Was given the go ahead to do this so why not? :) I know there's a couple posters on here who, like me, are willing to explore outside of the mainstream country universe. Figured this thread could be a way to talk about those artists and share any albums/songs we think others would like. I really started getting into this type of music earlier this year and have discovered a ton of great new artists! Some of my favorite discoveries of the past year have been.... (in no order) Ryan Bingham The Lone Bellow Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors Allison Moorer Whitey Morgan Jamie Lin Wilson The Malpass Brothers (actually these guys are stone cold country, like serious throwbacks to the 60's) Gretchen Peters Houndmouth Sam Outlaw (corny name, great music) Brandi Carlile Banditos James McMurtry The Lone Bellow I notice a lot of people like Kacey Musgraves as well, and honestly her stuff isn't all that far removed from some of the above. Granted there's some weird ones that really take some time getting used to lol. Idk if this thread will be successful but I thought I'd at least give it a try and see how it fares. I'm really not good at starting new threads so if anyone has a better way to break the ice with this one go ahead :) Tagging people who might be interested: Andy Kanenrá:ke trebor Uncle Lumpy Devil Marlena Nylund

Very cool thread. The Alt-Country and Americana worlds are very vast and while I know a good deal, there's a lot I don't know as well, including lots of legendary and critically acclaimed stuff. This is probably the area of the country music that I know the least about, and would really like to become better-versed in. Anyway, I'll list my favorite artists and my favorite albums by them.
Buddy Miller (Cruel Moon) Chris Knight (The Jealous Kind) Emmylou Harris (Wrecking Ball) Gillian Welch (Time (The Revelator)) Guy Clark (Old No. 1) Hayes Carll (Trouble in Mind) Joe Ely (Honky-Tonk Masquerade) Jim Lauderdale (Planet of Love) Lucinda Williams (Car Wheels On a Gravel Road) Ray Wylie Hubbard (Dangerous Spirits) Robert Earl Keen (Gringo Honeymoon) Robbie Fulks (Let's Kill Saturday Night) Rodney Crowell (The Houston Kid) Todd Snider (East Nashville Skyline)
Arists I've Been Meaning to Investigate/Hear More Of (would appreciate recs): Bonnie 'Prince' Billy The Bottle Rockets Drive-By Truckers Fred Eaglesmith Gretchen Peters James McMurtry The Jayhawks Neko Case Old '97s Ryan Adams Son Volt Uncle Tupelo Whiskeytown Wilco

Based on how I have them labeled in my iTunes library, these are some of my favourites: Brandi Carlile Patty Griffin Kathleen Edwards Sarah Harmer I also love Lucinda Williams and Bonnie Raitt, although I'm not as familiar with most of their music. There's a lot of artists that fit more closely to the folk-genre that I love as well, but I'll leave them out of here since we have a folk forum already. Also, thanks for making this thread. The reason I suggested the Folk forum was because I feel like alt-country is closer to folk and indie than it is to country, at least most of the alt-country and americana I listen to, but I also realize that there's much more out there than what I like so the genre as a whole is probably closer to country than I realize, at least classic country, which today's country doesn't focus much on (and subsequently, probably the country forum as well)

zack97 Great thread! I am totally busy with tons of other stuff and there are tons of albums to listen to, but I will certainly contribute. FYI Have been given clearance (last year already) to post the official Bluegrass Charts here; so this will be coming up, too.

I'd like to add the following: Will Dailey: "National Throat" Rhiannon Giddens: "Tomorrow Is My Turn" / Have posted it here: pulsemusic.proboards.com/post/5289287/threadEmmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell: "The Traveling Kind". Started to listen to it; not yet finished. The title track is awesome. David Wayne Moore: "You Only Get What You Create". Only two titles deep in the album so far. Sounds promising, though. May I please also raise another item to be discussed: Will Dailey uses a distinct bluegrassy instrumentation which is more country than half of the fare on the country chart but is labelled as Pop/Rock, Adult Alternative, and Alternative/Indie Rock. Rhiannon Giddens is nightmarrish as Billboard charted her in Rock & Folk and airplay was shifted to Adult Alternative, the Official UK Chart Company lists her in the Country Charts, Allmusic takes the cake in describing it: Country / Blues / Folk / Pop-Rock / Piedmont Blues / Neo-Traditional Folk / Neo-Traditionalist Country / Bluegrass / Contemporary Country / Country Blues / Modern Acoustic Blues; I even came across the following definition: old-time music. #WTH! There are some terms that I'm hearing for the first time. How about having all the existing and scattered threads combined into one; Bluegrass, Texas, Southern, Americana, Roots, all non-mainstream Country, etc.? Because, quite frankly, the genres are interlacing and sometimes I can't really comprehend how the trades determine in which category they belong. The "dump" genre currently is Adult Alternative for the more commercial leaning ones and the rest goes unnoticed and uncharted by Billboard. Fellow posters were hinting at the creation of a True Country (or whatever) sub-genre and I'm starting to like this idea. What do you reckon to merge the various threads in the Country sub-forum to create a home for everything that is definitely not serviced to mainstream and the secondary country market? These are just my thoughts and sorry for this lengthy post. And thank you all for reading my posts and bearing with me, PS: Do check Rhiannon Giddens out! #ShamelessPromo

Surprised at the lack of Jason Isbell in this thread. He's great.
I also love Sturgill Simpson, Matt Woods (check out "Deadman's Blues", it is a god damn masterpiece), Drive-By Truckers, Brandy Clark (if she counts) and the bit I've heard from Jason Eady.
I want to get into Brandi Carlile but something about her doesn't quite click with me the way these other acts do.

Surprised at the lack of Jason Isbell in this thread. He's great. The thread is pretty new so I guess that we are still collecting our thoughts... Jason Isbell: "24 Frames" is already in my buzz section; and I was about to showcase him in the song of the day thread by the end of next week. It's a brilliant song with a great storyline! :)

The Drive-By Truckers are very high on my list of artists to check out. I understand Southern Rock Opera is considered by many to be a modern-day masterpiece, in any genre. Jason Isbell is great, I don't know how I forgot to mention him. It took me a little while to warm up to him (as his style is more "alt"-y than straight country), but now I'm a huge fan. Have all four of his studio albums, looking forward to the fifth. How about having all the existing and scattered threads combined into one; Bluegrass, Texas, Southern, Americana, Roots, all non-mainstream Country, etc.? Because, quite frankly, the genres are interlacing and sometimes I can't really comprehend how the trades determine in which category they belong. I agree that makes sense.

I have this on my desk: Wink Burcham: "Cowboy Heroes And Old Folk Songs" (2015) Apparently, this album is a compilation of this two previous sets. Very rooted sound, some amazing instrument play, including great slides; love his voice. I'm hooked on the second track: "Liquor Store (Band Version)". Have not yet finished to hear the rest; will post an entry in the "what you are listening thread" sometime soon.

Also for anybody who likes the alt-country stuff should check out Kathleen Edwards' first two albums ' Failure' and ' Back To Me'. They are among my favorite albums from the last decade and must listens imo. Her other albums are good too but those first two are much more friendly for country listeners. I'm posting one of her videos cause I can! And I don't know if you'll like it but I'd love to know what you think of it .indulgecountry :) Other artists I like that fit into Americana/AltCountry (some I'd consider country but have seen them called alt) Amanda Shaw Angaleena Presley BR5-49 Brandi Carlile Brandy Clark Brooke Ludwick Bruce Robison Buddy & Julie Miller Caitlin Rose Carolina Chocolate Drops Catherine Britt (Later albums) Charlie Robison Chris King Chris Knight Chris Stapleton Chris Thile The Civil Wars Cody Canada & The Departed Corb Lund Court Yard Hounds? ^Holy cow that song was great. Will be getting into Kathleen Edwards ASAP.
I love Kasey Chamber's Rattling Bones album with Shane Nicholson, but haven't gotten a chance to listen to her solo stuff yet. What album should I start with?

Shovels & Rope is another one I really love, can't believe I forgot them in my original post.
Also, The Civil Wars are FANTASTIC. Took me a bit to get into them, but I absolutely adore that duo now.

Failer is one of my favourite albums period. It's an essential for any alt-country fan for sure. I enjoy all her others (and met her once too!) but Failer is just fantastic. Here's the video for her first single Six O'Clock News that, for some reason at the time, just blew my mind. Her last album, Voyageur is slightly less alt-country but also a great album (probably my second fav from her). It's basically a breakup album as it was mainly about her divorce and has a few hard-hitting lyrics on there. House Full Of Empty Rooms in particular. Here's the video for the fantastic single Change The Sheets: Also agreed on Lindi Ortega. She has a new album out next month. Kanenrá:ke Speaking of Sarah Harmer, she is playing a free show in rural Nova Scotia next weekend that I hope to be going to. I hope she has an update on a long overdue new album. For anyone who knows or doesn't know her, Lodestar is one of my favourite songs period. Definitely worth a listen. I'll post that here too:

Yay I knew that song would hook somebody! I think you'd like the ' Back To Me' album the best but really can't go wrong from Kathleen. As for Kacey it's also hard because her albums are all different from each other and I always felt like they have their own unique identity. My favorite is ' Wayward Angel' but I'd say start with her debut ' The Captain' it's a good introduction to her and it's probably her most traditional country, then you can start exploring her other work. :) My rankings of her albums though if it helps. 01. 'Wayward Angel'02. 'Rattlin' Bones'03. 'The Captain'04. 'Wreck & Ruin'05. 'Bittersweet'06. 'Barricades & Brickwalls'07. ' Little Bird' 08. ' Carnival' Kathleen's albums 01. 'Failer'02. ' Asking For Flowers'03. ' Back To Me'04. 'Voyageur'Devil Marlena Nylund I'm very happy that somebody else on here knows and loves Kathleen btw, she's not somebody I hear mentioned all that often. :) I'm jealous you'll get to see Sarah, she came near by one time and I wanted to go but had something I couldn't get out of. :( Kathleen I did get to see though once and I loved her show, one of my very favorite shows, did not get to meet her though lol As for Lindi, I love the 3 albums I have from her, and have been looking for her earlier stuff but no luck. I'm very excited for the new album but I'm hoping I like it better than ' Tin Star' I found it a little weaker than the previous albums. Anybody like Tift Merritt? :)

I liked a lot of the artists you mentioned but these two really caught my eye. The Greencards Weather and Water album is amazing. Just stellar modern bluegrass music. Their most recent album is great too. Corb Lund should be way more famous than he is. I understand most of his music is more acoustic driven and organic than what is popular on Canadian country radio, but he is seriously one of the most talented musicians in North America.

Curious what everybody thinks - would you guys prefer for separate threads for non-mainstream stuff, or would you prefer if I merged it all into this one thread? It would include alt-country, Americana, Texas/red dirt country, and we could even include Canadian singles/albums and other international country releases here. Basically, anything that's not "mainstream" and being marketed to US country radio.

I'm for: - merging all non-mainstream threads including the discover new artist thread - creating a new thread for Canada & The World. Great idea; I always felt kind of bad when posting Canada related stuff in the main section On a personal note: In "The Lounge" there's a "What's Your Song Of The Day" thread. Basically, I'm the only feeding it. Can my posts be moved to a new thread in here? And/Or can we create a new thread like country song discovery/video showcase of the day, etc. ?

This album is fantastic! Thanks to those who recommended it to me. After three listens, I have found this to be an excellent record from an artist with a ton of talent. Every song is a gem. There are very few debut albums I have heard that have better songwriting than this. I am officially a Kathleen Edwards fan, and will likely be listening to Back to Me soon.
