I think #10 will be the peak for Somebody on the Hot 100...I was hoping it would do better than that but oh well 10 is better than I expected for a generic, reductive song like Somebody. But it's still fun.

ha. I love Somebody. play it way too much when i'm driving. never made the connection to 'I Wanna Dance W/ Somebody' until someone ask, 'doesn't it sound like the Whitney song'? That's after I'd heard it for at least 50 times.

I instantly drew the connection to IWDWS lol but they gave the credit so they should be ok unlike with the Blurred Lines case (even though BL sounded absolutely NOTHING like the Marvin Gaye song -____-).

I can't believe SYA still has a 2x lead over SUAD on iTunes and is probably going to pass it in AirPlay as well within a week. Ugh this is frustrating af!

Ugh this is frustrating af! the sales lead Wont last long enough for it to hit 10 weeks, I THINK. I don't think the airplay lead will be humongous. The major problem is SUAD streaming, it's a nonfactor.

I don't understand the hate towards UF at all...unless you passionately hated the 70s style funk music. And "Blank Space" overstayed its welcome IMO so it was about time for UF to make it. Still upset about TMTC being blocked :(

Are you serious? The first second I heard "Blurred Lines" I figured he sampled "Got To Give It Up" but, somehow made it sound more updated/current.

Maybe the beat is similar but in our day and age every beat has been used and whatever beat you make, chances are there are hundreds of other songs with a similar-sounding one.

MAJOR LAZER - Lean On f/MØ & DJ Snake: 4.211 (+ 0.105)
Why this is not doing better? Sounds like instant hit, no reason not to playlist it.

"Nothing" like the Gaye song? I think that's taking it too far. The first time I heard "BL" I immediately thought of Gaye's song. Didn't Pharrell even mention Gaye being an influence on the song? Even if you don't think they sound alike enough to merit a lawsuit, to say "nothing" alike is extreme.

Not lawsuit-worthy IMO. Obviously I have no say in the decision though especially since it has already been made.

OMG..how could one NOT hear it *instantly (um...basically the same production) lol. Every bit as beyond duh! like Ice Ice Baby ripping off Under Pressure. I mean there's def. 'similarities' (most recently Halo/Already Gone or Stay W/ Me vs Won't Back Down) then there's the EXACT same production! lol. I assumed..like forever that Robin/Pharrell actually gave Marvin Gave (or his estate some writing/production credit and permi$$ion)! Thought I saw it on Wikipedia or somewhere well before the lawsuit. Evidently they did not. lol. How on earth (unless it's pure arrogance/ nor caring and/or you're on drugs etc)...whenever one expects to NOT get caught when it's off the chart obvious? I actually feel really bad for Robin. Never saw someone so massive less than 2 yrs ago (still feels like months ago how massive he/that song was) to plummet off a cliff so hard/fast and is now forever scarred (career and personal life) from what happened w/ that song and his marriage :/ Forgot cause it's so ancient early 90s history whether or not Queen sued and if they did, if they won. Why am I thinking they didn't sue when they *easily could've wipped Vanilla Ice out if victorious! lol

I'm still rooting for SUAD even though there isn't really much hope for it at this point...that damn SYA will probably pass it in airplay too within a week :( I just hope SYA keeps falling in sales while SUAD keeps climbing...not likely though tbh. I'm still kind of salty that UF didn't get the record or even 15 weeks! lol. Just anything but another 14 weeks at #1, 19 yrs is just too long (esp. to not have a song at least tie it). Plus, the way UF lost it was sooo last minute and the worst possible timing (vs a month before when UF was still gaining). Def. woulda preferred if just one other song besides SYA was strong enough to at least knock it down to #3 a week or two after. Guess the only 'record' it could hope for is the biggest song of the decade or even century (so far). It prob. hasn't achieved the points yet but if it stays in the top 5/10 and top 40 x-amount of more weeks, don't be surprised if BB comes out w/ a random article declaring (based on overall points) even though it didn't break that damn 14 week at #1 tie, it's officially biggest song etc.. Just curious if anyone remembers the % lead UF had over Ed during all those weeks he was hot on his tail at #2. Trying to get a comparison of where SYA and UF were at in their 3/4 weeks at #1. Obviously an advantage SYA has is (so far) getting these BL and Happy massive radio updates which will only help maintain its sales. Granted, competition is week, but when a song still has around a 50% lead over the #2 and airplay (still a *huge factor in overall points) is still just taking off..into orbit, if there's no major competition (like UF didnt have any) what on earth could prevent SYA from not being in an UF like situation in a few months? Still dunno if SYA is fast burner/more hype than quality or if radio will prevent that from happening. Now, radio more than the movie will determine if SYA is a true mega smash (maintains good/great sales & streaming). The 'possible issue/difference' w/ UF vs SYA is I think it def. took a lot longer for UF to take off w/ sales but it already had healthy airplay so the airplay was there, *then the sales/streaming connected hard w/ the public. SYA has the polar opposite thing going on (sales first then airplay). Dunno which of the two is a better place to be lol. As I said in the Britney thread, after hearing Pretty Girls, I'm doubtful lightning is striking twice for Iggy w/ her having another song of the summer lol. Initially sales/streaming and even radio will be strong but I think ultimately it's not gonna be strong enough to topple SYAs overall points (esp in the next 2-4 weeks).

I don't understand the hate towards UF at all... I don't understand the hate towards SYA, either. It's not a terrible song, and it has yet to block anything officially (Uptown Funk blocked Sugar and TOL). The only reason to have anything wrong with SYA is because it blocked Uptown Funk from getting more than 14 weeks at #1, as if that wasn't enough as it is..

The only legit argument for one not wanting a song staying at #1 (whether it's for 2 or 18 weeks) is if you truly *don't like it. ANY song that spends several weeks at #1 is gonna cause a lot of the GP tire of it. But if it's a song you love (even if you're sick of hearing it) of course you're gonna want it to spend as many weeks as possible on top and esp break records etc...I'm not buying the whole well there needs to be more turnover etc...lol. Thats BS cause everyone has a fav. singer and/or song and know in their gut they'd LOVE to see it break records if they have this huge connection to it. Yes, your life would return to normal before u know whether or not they break it, but it's a great feeling in the moment to know it happened. It's every bit the same kind of thinking for people who root for a their fav. sports team to 'win/break records' except we're talking music, not sports.

Such a shame, it was looking like UF would surely beat the record. There was no competition in sight (EI, TQ, etc obviously would not dethrone it in time), and what's more frustrating is that it couldn't even break the tie for second place. There is still the possibility of course that it will be the #1 song of the decade as it will probably spend 25-30 weeks total in the top 10 and probably close to (if not more than) a year on the chart in total. I Gotta Feeling had the exact same kinda run (although with less weeks in top 10 since it exploded instantly whereas UF had a more gradual buildup) with 14 weeks at #1 and 56 weeks on the chart but it was unlucky to be released mid-2009 and and having its massive points split between two decades, otherwise it would be hefty competition for UF for decade-end #1. Plus, there's still 4.5 years for another song to blow up possibly even bigger than UF! As for Britney/Iggy I'm thinking that if it clicks well with the public it will debut top five with big sales and then when the video comes out the next week it might garner enough of a sales and streaming lead over SYA to topple it, given airplay buildup in its (PG's) first couple weeks. I can see PG doing very well in streaming since "Fancy" was a streaming monster and presumably Britney's videos from before the streami era did quite well in streaming as well. Tbh I'll take anything just to avoid SYA being at the top for a long time...

Why the HELL are people still whining about "Uptown Funk" falling from #1? This was almost a month ago. Let's let it go already! It's making this topic insufferable for about 90% of us.

Umm. I was with you until you said it's the same as following sports teams. I've cried over my team winning and losing before. lol. Never have cried over a chart performance. Been mad maybe, but nothing like loving a sports team. But I get what you're saying.
