Although Carrie was good, Lady Gaga was magnificent.

Carrie did an excellent job... but Lady Gaga blew me the F away. I didn't know she had that in her.

Gaga did it better, and by a lot--which is not to say Carrie wasn't good. Gaga's voice and training is more suited to this type of music, but even so, what she did was stupendous and better than I would have ever imagined. I don't think there is a mainstream female act right now who could have done as well as she did.

Both delivers vocal perfections.
Gaga can add some 'acting' into her performance, that's why it feels more 'alive'.
While Carrie is focusing more on her vocal and singing technique.

Gaga by far. I don't think Maria's character suited Carrie well at all. Obviously, Carrie is amazing...but I just don't think it was a good role for her.

I don't know. Carrie looks the part better, and neither can sing like Julie Andrews or many other people on Broadway. But I think Gaga hits closer to the mark and I'm just guessing she might be a bit better as an actress, so I'll go with her.

^Yes, neither have the beauty and clarity of Andrews, that's why I brought up Kylie's version. But Kylie is a soprano so it's a much easier song for her than for two mezzo-borderline-altos. But out of Carrie and Gaga, Carrie was def. light years ahead of Gaga in terms of aesthetics. Firstly, Carrie is gorgeous. Gaga is very likable but extremely awkward looking while singing. Secondly, Gaga's performance was pitch- and note-perfect and no one can deny the amount of discipline she has to pull off something so unexpected and flawlessly executed. But her performance also was very unoriginal and at times reminded me of college musical theater. Carrie on the other hand made it her own and didn't have that amateurish eagerness to play by the rules like Gaga. Carrie has an undeniably better instrument. It has such beauty, range, depth, power and richness that it overcomes Gaga's vocal limitations, which forced Gaga to stick to a very safe rendition (which was totally opposite of her sassier Cheek to Cheek songs). Gaga just doesn't even come close to possessing the natural vocal ability of a Streisand or Audra McDonald, or in this case even an Underwood (or Menzel) that we should even be talking about her voice; it's her courage that's impressive. The glowing reaction (and seeing all those smug plastic faces giving her a standing ovation, like Nicole Kidman--who can actually sing well herself) was just another moment Hollywood "dazzled" us but I didn't fall for it. So I guess Shonda Rimes and I are a party of two. And Sondheim makes three: www.people.com/article/stephen-sondheim-hated-lady-gagas-oscars-performance
