hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=297079NUMBERS WITH ALTITUDE: DRE'S COMPTON BLOWS UP IN PREORDERCompton is coming on strong. Just two days after Dr. Dre announced the existence of his inspired by-soundtrack to the wildly buzzing N.W.A biopic, Straight Outta Compton (due 8/14), the star-studded Aftermath/Interscope set, Compton, A Soundtrack, is making mad stacks in preorder ahead of its 8/7 release. Preliminary numbers suggest a 300k first week or bigger, and that's a week before the movie hits 3k screens and becomes a massive topic of pop-cultural conversation. Do we need to remind you about a little ditty from 1988 called "**** tha Police," and how much it resonates in the moment? Not to mention the backstory of how a tech gazillionaire/revered producer and his bandmate, the current star of top-grossing family comedies, once terrified the establishment? How big will this one get? Will it become a juggernaut akin to Taylor Swift's 1989 and help the biz make its year? Will it have radio hits? Our crystal balls are currently deflated, but we know this thing is big—and we look forward to finding out just how big. Dre made his announcement Saturday on The Pharmacy, his widely acclaimed show on Apple's Beats 1 radio; the album is said to be an exclusive on Apple, though that has not been officially confirmed. Compton reunites Dre with N.W.A colleague Ice Cube as well as Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar and Xzibit, among others.

I have zero interest towards the album but brilliant opening! This is the week Luke Bryan is releasing, right?

Finally a #1 album for Dr.Dre. Both The Chronic and 2001 - two of the biggest hip-hop albums in history - stalled at #2. However, they both had incredible longevity.

Dre could get it with the "Straight Outta Compton" movie coinciding with the album.

Oh dear if Dre doesn't go #1 with 350k in AUGUST, how badly can an artist even deal with the schedule lol

I think Dre will be fine. Even if he doesn't get it the first week, he has a solid shot next week with all the goodwill and free promo that are sure to come with the new NWA movie.

I think Dr. Dre will sell relatively a bit more physical albums than Drake though because old people.

It would be a bit tragic, and somewhat hilarious, if Dr.Dre yet AGAIN missed out on a #1 album. Still no #1 album for one of the biggest legends in music.

TEA & SEA are very strong for Luke Bryan.. and he's returning after a 2xP album. I don't see how he could lose the #1 spot if Dre is an Apple-only release for the first week.
That said I've been wrong many many times lol

www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/dr-dre-new-album-compton-apple_55c21e73e4b0d9b28f04eab6?kvcommref=mostpopularDr. Dre’s New Album Is Exclusive To Apple, And That’s A ProblemThe streaming music industry may be changing in a big way. By Damon Beres, Tech Editor, The Huffington Post A landmark album is dropping Friday -- but you'll need Apple Music or iTunes to listen to it. USA Today reported earlier this week that Dr. Dre's first album in 15 years, "Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre," will be available to purchase only on the tech giant's new streaming service, though an Apple spokeswoman told The Huffington Post on Wednesday that the album will also be for sale via iTunes. The exclusivity on Apple platforms will last for the foreseeable future. Exclusivity makes total sense: Dr. Dre is one of the founders of Beats, the music technology company that Apple acquired last year for $3 billion. Dre also has his own show on Apple Music's Beats 1 radio. But, logic aside, most music consumers should be wary of the move. It arguably represents a shift in the industry which could fracture audiences and force individuals to subscribe to multiple products if they want access to all of their favorite music. Here's the problem: As it stands, Apple Music is one of many music streaming services offering very similar functionality to users. If you want to stream music, you can get Spotify, Tidal or Apple Music for $9.99 a month and basically rest assured that you're not missing out on a particular artist or album by choosing one over another. At least, that was historically the case. Recently, Apple Music has started to land some pretty major exclusives. Taylor Swift brought her album "1989" to Apple Music after deciding that this particular corporate enterprise was more to her liking than alternate corporate enterprises. And now, Apple Music has locked down Dr. Dre. It brings to mind a recent HuffPost interview with Stephen Witt, the author of How Music Got Free. Here's what he told us back in June: This entire industry has copycat economics. For $9.99 a month, you get the same quality access to the same 30 million songs that they all have. The only differences between them are cosmetic for now. That could change if they start going for artist exclusives or offering different services... [These services could] start bidding against each other for exclusives with musicians. That would be bad too because it makes each service worth less while spending more. You might subscribe to Spotify or Apple Music, but you don't want to subscribe to both. And you might have to if the media starts to fragment into different channels. In complete fairness to Apple, they're just playing a game that others have joined in on, too. It makes basic economic sense: If you crave a burger, you can go to McDonald's or you can go to Burger King. The products are similar, but they're not exactly the same. Ultimately, flavor or value help you decide which you actually want to spend your money on. We've become used to living in a world where 10 bucks a month means whatever music we want, whenever we want. But we're starting to see that we may not want to get too comfortable there.

People acting like 300 are mind blowing numbers? lol The album is the most anticipated in music. Should have done 500k+ but of course it didn't have a proper single and people don't know what to expect yet. I think it will trend up - buzz online right now seems very positive. And with the movie being released, probably huge.

Or they are like I am... what's the point in releasing a rushed soundtrack inspired by an ancient album when it has taken 15 years to make a completely new smash

"Compton" is top notch quality, but like Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp A Butterfly" it is an album-experience, not a collection of hits. Infact, you'd be hard pressed to find any commercial hits on Compton. It will have to sell on publicity and word-of-mouth alone. Radio airplay will be minimal.

Yea... and people are even arguing whether it's Dre's solo album or not. Isn't that always the case with him? lol I don't think anyone considers him to be one of the best rappers of all-time. He is one of the best producers of all time and has done a lot for the industry to allow him to be respected, but I don't think it comes from strictly being a rapper (obviously). The album seems a bit more soft than I had expected. On iTunes, only 2 tracks are represented. #66 is Medicine Man which is obvious because it features Eminem - which just continues to show the incredible strength that Eminem has regardless of what he puts out (this song is however incredible and many calling it a return to form from Eminem) The next track is at #100 which is Talk About It. Which is surprising because it isn't a track featuring Snoop Dogg or even Kendrick Lamar. Interesting. I'm guessing though that a bunch of the album tracks are all right outside the top 100. Didn't check though.
