Maroon 5 - Love Somebody. I know they were on a roll but I thought not releasing "Lucky Strike" would come back to haunt them. DJ Snake & Lil Jon - Turn Down For What. It had barely any lyrics and I didn't think it would fit on radio. Florida-Georgia Line feat. Nelly - Cruise (Remix). Yeah it was catchy but I thought the country aspect of the song would instantly turn off pop listeners.

(Everybody's Free To) Wear Sunscreen - Baz Luhrmann
Who would have thought a 5 minute, spoken word would turn into a top 20 radio hit?

THIS. DIL and Superpower are the only songs I skip when listening to this album nowadays. Blow should've been the multi-format lead single, much stronger IMO. I guess Bey didn't want to be even more of a risk-taker with a song about cunnilingus. "Call On Me" by Janet Jackson & Nelly. It was only a moderate hit both in the US (Top 30) and UK (Top 20), but still impressive to me considering all the blacklisting from Viacom, Clear Channel and the like and the GP's impressions of Janet at the time.
I was going to post this one. I was shocked when this became a multi-week R&B #1 on Billboard. Mostly because I think it's one of Janet's weakest offerings as a single. I can see what Virgin was going for, that the inclusion of Nelly would allow for more radio play, but there are MUCH stronger songs on 20 Y.O. like "Enjoy," "Do It To Me," and "This Body." I'd rather listen to the singles from Janet Jackson and Dream Street over this.

What's even more impressive is how "My Wish" (which was released just as "Life Is A Highway" took off, was completely unaffected as went on to spend two weeks at #1 and is still played to this day - so is "Life Is A Highway"). I think that shows how hot they were in 2006. What's even more weird is that many people in my generation and the younger generation don't even realize Rascal Flatt's cover of "Life Is a Highway" is, in fact, a cover. I honestly couldn't believe it when I heard a group of people talking about the song, one asked who it was by, another responded with Rascal Flatts. That's when I chimed in with, "yeah, they did the famous cover for Cars, but the original is by Tom Cochrane," and they were all surprised to hear it was a cover. It's not like the song is even that old. Its from 1991. Just goes to show how big of a hit Rascal Flatts' version really was. Very much so a Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You" situation. Believe it or not, Tom Cochrane did even better than Flatts. He ended up taking this to number 6 in 1991. Just one spot ahead of Flatts in 2006. Off the top of my head: Gangnam Style by Psy---It's a Korean song by an unknown. No way this gets to #2. Incomplete by BSB---Five years after their last gasp, they end up in #13 with this song Ordinary World by Duran Duran---8 years after their last number one and 5 years after their last top 5, they strike again at #3. Everybody's Free by Baz Luhrman---Director only hit #45 in the US but landed #1 in Ireland and the UK One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head---Who knew a song about chess would land at #3 in the US? Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman---Seven years after Fast Car ended in the top 10, this ends up at #3.

Rihanna- This is what you came for, Work and Needed me have more streams then Umbrella and We Found Love. This is because those songs came out when Spotify was fully popular. Umbrella came out when Spotify didn't even exist yet.

agreed, specifically it being as big as it was after midnight sky underperformed (which at the time struck me as the sort of song where if it wasn't gonna get her a hit then nothing would) speaking of #1 debuts, i remember rapstar by polo g feeling like it came out of nowhere, especially since he hasn't rly had a hit since. drivers license too, although that one at least makes sense in retrospect as the beginning of the olivia rodrigo phenomenon (getting a #1 debut with ur debut single is still wild tho)

I’d also put gangnam style by psy in the category of surprising meme hits
