Wow, I'm so shocked at all the sold out shows by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr., .38 Special. Does anyone know how long these acts have been touring together? I went to see LS and .38S, what was it - last December... Hank Jr. wasn't there. Just curious, I don't really follow tours that much.

I think I've said it, I'm not sure. But I'll say it again: I am so shocked that Martina isn't selling out these 5 and 6 thousand seat venues. First of all, it's Martina. Second of all, she has two pretty big up and coming acts with her. Very unusual, if you ask me.
EDIT: I just checked, and yes, I already said that, lol. It still makes no sense to me.

Martina received funny looking awards from the venues in Uncasville, CT and Duluth, GA recently for selling them out again. I saw the pics in Country Weekly. Pollstar had her tour as one of the Top 10 highest grossing so far this year, too.

Pollstar had her tour as one of the Top 10 highest grossing so far this year, too. And she did indeed sell out those venues: Martina McBride, Little Big Town, Rodney Atkins Mohegan Sun Arena Uncasville, Conn. April 20, 2007 $343,605 7,583 / 7,583 1 / 1 $65, $50 Live Nation/in-house Martina McBride, Little Big Town, Rodney Atkins Arena at Gwinnett Center Duluth, Ga. May 5, 2007 $460,893 10,302 / 10,302 1 / 1 $49.75, $36.75 Police Productions/Beaver Productions It's probably her ticket sales in general that people are surprised about? I am too, considering I've heard how amazing she is live and those non-sellout venues are mid-size. She'll probably still end up in the top 10 at year-end, like she was last year. I expect the same acts to make the list because well, they're basically the same acts embarking on major tours. Top 10 country tours of 2006 (Total gross) 1. Tim McGraw & Faith Hill, $88,808,729 2. Kenny Chesney, $65,975,442 3. Rascal Flatts, $46,214,743 4. Toby Keith, $37,738,077 5. Brad Paisley, $27,742,368 6. Dixie Chicks, $23,024,881 7. George Strait, $17,132,602 8. Brooks & Dunn, $16,934,805 9. Keith Urban, $10,244,031 10. Martina McBride, $9,210,228 SOURCE: Billboard ... except add Alan Jackson to B&D since they're co-headlining and someone else will enter to take the Dixie Chicks spot. Likely Reba McEntire. I'm actually a bit surprised with Dierks' ticket sales too. That and his album sales. A bit low considering he was hailed as the next male superstar and he had that #1 streak with singles. Also, gotta give props to Kenny. He really sells out each and every seat at HUGE venues each and every single time. Wow.

(Besides his Tennessee concerts). Just curious. I know George Strait routinely drew 50,000+ during his country music festivals a little while back, but it helps when you've got multiple superstar acts on your tour.

I hate listening to music at festivals like that. Only time I attended Fan Fair, I skipped all the concerts at the old fairgrounds location. LOL
I only go to concerts if I can get good seats. I've had last row inside a basketball arena once and that was last straw.

True, multiple superstar opening acts do help, but as long as I've been following ticket sales (admittedly more closely this year and last than before), Kenny has had complete sellouts at every concert--selling out with record-breaking speed, regardless of who in the star stable is doing the honors. I would think those superstar acts benefit more opening for him than he does with them opening. Did that make sense? I mean, they need him more than he does them. Regardless of how much effect those opening acts have on his sellouts, those numbers are amazing per se, IMO. And I'm not even a Kenny fan. I just had to acknowledge it (the consistent sellouts).

I agree with that. I don't understand people who say Kenny wouldn't do as well without big acts. Whether you're a fan of him or not, it's difficult to say that he's not the most successful touring act in music right now. Other tours might make more revenue, but I'm pretty sure he plays to the most fans every year. And he sold out Gillette Stadium (50,000+) last year when the opening acts were Dierks, Carrie, Gretchen, and Big & Rich. I love Carrie and Dierks, but you can't tell me the show wouldn't have sold out without them.

I really don't consider the money list that big of a deal. Let's not forget Tim/Faith tickets are quite a bit more expensive than Kenny's. I'm more interested in how many butts were in the seats! I do enjoy seeing these figures for that reason. Another thing to consider is the top five on that list have a much heavier touring schedule than 6-10. Thanks for sharing these stats with us. It's very interesting and enlightening.

Thanks leila, that's really cool. Even though it's the same 10 in both categories, it's interesting to see the changes based on attendance.

I really don't consider the money list that big of a deal. Let's not forget Tim/Faith tickets are quite a bit more expensive than Kenny's. I'm more interested in how many butts were in the seats! Why the diminished importance on revenue? An artist/manager will charge as much as they can get away with to maximize revenue. Higher revenue/ticket generally means that overall demand is higher for your concert. What is more impressive-- an artist who sells out an arena of 20,000 for $81/ticket or an artist who sells out an arena of 20,600 fo $58/ticket? The venue size is about the same for all intents and purposes but the clearly the first artist did well to command an average of $23 more per ticket. These numbers are analogous and exactly proportional to Kenny's and Tim/Faith's concert attendance/revenue numbers. Kenny's concerts drew 3% more in attendance, or what amounts to 2 arena shows (about 35,000). I'm sure if Tim/Faith put on 2 more shows they could have tied the attendance mark. I think what's more impressive is the over $20 million in revenue they were able to draw in fewer shows. This indicates demand--a willingness and desire to see a concert. Yes, Kenny had a very successful year of touring. Yes, he's proably the hottest touring star right now. But I think you have to admit that overall, Tim/Faith had the most successful country tour of 2006. On a side note, it would be interesting to see average attendance per show and the % of seats sold. Those would also be indicative numbers of demand and tour success. Another thing to consider is the top five on that list have a much heavier touring schedule than 6-10. That would certainly stand to reason. There's a high correlation between number of tour dates and total attendance/revenue. Shocking, I know. ;)

I mean, they need him more than he does them. I totally agree. It just seems like Kenny always has a bonanza of artists on his touring bill. I was just curious if he has sold out any 50,000+ venues with just 1 opening act. That would truly be a remarkable feat for a country artist.

The Soul II Soul Tour 2007 doesn't seem to be as popular this year as it was last year. I guess that makes sense. They should have probably lowered the prices since this is the second year in a row for what most people will perceive to be the same show.

Whenever I see concert reviews, I sometimes consider posting them, but am never sure if people will be interested. Anyway, concert reviews may not be worthy of their own thread, but allow me to post this particular one here. I found it interesting. www.ocregister.com/entertainment/rimes-country-swift-1793706-year-newLeAnn Rimes boldly forges ahead at Pacific By BEN WENER The Orange County Register Had there been some sort of scream-o-meter just to the side of Pacific Amphitheatre's stage Tuesday night, it very likely might have registered louder response for opening act Taylor Swift than for headliner LeAnn Rimes. If you keep up with mainstream country, you've already figured out why this happened. Swift, a 17-year-old phenom currently experiencing an ascendancy akin to Rimes' a decade ago, has a platinum self-titled debut that currently sits atop Billboard's top country albums chart – ahead of Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and the man whose name gave Swift her first smash single, Tim McGraw. Fresh out of high school, she writes and sings about what little she knows of life – primarily young crushes and the heartbroken overreactions that can come when they fizzle out. Consequently, she is positively huge with both teen and 'tween girls, who comprised the majority of this night's near-capacity crowd. Rimes, on the other hand, hasn't issued an album in two years, and her last attempt at breaking away from Nashville's narrow confines ("This Woman") didn't exactly set either the country or pop worlds ablaze. She has a new one due in October; dubbed "Family," it's already the 10th effort from the almost-25-year-old. And from the sound of the new songs offered Tuesday it appears to be a breakthrough on several levels: She co-wrote every track, a first, so it's shaping up to be her most self-reflective work, plus what she aired here came across far more informed by blues-rock. Yet her new material garnered merely polite applause. Meanwhile, much of this audience amazingly seemed to know the choruses of Swift's unreleased stuff (unavailable on record until next year). They sang along – shouted along, really – to everything the twig with the curly blonde mane delivered after indulging a few ill-fitting bars of Eminem's "Lose Yourself" to get started. Does this mean some country-pop paradigm has shifted? Well, if so, the mantle of most adored Heartland ingénue has been passed to Underwood, not Swift, who so far is only a very minor talent of minimal range, with a voice that's plain, reedy, sometimes flat and very rarely pretty. She may have more going for her than this comparison allows, but at Pacific she seemed little more than a country Ashlee Simpson. By contrast, Rimes is more like a warmer Christina Aguilera – powerhouse pipes backed by mature stage presence, slinky allure (that green slip of a dress she donned was an eye-grabber) and a determination to evolve every step of the way. There's no question she can sing circles around Swift – frankly, that's an uneven match-up in every respect. The increasingly lithe Rimes has such a remarkable and deftly controlled voice that she easily trumps Shania Twain's pleasant tone and could out-wail Faith Hill most any time. Of today's country divas, only the astonishingly gifted Martina McBride is a more forceful yet malleable singer. And only the Dixie Chicks (whom Rimes should lobby hard to open for next time 'round) and Gretchen Wilson are more successful at blurring the boundaries between pop, rock and country. Rimes' last two discs haven't been as impressive at achieving freshly enticing hybrids out of those genres as one might have hoped, but her eagerness to explore remains admirable. Better still, on stage her ambition for gentle barrier-busting really comes to the fore. Note the overall absence of straight-up country tunes in her set – the Patsy Cline homage "Blue" was pretty much the only one, as even the two-steppin' "Big Deal" was given a dose of heavier guitar and a Linda Ronstadt feel, while newer tunes like "Nothing 'Bout Love Makes Sense" and "Probably Be This Way" were infused with arena riffs primed for Star 98. Note, too, the close-to-the-bone dysfunctional portraits from "Family," two of which rocked with punch, a third of which (the becalming "What I Cannot Change") echoed the high-pitched anguish of Tori Amos in its chorus. Also note Rimes' taste in covers: a robust (if almost overwrought) reading of the Gershwins' "Summertime" inspired by Janis Joplin and a storming rendition of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" to conclude her encore. It was a potent enough performance to convince me that Rimes may finally be hitting her stride after having spent the better part of a decade fumbling around for an appropriate style. She could become a bigger presence in popular music yet. What a shame, then, that so many young fans and their parents seemed to lose interest two-thirds into her set, large chunks of rows exiting the amphitheater to queue up for an autograph session with Swift. So far Swift is nothing more than a cute flavor of the moment whose squealing minions will soon enough outgrow her inch-deep "Hannah Montana"-gone-country ditties. Rimes, on the other hand, is a performer worth taking seriously, even when she stumbles. She deserves better than to be a come-down for 12-year-olds hyper from seeing a new sensation.

^^^Interesting review. That reminds me, what are Lila McCann and Jessica Andrews up to these days? Clearly it seems that Rimes has the talent to reinvent herself and build a serious career now that she's in her adulthood. I wonder whether Taylor will take after Lila or Leann. ???

Wow, that is an interesting review. The reviewer completely bashed Taylor Swift in every way possible.
All I can do is wait and hope that LeAnn hits it big again.
