So it looks like barring something crazy, 1989 will be back at number 1 for the first time since February. What's the last time a Billboard 200 #1 has returned to the spot after so long? Babel was away between October and March, 21 was away between March and June, and both of those ranges are shorter than February to August. So it looks like it'd have to be before 2011... Wasn't there a rule prohibiting catalog albums from hitting #1 until fairly recently?

An album released less than a year a go that has never left the chart definitely isn't "catalog"

Oh definitely, I worded that poorly. I meant to include a part where the death of an artist would drive great album sales, but under old rules that couldn't re-chart on the Billboard 200. I didn't actually write that, though. :)

Seems weird to me that they were able to issue an estimate on Descendants, given that the movie didn't even premiere until Friday night (which was obviously going to be the main source of sales interest).
Meanwhile, they didn't have good opening day data on the Zeppelin or Lil Dicky releases.

I hope the Disney Descendants soundtrack debuts at #1. I think it will sell more than this estimation.
It's currently #1 on amazon and #2 on iTunes (and the current #1 is a pre-order album).
Plus, all the songs from the soundtrack are still climbing on iTunes. Rotten to the Core is at #20!!!

This is hella boring week. Who cares? This whole Friday switcheroo has messed everything up. I doubt HITS is thrilled with working on a Saturday so we are getting half-assed estimates. Same with Billboard...

Viewship of the movie was 6.6 million on Friday. I'm sure there are several more scheduled showings this week, so that's reaching a lot of pre-teens who will hound their parents into submission.

Holy crap, I just realized unless Descendants could pull over 40k, we will see the lowest selling #1 ever

The chart is not a pretty sight this week, as sales for the #1 album hit a record low. Disney’s The Descendants TV-movie ST will debut at #1 with about 30k—although it’s comforting to see Led Zeppelin in the #2-4 slots. That’s 10k less than the previous record holder, Amos Lee, whose 2011 release Mission Bell debuted on top with 40.5k. The SPS chart doesn’t look any better with Taylor Swift and Future battling it out for relative supremacy. Both are on track for about 40k, with Swift having a very slight lead. This will also mark the lowest SPS total to date—by nearly 20k--and quite possibly could be under the previous sales-only low. Here’s how the Top 15 looks at midweek. Due to limited info this week, please expect a greater than usual margin of error. * The Descendants (Walt Disney) 28-33k sales, 30-35k SPS * Led Zeppelin, Presence (Rhino) 22-25k, 23-26k * Led Zeppelin, Coda (Rhino) 22-25k, 23-26k * Led Zeppelin, In Through the Out Door (Rhino) 22-25k, 23-26k * Lil Dicky (CMSN) 21-24k, 23-26k Jill Scott (Blues Babe) 21-24k, 23-26k Future (Epic) 18-21k, 37-42k Taylor Swift (Big Machine/BMLG) 17-20k, 37-42k Tyrese (Voltron) 14-17k, 16-19k * Saint Asonia (RCA) 14-17k, 15-18k * Migos (Quality Control) 12-14k, 14-16k Ed Sheeran (Asylum U.K.) 12-14k, 28-32k Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 11-13k, 12-14k Alan Jackson (Capitol Nashville) 11-13k, 12-14k Sam Hunt (MCA Nashville) 10-12k, 24-27k * Debuts( HDD)

"Rotten to the Core" has been Top 40 since the movie came out. It, alone, is going to sell upwards of 30K this week. That's a 3K minimum contribution to sales plus streaming.
With *all* of the tracks included, we should be looking at 6-10K in extra consumption (and, thus, a contender for #1 on the BB200). No clue where Hits is getting 2K from.
Can someone please give HDD a link to Kworb? They made the same type of mistake with Bea Miller's album.

I think they're underestimating the streaming of Descendants.
"Rotten To The Core" has more than 7 million views on youtube. And all the other songs from the soundtrack have more than one million each. More than 15 million views in total!

And all the other songs from the soundtrack have more than one million each. More than 15 million views in total! Unless something changed very recently, YouTube streaming doesn't count toward the Billboard 200. Taylor Swift's "1989," for instance, received zero SEA prior to launching on Apple Music. But Hits is definitely underestimating track sales. The top few tracks should themselves generate 6K in TEA.

I didn't watch Descendants, but it would be nice if it got close to Amos Lee's tally- no <30,000 for No. 1, please.

Evil Like Me is the only tolerable song on Descendants. The music from the movie is objectively awful.

The old sales record is going to be blown to bits. Probably going to sink further in the near future.
We are in a singles-driven streaming market, where no big name artists are releasing new albums. Not a good market for album sales.
Although it is kind of fun seeing 3 decades-old Led Zeppelin albums in the top 5, they are there because nothing else is out there. Don't release anything and people won't buy anything.

Great. 3 more Led Zeppelin albums. More wasted space that could be occupied by other albums.

Those 3 albums are new to many who might own LZ III or IV.. I'm not surprised they are so popular this week. They might have reached top 10 on almost any week so it's not that exceptional. But with the help of those albums, the top 10 level is pretty ok in units.

Right now is an awful time for releases. Nobody is putting anything out at the moment. I feel like anymore the only time sales will be OK is Q1 when new artists will release their albums and Q4 when established artists will. The other 6 months of the year are just the middle of the pack crowd that will rarely set the world on fire. 1 Direction is going to sell about as many TEA/SEA units of their lead single this week as the #1 album is going to sell in raw sales. The market is totally singles driven now, which is why I think in the coming years album promo is going to change drastically. The days of a lead single followed by album release 2-3 months later are going to end.

Guess Hits found Kworb. It has "Descendants" winning with 31K in pure sales and 46K in SPS.
