk about it before you decide her mindset and hang her for it. She might just do exactly what you acknowledge she's always done in the past.

I recall the reactions to "Russian Roulette" and "Diamonds" being more along the lines of "this is a boring lead single" than "this is a terrible song". Well they are. I still don't listen to those sh!ts. Blah! "Roulette" still hasn't gotten a full play from me.

Russian Roulette is good for me, but I only listen to it every once in a while.
Diamonds was awful for me at first and I grew to enjoy it! (It became a #1 on my personal chart later on)

It's not a particularly instant song, and initial reactions have been mixed. Of course it wasn't going to go to #1 in record time. I don't see this ever hitting the top either, but I don't think she really cares. If she did, this wouldn't have been the single.
Literally screaming at comparing a lead Rihanna single to a fluke Demi hit's iTunes run, though. What?

You ain't seen nothing yet. From the previous examples given from what people said about WFL, I'm ready for the madness!!! Most of her singles are pretty instant for me though, but with Unapologetic's singles took a little time, same with this one, for me to warm up to. Okay but seriously what is that awful singing during Kanye's verse.

I though he was actually on point. He and Gambino can sing decent for being predominantly rappers.
