I can definitely see a new era starting this spring/summer. I'd love a new song of the summer for Katy. Other than Adele, there's not really any other pop girls dominating right now. I know Gaga, Rihanna, and Britney all have new albums supposedly coming out this year. I'd love to see all four of them start their eras around the same time. Will make for some really fun times on the charts and here on Pulse. Would make up for an extremely boring 2015.

And there are more exciting releases this year. 2015 had some really strong singles but I have to agree. It was - musically- really boring.

2016 should have releases from Rihanna, Gaga, Beyoncé (who will also be partnering with Coldplay for an inevitably massive single), and Ariana with Miley's commercial comeback looking like a strong possibility. Britney is rumored, but I wouldn't make any hard bets on that one, and frankly it's not wise to consider her a "threat" to Katy right now. We've also got Drake and Kanye, but both are non-factors-- just another couple points to illustrate that 2016 is stacked.
Katy wouldn't get lost in the shuffle, though. I don't think anyone is scared of anyone else here; certainly not Katy Perry, who is all but primed for a reasonably successful era regardless of who releases what. She's not far behind Taylor when it comes to the biggest name in music right now.

Yea she will have Roar numbers going into this lead single, I think. Probably less, but certainly a hit right off the bat.

I wouldn't expect the same numbers like Roar due to the decrease in the digital market (similarly to how Shake It Off kicked off with a lower amount than We Are Never... despite arguably being launched with more hype), but a very very strong opening.
The other acts releasing aren't direct competition. Anyone trying to bring up Beyonce needs to remember that all 3 of their last eras overlapped and neither has cut into the other in any way aside from the one instance of DH holding of DIL on the Hot 100. How many Rihanna campaigns did Teenage Dream see through? She's also coming from a stronger recent period than Rihanna on CHR I'd say (2013 onwards). She's gone against Britney and in recent years has a far far stronger record. Ariana, Selena, and Ellie Goulding are the ones who'll still be going when she launches, but none of them are as big as names as Katy Perry right now. Even with them having gotten more hits in the past 2-3 years. Lady Gaga too, but again as with Rihanna, her recent streak is leaner than Katy's.
Soooo yeah she'll be launching at the same time as a lot of big names, but...is that any different from any other time? Bruno Mars will be strong competition for sure, but even with him Katy Perry is an A-list force who can more than hold her own.

Katy's lead single will get huge first week numbers regardless. The numbers will most likely be lower than Roar's but she is coming off of a massive Super Bowl performance. She will definitely draw in big numbers. I'm pretty sure her lead single will hit #1 on the Hot 100 since she is one of the biggest stars out there, plus every one of her lead singles as gone to #1.
I agree with everyone who says 2016 will be stacked with big releases. But I remember back to Q4 of 2013 when Katy, Gaga, Britney, Beyonce, Miley, and Lorde (who was a newcomer at the time) all had highly anticipated releases and all of the albums did anywhere from good to moderately well. Bruno and JT were also in the middle of huge eras at the time of all those releases, so it's definitely possible for multiple big names to have success at the same time. All of these artists should be able to maintain their place in pop music as long as the music they release is good.

Katy Perry & Ariana Grande hint at collaboration
which she later deleted, then Katy Perry tweeted shortly after:

If it's true, I can see it being a rehash of Bang Bang. I wonder if it would be for Ariana or Katy's album? Or maybe both?
Only other thing I can think of is one just listened to the other's song and they tweeted about it. Kinda weird how Ariana deleted her tweet but Katy didn't

2009-2013 proved that several A-listers can have big CHR success all at once. I don't think any of these artists should be worried.

Katy said in this interview that she does three year cycles. Does that mean she plans to release a new album every three years or that she focuses on one album for three years before starting work on the next one?
Here's the New York Times article:

The main station in my area played Dark Horse for the first time this morning, despite having it in one of the bumpers for nearly a year and overplaying everything before and including Roar. To make it worse, the DJ called it Dark House ._.

The only reason why I'm interested in her next era is that I want to see how she moves forward without Luke or if she stays with him and what the backlash around that would be. She needs to move on from him, but I wonder if she can.

I really hope she can move on from Dr Luke. Almost any producer will want to work with Katy, especially with her streak of successful singles. Plus she still has Max Martin to produce many of her tracks. If she sticks with Dr Luke, I can see a lot of backlash against her

If she's already done work with Luke, I can see them paying him under the table and leaving his name off the credits.

I agree, I think she has already recorded songs with Luke for her next album but I have a feeling she might scrap that and start over. There's been rumors for awhile that she was going to release new music this year but nothing has officially been said. Maybe they're pushing the album back to record new music?

Ditching Dr. Luke (if she has) might be the best thing for her next record. Prism was so stale imo. I'd love to see her work with other producers/writers and push herself musically this time around.

As long as she has a few Max Martin tracks, I'll be happy. I remember reading somewhere that Zedd wanted to do a song with Katy and I wouldn't mind her working with Duke Dumont again for a non-holiday song. She's been very quiet about her music lately. I wish we knew if she has been in the studio this year.

There were reports that she was in the studio with Luke early LAST year, and the only thing since then was her saying that her record was in the R&D phase early this year. I assume that if she did record stuff with Luke last year, it was for a re-release of PRISM that was scrapped in the end, and she and her team opted to just keep touring Internationally.

An X-mas album is the last thing she needs now. It's been over 2 years since her last major hit. She's still easily a big enough name that the correct first single will easily be massive regardless of competition, but she needs to record and release it. Save the holiday stuff for a few years down the line when she's launching her TV personality career and can plug it weekly.
