Ok, so I like this song, but I find it a bit asinine. Like she is trying to make a statement with the song, but all that came out was the words "America, America" and "breathe" and "oxygen". I'm all for her experimenting with new sounds/making deeper music, but either fully commit to the bit or don't lol. I can just see Kanye listening to this saying "yo this shit's gonna make history", and I shudder at that thought.
But I do like the production and the chants in the chorus. I just wish there was some actual depth to the lyrics, even just a little bit.

I just wish there was some actual depth to the lyrics, even just a little bit. I mean, the first verse is telling the story of her life while the second is painting a picture of so many young males, particularly minorities, these days. If that's not deep I don't know what is.

I see that, I just feel the point could have been illustrated in a more heartfelt way I guess. I don't know if I'd call it telling a story, for the simple fact that there's only one or two lines in each verse that even illustrates that point really. The second verse is essentially a repeat with a line changed. The rest seems just lazy/filler to me with breathe/America/oxygen. Just bugs me.

Hopefully we can get a Z100 or KIIS add this week.. KIIS added it on the adds date But yeah, I agree: we need Z100 and other Top10 Pop stations to jump on board. The AI gains have been small compared to the 100+ spin updates it's been getting due to mostly small stations playing the song at the moment. Just bugs me.I've seen other people point this out and I kind of agree. My main criticism with this song is that its original version is way too long and repetitive. Had they included different lyrics throughout, maybe it wouldn't feel so repetitive.

I feel like the video adds the depth that the lyrics themselves don't. And I have a feeling that this was at least partly intentional, but I cannot say for sure...I only know that the song ended up going through a few lyric changes b/c the original writer was going in another direction with it, and Rihanna and someone else came up with the immigrant angle. I have yet to her the radio edit, but I presume the shorter length helps.
Which brings me back to my original and one gripe with the song, which is the way it was originally released. The video is where all the buzz potential lay and they squandered it on Tidal; the vid basically went nowhere despite it being so relevant to today's headline news. to try to push it now in conjunction with things (Freddie Gray for example) would probably feel inauthentic so I'd rather they not, but it doesn't seem like there are any plans to perform this any time soon other than on SNL (if she even performs it there - and it's Ri so there's really no guarantee). Well at least it looks like it will go top 20 on pop, if that most recent big update is any indication.

Z100 is just snubbing her for some reason. They still hammer S&M and We Found Love pretty much every day, they could easily play her latest singles if they wanted.

American Oxygen got 29 adds on Pop radio, 2nd most added tied with "The Night Is Still Young". 82/186 stations (44% of the panel) have added the song in 3 weeks!

This has really grown on me and I actually now think the chorus is the catchiest hook from this era so far. The radio edit also does wonders and cuts out a lot of the unneeded excess. Only thing I still don't like is her vocals on the chorus. They're so harsh and man-ish sounding.

The video is where all the buzz potential lay and they squandered it on Tidal This so much. The video was this songs best chance at making an impact (the mixing of this track is really unfortunate as far as hit potential is concerned), and they just threw it on Tidal without any mention of its content (i.e. even less reason for anyone not following her closely to seek it out) and then unceremoniously dumped it elsewhere. I'm not expecting this to make the top 20 here. I'd like to be proven wrong, and I don't think this will affect her much since 45S was a hit and BBHMM is doing damage elsewhere, but from paper to record to release, they've gradually flattened and blundered this songs' potential.

This already took a big tumble on the Hot 100 this week. Back down into the 90's in week three. Z100 is just snubbing her for some reason. They still hammer S&M and We Found Love pretty much every day, they could easily play her latest singles if they wanted. Why would they play a song that would polarize their audience though? I'm a big Rihanna fan and I'd far more likely stay on the station for "We Found Love" than I would with "American Oxygen." The public has spoken with clarity: not feeling this.

up until RiRi listens tbh Of all the message boards on all the internets on all of earth, I somehow doubt that Pulse would have any influence whatsoever on Rihanna. She'd take one look at the FFS thread, lol, and never come back. Then release a Polka album on your birthday. Because SHE DOESN'T CARE.

I'm a big Rihanna fan and I'd far more likely stay on the station for "We Found Love" than I would with "American Oxygen." The public has spoken with clarity: not feeling this. Has it though? Not being argumentative necessarily (I think the flat and low sales despite increasing airplay don't point in its favor) but I don't think a lot of people have even heard it so far (it's not yet showing up on callout list), which puts it at a catch-22 - we won't know if the average listener is okay with it until it's played more, but Z100 may be hesitant to play it more until they think the average listener would be okay with it. More precisely, they don't know if this is truly polarizing to the point that people will change the station, or if it is at worst something that would get a lukewarm "eh, not interested in buying it, but wouldn't change the station if it came on" reaction. I don't think radio minds much if it's the latter. They just don't want you to turn the dial. Also I think skizzo is saying that Z100 has snubbed ALL of her singles so far, not just AO (correct me if I'm wrong skizzo). It's understandable if they haven't jumped on AO and didn't continue spinning BBHMM after that first day, but did they really not play FFS? If that is the case it is curious indeed and goes beyond one song in particular supposedly being polarizing.

She owns Twitter, owns Instagram, is all over the media. People know she has new music out- usually her name alone is enough for a song to rise quickly on iTunes. I just think the signs aren't looking good. If this were a song people wanted to get into, it would be stable in sales and streaming even with the limited airplay it has now. Other topic: Z100 definitely played FFS a fair amount for a while.

I think part of the problem with this too is it's one of those songs most people are gonna need to hear like 3x before they really know what to think. Like the first time I was like "WTF, NO" and then the second time I was a little more interested and then I realized there's actually a very strong hook and a hit sounding song after all. It's just the mixing and the vocals do hide that fact a bit, but it is still there. This one definitely needed the good rollout to help it get going, and of course this is one time that didn't happen.

It's a *Rihanna* song with 39,000 paid downloads after three weeks - and only 8000 downloads during the week it reached the Top 40 at pop.
The numbers/buzz just aren't giving anyone a reason to get excited.

The Tidal exclusivity + pretty much abandoning this since it was uploaded elsewhere is really hurting its chances. Hopefully when the album comes out, the singles' rollout improves a bit.

There's definitely things that could've been handled better about this era so far, but I also think it's just natural/inevitable that she'd have a truly under-performing era eventually. From AGLM - Unapologetic
- each sold at least 1 million - each produced at least 2 Top 10 Hot 100 hits (including at least 1 No. 1)
Nobody can keep up that kind of steady success for decade after decade. By NO means am I saying her career is "over", just that she isn't always going to do as well as she'd been doing for basically 10 years straight.
