This is really good. I hope it does really well.
I kind of thought he may be Gay when I started listening to it. I know straight guys sing dance music to but this has a happier feel to it.

This is realllly good. I hope it does realllly wellll. I kind of thought he may be Gay when I started llistening to it. I know straight guys sing dance music to but this has a happier feell to it. I don't know if it's my broken gaydar or the fact that i watched to many british bands, but i didn't get gay vibes from him at all, his looks, the way he moves and sings is simply too british for me to go ahead and new he was gay. Anyway, probably there was no better time to be openly gay and successful on the mainstream USA charts than now

Why is his sexuality supposed to matter either way? Feel like I'm missing something here....

^ I also don't see how you can determine it in a music video, especially when he is surrounded by both sexes. But again, why does it matter?

It doesn't matter in terms of how good this is or whether it can smash or not. It does matter in terms of up through now, being "out" has been a hindrance to success much more often than not here in the States. Now that that isn't the case, it's nice to see more gay artists having success, don't you think? :)

Well, the UK didn't have that kind of problems in a long long time. I remember all the drama when Will Young came out, a lot of articles claiming it was the end of his (non existent back then) career. It was quite funny, first it was clear that Simon Cowell hated him because he didn't want to be his puppet and made him sing a lot of "girl how much i love you" songs in his first album (8 months after coming out). But in the end he had (and still has) a great career because he did well all that a talent show contestant need to do well, profiting on the popularity at first without going into a fight about how bad the first album is and make a good second album (showing you are way more than a karaoke singer). From all talent shows in UK he is probably the one with more staying power, and he even survived with decent sales to the fact of not receiving airplay.
Anyway, bands with gay singers are not that uncommon in UK, and bands with gay members are not uncommon in the USA indie scene either.
The big difference in recent years is that now a singer can be openly gay and have mainstream success, anyway in the USA the phenomenon is too recent (Sam Smith came out less than a year ago) to know if its a trend or a bunch of exceptions

I saw them last night in NYC and they were amazing! Surprisingly most of the sold out show sang to every word of their songs and when they closed with this song, "KING", the crowd went nuts. They are definitely poised to breakthrough in a huge way this year. I'm glad I got to see them before they move on to bigger venues.

I don't know about the other one. I guess it goes to show that many gays don't fit the stereotypes. Anyways I think this will be a Sam Smith situation where the gp aren't aware that they're gay so it won't really matter. Really hope this smashes and they follow it with desire or worship. I would love it if memo was released but I think it's too slow for radio.

Why is his sexuality supposed to matter either way? Feel like I'm missing something here.... It shouldn't matter , but in the past when some one is open about being gay in the US it often leads to them being dropped by radio , tv , everyone !. Adam Lambert . ???. Ricky Martin ??? .

They honestly have better. I don't think that this is better than 'Real' or 'Desire' or even 'Take Shelter', but it's still pretty fucking great.

The vocals are nothing special but that main melody is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I actually agree with this tbh. I don't think the vocals soar on this as much as the production does. That's not to say he is a bad vocalist, but it's something about the way it is sung. "Desire" is an example of him having outstanding vocals and solid production.

I tend to think of it like this... "Desire" is a much more raw, evocative song in terms of its lyrics than "King" is. "Desire" strikes its listeners at their core with what's in its song, while "King" doesn't quite accomplish this - at best, it hits more bluntly. Having said this, however, in the four, five months that I've heard and been listening to "Desire", not once has its melody ever stuck with me incessantly. It falls short of being the kind of song that sticks in your head and stays there for any length of time. "King", however, has stuck a few different times already, and it hasn't quite been even two whole months that I've been listening to it.
So...to use a Grammy classification of sorts, I would say that "Desire" makes the better song of the two, while "King" is proving to be the better record.

I still thinnk this is the best first single. The song is incredibly catchy, and if it becomes a hit (fingers crossed) it will be easier than the rest of songs became hits by itself.
I don't think they are even in a Ella Henderson or John Newman situation were it was all or nothing to the first single, because in their case they could be in a Man who can be moved/Breakeven situation. Anyway it will be better if King become a big hit. Hopefully they will be ready for a good promo in the USA

Adam Lambert came out right after AI, but his 1st album did well, he was popular and he had good promo, so I think too much is made of his sexuality in relation to his failure to date. It's far more about his music and label. Sam Smith is clearly out and is massive. King can't fail to make it, it's simply too good, and the voice is great and unique :0)

It's far more about his music and label. Sam Smith is clearly out and is massive. King can't fail to make it, it's simply too good, and the voice is great and unique :0) You are right, at least in part. Adam Lambert followed what's usual for AI male contestants, do well with the first album and bad with the second. The faliure of the second was his label fault. The guy was able to score a number one on BB200 but not even with that he got the support he needed. Anyway, the truth is after idol his radio success was way behind his popularity. Radio totally rejected For your entertainment as single (maybe too sexy for radio tastes), and even Whataya want from me looked more a hit than its 13 position at pop. Anyway, being gay was not the only thing that played against Adam, his looks and even performances were polarizing, and frankly both eras were really messed by the label. Nobody understood why Sleepwalker wasn't a single back in the day. And if i was behind his career when he released the first album, i would go a totally different route and release a ballad as first single (yes, ballads are more trendy now, but people loved his ballads on idol and they were a lot less polarizing). Anyway, if this time he has really the new label support i think his era will be successful, he is still very popular. Ricky Martin was a totally different case, his career on the english market was over way before his coming out. Ricky Martin was everywhere during a few years, he was probably the most popular male singer of that moment, but he ended burned. And of course, the fact that latin music was not that on fashion anymore has a lot to do with him focusing on his spanish career (he still has a successful career in the spanish market). I think Sam did really well for several factors, he has a big and very personal voice, and being sincere from the beginning and very down to earth in his interviews play in his favour. He tried to be as inclusive as he could with his songs, so it's quite easy that anyone can identify with them. The curious thing is a group like Years and years probably would face a lot of problems to break into the USA charts some years ago without having anything to do with their sexuality, because this sound not so much time ago could be qualified as too british. There were a lot of acts incredibly successful in UK during a lot of time that failed in their attempts to break in the USA market, but now radio seems way more receptive to different sounds and foreign singers

It climbed again on UK's chart to number 3. This is not only a number one there but it's going to be a really big hit (a lot of times UK peaks are misleading)
