I didn't expect Nick Jonas' "Jealous" to be that huge of a hit.

I didn't expect Nick Jonas' "Jealous" to be that huge of a hit. Or "Chains".

Rascal Flatt's cover of "Life Is A Highway" becoming a top 20 hit, despite the fact that it's a cover, and was never released as an official single. Even now, it seems to be regarded as one of their biggest hits, and I hear it mentioned much more frequently than I ever thought I would. What's even more impressive is how "My Wish" (which was released just as "Life Is A Highway" took off, was completely unaffected as went on to spend two weeks at #1 and is still played to this day - so is "Life Is A Highway"). I think that shows how hot they were in 2006. What's even more weird is that many people in my generation and the younger generation don't even realize Rascal Flatt's cover of "Life Is a Highway" is, in fact, a cover. I honestly couldn't believe it when I heard a group of people talking about the song, one asked who it was by, another responded with Rascal Flatts. That's when I chimed in with, "yeah, they did the famous cover for Cars, but the original is by Tom Cochrane," and they were all surprised to hear it was a cover. It's not like the song is even that old. Its from 1991. Just goes to show how big of a hit Rascal Flatts' version really was. Very much so a Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You" situation.

AWOLNATION - "Sail." I don't think anything will ever top that one for me. The interminable run made it even weirder and more fascinating.
Foster The People - "Pumped Up Kicks" is a close second.

Phillip Phillips - Home. To think that it will be the best selling Idol coronation song.... Isn't it the best selling single by an Idol contestant, period? Of course, if "Before He Cheats", "No Air" or "Since U Been Gone" had been released in the prime digital age, that wouldn't be.

Take Me To Church, quite obviously. Who would have know this Irish singer could reach top 5 all over the world with such a dark song?

I was always a bit perplexed how "Gimme That Girl" spent two weeks at #1 and was one of the years biggest hits in 2010 for Joe Nichols. The song's fine - certainly catchy - but I just did not see the success it had coming.

I didn't expect Story of My Life to be such a huge hit for One Direction. Their singles usually peak big with poor radio support, but Story Of My Life had great longevity and radio support and gave them their biggest hit since their debut.
I also didn't expect Jealous to be such a big hit - I mean, after the failed attempt at Joe Jonas having a solo career, and Nick Jonas comes out of nowhere with a single that outperforms Demi Lovato's & Selena Gomez's singles.

Gangnam Style and Thrift Shop. Came out of nowhere with viral videos. Not complaining though as they are two of my favorite songs of the decade, admittedly.

Cher - Believe. It really did kickstart the whole movement of dance-pop Metro inspired singles like "When The Heartache Is Over" by Tina Turner, "Angel" by Lionel Richie, "Be With You" by Enrique, "Not Over You Yet" by Diana Ross, "I Will Go With You" by Donna Summer, "Crazy Way About You" by Rene Froger, "On A Night Like This" by Kylie Minogue, "Sex Bomb" by Tom Jones/Mousse T, etc. I was SO hoping Donna Summer scored a hit with "I Will Go With You". I remember back then some PD's actually said they thought it may turn into a "Believe" type hit. I remember her label putting some push behind it. She got some decent promo spots, videos and 2 remix cd singles were released. Maybe it was her image? Because Cher did seem a lot more hip at the time.

Well it was a hit in the UK. Obviously not anywhere near as huge as Believe, but it did reach the top10 and got played on MTV Europe.

(1st post around ) Pludo - Haywire "Most surprising hit" comes as advertised, I'll be surprised and thrilled if this becomes a hit. Learned about it just a few days ago and it was an instant addiction. Amazing combo of looping+live drumming, accompanied by a street performer attitude. Check : www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhHsFQ7sjYg

Phillip Phillips - Home. To think that it will be the best selling Idol coronation song.... Was just coming here to post this! When he sang it at the finale, I was incredibly underwhelmed... The song was definitely a grower though! It became the anthem for the Olympics, it was featured in commercials, and literally all over the radio, and I had predicted it to flop from the start... haha. I was definitely surprised by this one!

My cousins (the eldest being 16) did not know that Nicki sampled the 90s song for "Anaconda", they thought it was new. I was mortified lol.

To me, "Take Me to Church" was a surprise hit. Probably wouldn't have reached #2 on the Hot 100 had it not been for the Beats commercial.

"Motivation" by Kelly Rowland. After several failed attempts at having a hit in the U.S. she finally got it with this one. I was so, so happy for her even though the song is meh IMO. "Chanté's Got a Man" by Chanté Moore. Chanté always charted inside the R&B charts but never had a shot at capturing mainstream audiences. This one turned into her only top 10 single. "Set Fire to the Rain" by Adele. It didn't even have a music video yet it reached #1 fff. Slayage! "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke. I never thought Robin would have one hell of a mainstream hit and also that the very same hit would be the start of his downfall. "Million Dollar Bill" by Whitney Houston. It's funny how it only charted at #100 on the Hot 100 while UK gorls loved it and it reached #5 there. "Adorn" by Miguel. Beautiful song, but I thought it'd never make it past the R&B charts. I was wrong. "Call On Me" by Janet Jackson & Nelly. It was only a moderate hit both in the US (Top 30) and UK (Top 20), but still impressive to me considering all the blacklisting from Viacom, Clear Channel and the like and the GP's impressions of Janet at the time.
