Singles: Luxury: Cococure Didn't Reach Hot 100 or Hot R&B/Rap Songs Infamous Maxwell video with him in the tub giving all kind of seductiveness. Matrimony: Maybe You Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs #79 Peak Also includes arguably one of my favorite Maxwell/Song of All Time: Drowndeep: Hula Certified 1x Platinum but critics were so on the fence because it was a big alternative departure to his debut. This album in retrospect seems like one of the bases for the current trend of where "Alternative" R&B is going. Less about melody and more about ambiance. One of my favorite albums.

I haven't listened to this album in so long but I've been playing Now out the past few days so I'll probably give this another listen sometime soon.
I definitely think this was ahead of its time.

'Submerge: Til We Become The Sun' is one of my fave songs from him. This album is hella chilled, truly ahead of its time & a wonderful body of work.

My least favorite of his albums, but it's still fantastic.

I've been meaning to listen to this again. It's definitely the one I spin the least from him. The point about it being influential to the rise of what is called alt/hipster-R&B is interesting. I've never considered it directly influential because the gap in between was so long but they do look to similar sources for inspiration.

My favorite Maxwell album. It's not without it's flaws and I understand the WTF reaction it got on release, but the album's strengths make up for those issues. First, the negatives, some of the lyrics are a tad too new-agey/esoteric and the ridiculous song-titles just compounded that. But they're just song-titles! Whatever. And this was clearly an album that was intended to be a groove rather than a lyrical dissection. Which brings us to that groove part, the production on this is so f**king plush and luxurious. Handsdown the best production of his career, so many subtle touches. This has to be one of the best produced R&B albums released in my lifetime. And his voice just floats above every instrumental and the vocal layering and background vocals are so excellent throughout.
I put this album on and just let it play from beginning to end and it's such a f**king MOOD. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.

This album is a favorite of mine. It's his best body of work. Neo-soul wouldn't have be the same without him. It's amazing that this album still holds up after all these years.
