KAYTRANADA & VanJess - DYSFUNCTIONAL (lyhom, #2) vs. Kaiser Chiefs - Record Collection (Local Native, #7)...i'd vote Dysfunctional in most any matchup, in fact i'm gonna start charting it...but Record Collection is my song of the Summer (if not the whole damn year!)
Jay Som - Superbike (peacebone, #2) vs. Vampire Weekend - This Life (Daryl, #7)...very close...another pair of really good songs (if not as great as those in the matchup above) This Life, despite being 2nd tier VW, wins by a hair
Twin XL - Good (bangwave, #2) vs. PUP - Free at Last (willapted33, #7)...my #2 seed & my #2 song of the week...PUP isnt my thing but i still dont dislike it...actually the longer i listen the more i like it...just not quite enough
Dirty Honey - When I'm Gone (dr.indie, #2) vs. Bracket - Canned from the Food Drive (American Idiot, #7)...Doc finds the trasiest songs but dnn if this isnt catchy as gonorrhea (to complete the analogy)...i feel very guilty about this pick, but here i go
Foals - White Onions (MoD, #2) vs. Tim Hecker - That World (shazam, #7)...i really like this Foals album but "That World" pack much more emotional impact
Boston Marriage – Man Who Wasn’t There (wheatsquares33, #2) vs. Róisín Murphy - Incapable (Red, #7)...MWWT surprised me in how good it sounds, meanwhile Incapable, although stylistic more my thing, seemed a bit monotonous (& not in a cool trance kinda way)
Skyward Pines - Waste (Lordeftones, #2) vs. San Cisco - When I Dream (Beno, #7)...SP shows great potential once the production get cleaned up (really like the intro), but i've always been a sucker for this Australian band...this one sounds a bit like they've been influenced by Real Estate (another plus)
IDKHOW - Choke (janinho, #2) vs. Crows - Chain of Being (peacebone, #7)...Chain Of Being started great, but then...i kept waiting...but it didn't really change much at all & what sounded fresh initially sounded stale halfway thru...Choke, otoh, is very fun all the way thru

ROCK TOURNAMENT: SUMMERTIME MADNESS 2019 I'm going to post this one minute earlier than the actual deadline time. I doubt anything would have happened in those sixty seconds. :kii:ROUND 1, SET 4: #2s VS. #7s, PART TWO (RESULTS)
KAYTRANADA & VanJess - DYSFUNCTIONAL (lyhom, #2) (7) vs. Kaiser Chiefs - Record Collection (Local Native, #7) (8) -- One of the closest matchups of the set sees James get another song into the next round. You better not be getting cocky over there.
Jay Som - Superbike (peacebone, #2) (11) vs. Vampire Weekend - This Life (Daryl, #7) (4) -- Easily the biggest shocker of the set, perhaps not in the end result, but in how one-sided the matchup was. Jay Som moves on with shocking ease.
Twin XL - Good (bangwave, #2) (2) vs. PUP - Free at Last (willapted33, #7) (13) -- Comparatively, the extent of these next two blowouts is less surprising. First, PUP advances with little difficulty.
Dirty Honey - When I'm Gone (dr.indie, #2) (3) vs. Bracket - Canned from the Food Drive (American Idiot, #7) (12) -- Following that matchup is another big blowout, as the RoTo personal favorite (because of the band name...get it? "Bracket"?...yeah, I'll stop now) moves on.
Foals - White Onions (MoD, #2) (7) vs. Tim Hecker - That World (shazam, #7) (8) -- I did not expect this matchup to be so close, nor did I expect this matchup to end up in Tim Hecker's favor. What a world we live in.
Boston Marriage – Man Who Wasn’t There (wheatsquares33, #2) (14) vs. Róisín Murphy - Incapable (Red, #7) (1) -- ...perhaps I should have included the edited version in the Spotify playlist. Outside of the margin, I can't complain too much about the song that won. It's deserving. (Sadly, I do not see this being the last time one of my songs gets demolished like this.)
Skyward Pines - Waste (Lordeftones, #2) (11) vs. San Cisco - When I Dream (Beno, #7) (4) -- Every Skyward Pines song advances to the next round. How about that?
IDKHOW - Choke (janinho, #2) (5) vs. Crows - Chain of Being (peacebone, #7) (10) -- Not only does peace get both of his songs into the next round, both of his songs in this round won by a decent amount.
A reminder that the first round will have three day deadlines (though two of the sets have already went past the three day mark...whoops), while every subsequent round will have two day deadlines. The deadline day for voting is Tuesday, July 23rd. The deadline time will be the same in every round: 8pm US Eastern, which should be around the time that I post every new set.
If you did not submit, you are still allowed to vote! The voting process is not exclusive to those who submitted songs, hence why posters who didn't submit this time are still being tagged. If you wish to be removed from the tag list, though, I will do so without further questions.
ROUND 1, SET #5: #3s vs #6s, PART ONE Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6) Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6) Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6) The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6) Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6) Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6) Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6)

Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) {5.4} vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6) {6}
Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) {4.5} vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6) {6.6} Well this is not the matchup to turn to for great vocals lol. I was really taken aback by that X-Ray Spex sample in Big Mouth, though--pretty cool!
Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) {7} vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6) {8.2} :(
The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) {7.5} vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6) {8.3}
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) {6.8} vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6) {6.2}
Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) {6.5} vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) {6.4}
Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) {6.3} vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) {7.5}
Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) {7} vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6) {6}
Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) {8.3} vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6) {8.3} These two being put together in the first round is appalling. Going to stick my vote on the song I think will lose for the moment, but if the tide turns the other way I have no issue with switching.

Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) (strong 6) vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6) (light 6) Had the whistles been taken out of "Hard To Kill" I would've liked it a lot more. Unfortunately, I've never really cared for Slipknot that much and this, while decent, didn't really do much to change my mind.
Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) (decent 6) vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6) (strong 7)
Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) (strong 7) vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6) (strong 7)
The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) (strong 7) vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6) (decent 8) The lyrics to "Tricks" are f**king brilliant lmao
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) (decent 9) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6) (light 7) I've grown to enjoy "Ayahuasca" more than my top 2 seeds, it's nearly a perfect song to me tbh
Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) (strong 8) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) (decent 7) "Groceries" will almost certainly be my #1 in the alt rankdown if it somehow makes it there
Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) (light 7) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) (decent 7)
Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) (light 7) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6) (strong 7)
Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) (decent 7) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6) (decent 7)

Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6) Active needs to play more of Unsainted and less of songs such as No More and Welcome Home.
Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6) Lover, Leaver is the best of the three GVF LP singles but is still not as interesting as Big Mouth.
Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6) BitBL was such a blast of energy, I love it.
The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6) Both were great
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6) Another interesting pair of songs
Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) gb/ol h/nf was a great first listen, but Groceries is one of the best MB Alt extras of the year thus far.
Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) Alligator to win this tournament? It's opponent was great, as well.
Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6) I like both of these, but I'm giving Turn the Light the edge here.
Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6) We end off with another tough match with two more great first listens.

Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) (decent to strong 7) vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6) (strong 7 to light 8) Hard to Kill was a good first listen, but I really like Unsainted.
Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) (decent to strong 4) vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6) (decent to strong 6) GVF only get more intolerable the longer they stick around (though I do like this a bit more than You're the One). Vocals weren't really to my taste on Big Mouth, but song still had a nice energy.
Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) (strong 7 to light 8) vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6) (decent to strong 5) Kyoto was a very nice first listen, that synth line is very Radiohead-y. Wasn't a big fan of the Fontaines DC song, the vocals aren't doing it for me.
The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) (decent to strong 7) vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6) (light to decent 6) Haven't heard Bright Light Social Hour go this uh heavy before, but I like it. It's no Infinite Cities though. And apparently this is the "wheatsquares complains about vocals round", because that's the biggest drawbacks on Tricks too.
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) (decent to strong 7) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6) (decent to strong 7) Well these were both pretty pleasant surprises! About 3 minutes in to the VSC song I was like ugh more indie guy voice and there's another 5 and a half minutes left, why. But then like, it turned into this really beautiful song? I really loved the last 5 minutes of this actually, I'm sure if I were to revisit this song knowing what to expect I'd like it even more. Frontier was super glitchy and weird, thought it was just a novelty at first, but once it picked up it turned into a pretty solid banger. Gonna give it to the first one, but both were good first listens.
Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) (strong 7 to light 8) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) (decent to strong 7) Well listen Groceries is a fuckin banger, like easily the catchiest charting indie pop song of the year so it's tough competition. But the Oso Oso song was a pretty great first listen, I'll chart it.
Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) (decent to strong 7) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) (strong 8 to light 9) I quite liked Cull Your Heart, sounds like some of that radio pop punk/post-grunge of the early 2000s, your Story of the Years and so on. But like, Alligator is going to win this tournament (well, if coming in 4th behind 3 Weyes Blood songs counts as winning) and I'm fine with that. OMAM really outdid themselves with this one.
Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) (strong 6 to light 7) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6) (decent to strong 5) Turn the Light was okay. Kind of unremarkable but not unlikable. I do not care for Missed Connection much at all.
Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) (strong 7 to light 8) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6) (light to decent 8) Awwwwww man what's this about??? Agreeing with Beno's sentiment here, neither of these needs to leave in the first round. Now, I've dug Plague Vendor for awhile, I really liked Jezebel and Credentials from their 2016 album, but this is the first song from their upcoming one to really stick with me. Was expecting to give it the vote, but this Drab Majesty song is really great! I loved it. I'm gonna give it the vote, but it's really close.
This was a very good round for first listens. Best songs I discovered this round were Ellipsis, New Comedown, Kyoto, Ayahuasca, Cull Your Heart, gb/ol h/nf, Frontier, Give to Me Words, and Hard to Kill, in that order

Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6)...does anyone else hear a bit of LaRoux's "Bulletproof" in this? this is one of my favorites this month
Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6)...close but the X-Ray Spex sample breaks the tie for me
Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) {7} vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6)...actually i DO LIKE the vocals on BitBL but Kyoto just barely edges it out in overall quality
The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6)...Tricks is memorable, can't say the same for GTMW
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6)...another close one (i know that's hardly worth typing anymore)
Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6)...i really didn't like Groceries on my 1st listen a few weeks back, but this time it clicks w/ me
Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6)...i'm not sure if OM&M can ever best this awesome song
Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6)...I want to vote for both, can't you swap my song out for something else here? :/
Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6)...both of these are quite interesting

ROUND 1, SET #5: #3s vs #6s, PART ONE
Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6) Damn. I like both of these songs and the music videos too. I guess I'll go for the Metal vibe, but also because "Unsainted" has gone top 10 on my Metal chart while "Hard To Kill" it s still making its way up my weekly chart.
Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6) This vote is a bit more easy for me. Not because its my song, but because its Greta Van Fleet hard Rock heaven. "Big Mouth" is pretty cool. Like a harsher Paramore.
Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6) "Kyoto" isn't for me. The female vocals were nice but the song wasn't taking me anywhere. That FOUNTAINS D.C. song reminded a bit of U2's "Desire". I wish the vocals delivery had been better, but the music was topps.
The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6) I was putting up my guard for that intro to "Give To Me Words" . Glad it turned out to be something else. "Tricks" reminded me of Julieta Venegas music. All she needed was the accordion. Believe it or not, that vibe is the reason I chose it.
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6) Folky heaven has it fans but not for me. "Choosing "Frontier" but just barely.
Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) Both songs are melodic and have good vocals. For some strange reason Oso Oso gave me early Atlas Genius vibes.
Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) "Cull Your Heart" was a worthy opponent , but "Alligator" has settled in my archives as one of my favorite Alternative songs of the year.
Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6) I thought Danger Mouse was known for a bunch of noize? Glad this song was anything but Noize. I actually enjoyed that vibe. Missed Connection is the closest I've come to liking a Head and The Heart song. Not bad and I like the lalalala's too.
Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6) Both of these had cool percusion. "New Connection" also has some AFI vibes. Now "Ellipsis" has that 80's New Wave sound I love. A lot like El Ultimo Vecino. I'm download checking this one right this second..

The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6)
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6)
Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) Honestly, I could have gone either way here as these are both good songs, but I figured since "Groceries" is winning at the moment to give Oso Oso some love.
Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) Is it legal to vote against your own song? I love Nightmarathons new album, but "Alligator" is likely going to be in my Top 3 in the 2019 Alt YE Rankdown.
Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6)
Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6)

Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) [7.5] vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6) [6.0] If you told me ten years ago I would vote a whistling song over Slipknot I'd say you were crazy. Great first listen wins over run of the mill 'Knot
Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) [8.0] vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6) [4.5] How can anyone say GVF have bad vocals? That kid kills it! Big Mouth on the other hand had atrocious vocals and that took it down for me.
Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) [8.2] vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6) [5.8] I knew Kyoto was a pbone pick immediately. One of the best discoveries of the tournament for me. Fontaines gave me some good old school punk vibes, but didn't really do a lot for me.
The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) [9.0] vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6) Absolutely love the bass in this BLSH song. It hits hard and doesn't stop stomping but still has that dreamy atmosphere that I love from these guys. Also love their lyricism, to say nothing of Stella's own on-the-nose lyrics.
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6) Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6) Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6)

Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6) (nice beat and bass on the Bleached song, but even though I prefer "All Out Life", "Unsainted" is still really solid...and solid enough)
Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6) (I think I'm just kind of over the idea of Greta Van Fleet...this is one of the better songs I've heard from them, but I grew tired of their act quickly; there's a lot of energy in the Petrol Girls track, and I think this is a refreshing change of pace, even if I could see the vocals being hard to take at times)
Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6) (all I'll say is that I struggled mightly with this matchup and didn't want to vote against one of these songs)
The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6) (see the above matchup, but just switch the songs...the randomizer did not make things easy here at all)
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6) ("Ayahuasca" is a journey...I almost took the song for granted until I really listened to the lyrics, and DAMN, this is a song worth checking out...both graceful and harrowing; in comparison, "Frontier" is wild, and while I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's "unique", it's certainly interesting...this is now the third matchup in a row that I wish these two songs were not being pitted against one another)
Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) (I'll just go on ahead and admit it right now: I don't really care for "Groceries" that much...is it one of the better songs to chart on Alt lately? Sure, I suppose...but that doesn't mean THAT much; it doesn't help "Groceries" that "gb/ ol h/nf" was a nice discovery)
Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) (oh, I like "Cull Your Heart"...kind of hate that my songs keep going up against good discoveries)
Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6) ("Turn the Light" kind of reminds me a bit of "The Ghost Inside" at times, which doesn't surprise me at all, given who half of the duo is...I don't think this is as good as "The Ghost Inside", but it has its charms; I don't think I've ever really gotten the appeal of The Head and the Heart, and "Missed Connection" is not convincing me to change my mind...it's okay, and it might be their best charter so far, but I can't say I'd revisit it willingly)
Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6) (wasn't as wowed by "New Comedown" as I hoped to be...good, but not great; "Ellipsis", though...oh yes, that's the good stuff, a really solid 80's flashback)

ROCK TOURNAMENT: SUMMERTIME MADNESS 2019 NOTE: This is being posted a little late, but a) lyhom informed me that he would post his votes and b) I was busy taking care of a few Active RD-related things.ROUND 1, SET 5: #3s VS. #6s, PART ONE (RESULTS)
Bleached - Hard to Kill (BlurryFaceKyle, #3) (7) vs. Slipknot - Unsainted (janinho, #6) (5) -- Bleached also had Lord's vote, so lyhom's vote for Bleached was basically an added stomp to the stomach...but maybe it was a hard one!
Greta Van Fleet - Lover, Leaver (dr.indie, #3) (2) vs. Petrol Girls - Big Mouth (American Idiot, #6) (10) -- I wish I could say that it was a good attempt from Greta Van Fleet...but it really wasn't. Petrol Girls make it look easy.
Haelos - Kyoto (peacebone, #3) (6) vs. FONTAINES D.C. - Boys in the Better Land (disassociative, #6) (6) -- Lord edited his post...and the result changes.
The Bright Light Social Hour - Give to Me Words (Lordeftones, #3) (4) vs. Stella Donnelly - Tricks (willapted33, #6) (8) -- Here's a result that DOES surprise me, albeit in the large gap in votes more than anything. No tricks are being played here, as Stella Donnelly advances.
Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Ayahuasca (Beno, #3) (9) vs. Holly Herndon - Frontier (shazam, #6) (3) -- I would say that this was an expected win for Vancouver Sleep Clinic, but I'm glad that "Frontier" received a few votes.
Mallrat - Groceries (Daryl, #3) (8) vs. Oso Oso - gb/ol h/nf (lyhom, #6) (4) -- Another matchup, another result that I expected. Mallrat is...not a rat? I'm trying, okay?
Nightmarathons - Cull Your Heart (American Idiot, #3) (1) vs. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator (Red, #6) (11) -- You know it's bad when the only person who voted against "Alligator" wasn't even the person who submitted "Cull Your Heart".
Karen O & Danger Mouse - Turn The Light (Bangwave, #3) (9) vs. The Head and the Heart - Missed Connection (Local Native, #6) (3) -- I won't lie, I'm surprised that this was such a lopsided result. I thought that "Missed Connection" would have more support than this. It just didn't get there.
Plague Vendor - New Comedown (janinho, #3) (6) vs. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis (peacebone, #6) (6) -- We had a couple of close votes be decided by Lord's late edit. "Kyoto" beating "Boys in the Better Land" was one...this was the other.
A reminder that the first round will have three day deadlines (though two of the sets have already went past the three day mark...whoops), while every subsequent round will have two day deadlines. The deadline day for voting is Friday, July 26th.
ROUND 1, SET #6: #3s vs #6s, PART TWO White Reaper - Might Be Right (Local Native, #3) vs. The Winter Passing – Original Sin (wheatsquares33, #6) Sam Fender - Play God (MoD, #3) vs. Winnetka Bowling League - Kombucha (bangwave, #6) black midi - Talking Heads (disassociative, #3) vs. WARKINGS feat. The Queen of the Damned - Sparta (dr.indie, #6) Basement - Reason For Breathing (lyhom, #3) vs. American Football - I Can't Feel You (Lordeftones, #6) Beirut - Gallipoli (Red, #3) vs. Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles (Daryl, #6) American Football - Doom in Full Bloom (willapted33, #3) vs. Basement - Be Here Now (MoD, #6) Stand Atlantic – Lavender Bones (wheatsquares33, #3) vs. Hatchie - Not That Kind (Beno, #6) Southern Avenue - Keep On (shazam, #3) vs. Tessa Violet - I Like (the idea of) You (BlurryFaceKyle, #6)

RedIf its ok with you I'll post the youtube video here for WARKINGS feat. The Queen of the Damned - Spartafrom what I've heard the spotify and youtube versions are different. Spotify version features male vocals were the Queen of the Dammed would do her part. Both version are great, but the one I submitted is the the youtube version. Plus you will all want to go to the gym after you view the video. You will see me there. After that you will want to rush hone and listen to the rest of the album. ;)

White Reaper - Might Be Right (Local Native, #3) (light 7) vs. The Winter Passing – Original Sin (wheatsquares33, #6) (strong 6) "Might Be Right" was actually somewhat of a disappointment considering how much "Little Silver Cross" grew on me
Sam Fender - Play God (MoD, #3) (strong 6) vs. Winnetka Bowling League - Kombucha (bangwave, #6) (light 7)
black midi - Talking Heads (disassociative, #3) (decent 7) vs. WARKINGS feat. The Queen of the Damned - Sparta (dr.indie, #6) (light 6) I listened to Doc's youtube link for this but I think I would've liked the other version more tbh, these guys sounded like an off-brand Ghost to me
Basement - Reason For Breathing (lyhom, #3) (decent 7) vs. American Football - I Can't Feel You (Lordeftones, #6) (light 7)
Beirut - Gallipoli (Red, #3) (light 7) vs. Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles (Daryl, #6) (light 7) I don't really see what some of you guys see in Sam Fender tbh, these songs were both alright but neither blew me out of the water or anything
American Football - Doom in Full Bloom (willapted33, #3) (decent 7) vs. Basement - Be Here Now (MoD, #6) (light 7)
Stand Atlantic – Lavender Bones (wheatsquares33, #3) (strong 7) vs. Hatchie - Not That Kind (Beno, #6) (light 8) Of course my favourite discovery of this set went against my own song smh
Southern Avenue - Keep On (shazam, #3) (decent 7) vs. Tessa Violet - I Like (the idea of) You (BlurryFaceKyle, #6) (strong 6) The Tessa Violet song had such a nice bassline but the rest of the song kinda let it down a bit

White Reaper - Might Be Right (Local Native, #3) (light to decent 7) vs. The Winter Passing – Original Sin (wheatsquares33, #6) (decent to strong 8)I've enjoyed White Reaper in the past, but I've heard better, though I could see this growing on me. Glad to see them charting anyway. But I'm not voting against myselfSam Fender - Play God (MoD, #3) (strong 8 to light 9) vs. Winnetka Bowling League - Kombucha (bangwave, #6) (light to decent 8)Hey I actually know both of these, maybe the first time that's happened. I like both a lot though, so I hate they're against each other. But Sam Fender is hard to beat. black midi - Talking Heads (disassociative, #3) (decent to strong 7) vs. WARKINGS feat. The Queen of the Damned - Sparta (dr.indie, #6) (decent to strong 4)Glad someone submitted black midi, I keep meaning to check them out but always forget. This song was pretty cool. I'm usually on board with Dr. Indie's fierce metal picks but this one was uh. Not good. I listened to both versions, neither did it for me. (also singingrulebritannia your Tadano pic is so cute)Basement - Reason For Breathing (lyhom, #3) (decent to strong 8) vs. American Football - I Can't Feel You (Lordeftones, #6) (decent to strong 7)I quite like both of these, but Reason for Breathing I'm actually inspired to chart. As much as I liked the first two singles and this one, I really do owe it to myself to listen to this new Basement record. I like LP3 a lot, this track doesn't really stand out but it's still good, sounds like I Will Possess Your HeartBeirut - Gallipoli (Red, #3) (light to decent 6) vs. Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles (Daryl, #6) (decent to strong 9)Galipoli was in eh. Fine, listenable, unremarkable. Guess I liked the horns though. But Hypersonic Missiles may be my favorite song of the year so.American Football - Doom in Full Bloom (willapted33, #3) (decent to strong 6) vs. Basement - Be Here Now (MoD, #6) (light to decent 9)American Football against Basement again? Hmmm. Well this is a weaker American Football cut and I previously submitted Be Here Now in uh some Madness, so easy pick.Stand Atlantic – Lavender Bones (wheatsquares33, #3) (light to decent 9) vs. Hatchie - Not That Kind (Beno, #6) (strong 7 to light 8)"Of course my favourite discovery of this set went against my own song smh"Southern Avenue - Keep On (shazam, #3) (strong 7 to light 8) vs. Tessa Violet - I Like (the idea of) You (BlurryFaceKyle, #6) (decent to strong 6)Keep On was probably my second favorite first listen this round, I'd come back to this one. Tessa Violet song had things to like and a nice groove, but the chorus was annoying

White Reaper - Might Be Right (Local Native, #3) {7.3} vs. The Winter Passing – Original Sin (wheatsquares33, #6) {7.3} Ok I feel bad because I haven't voted for a single one of James' songs yet, lol. Rating tie so I'll let this be the first time
Sam Fender - Play God (MoD, #3) {7} vs. Winnetka Bowling League - Kombucha (bangwave, #6) {6}
black midi - Talking Heads (disassociative, #3) {8.4} vs. WARKINGS feat. The Queen of the Damned - Sparta (dr.indie, #6) {5.6}
Basement - Reason For Breathing (lyhom, #3) {7.1} vs. American Football - I Can't Feel You (Lordeftones, #6) {6.9}

ROUND 1, SET #6: #3s vs #6s, PART TWO White Reaper - Might Be Right (Local Native, #3) vs. The Winter Passing – Original Sin (wheatsquares33, #6) might be "Pumped Up Kicks" in that bassline, but I love it. Easily one of my favorite songs of the week. "Original Sin" was great poprocker. You made me preview the songs twice before deciding. Sam Fender - Play God (MoD, #3) vs. Winnetka Bowling League - Kombucha (bangwave, #6) "play GOD is the sort of Indierock that does little to keep me enticed. I still gotta try that "Kombucha drink, but the song is alright. black midi - Talking Heads (disassociative, #3) vs. WARKINGS feat. The Queen of the Damned - Sparta (dr.indie, #6) This is a bit too wierd for me. In some guitar strums very Primus like, and that doesn't help. "Sparta" is my 2019 theme song. I walk into my local gym and they play it for me as a joke but it also gets me pumped up hard. The song itself is very melodic and very much what 300 was all about. I gave a whole explanation about the persona each member represents on my weekly chart thread. "Sparta" is not just a song. It's a way of life. Basement - Reason For Breathing (lyhom, #3) vs. American Football - I Can't Feel You (Lordeftones, #6) Basement give off a certain Royal Blood vibe with this song. Why don't they release this to Active? I've seen American Football a lot on PULSE members'charts. Personally they don't tune me in too strongly. Nice melody tho. Beirut - Gallipoli (Red, #3) vs. Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles (Daryl, #6) "Gallipoli" is Quite the choice of a song for a Rock tournament. Why do I get Mariachi vibes here. Sam Fender's song builds up to a nice sounding Alt rocker. American Football - Doom in Full Bloom (willapted33, #3) vs. Basement - Be Here Now (MoD, #6) American Football is way too calm for me. It's nice and aesthetic in places ,but the intros can make me very impatient. This is the Basement song that charted this year. I started really digging this one right after it fell off the chart. Stand Atlantic – Lavender Bones (wheatsquares33, #3) vs. Hatchie - Not That Kind (Beno, #6) Here is a no brainer for me. Loved the song the moment you featured it in your weekly chart. The Hatchie song is no "ugly Duckling" tho. Very Aesthetic. Southern Avenue - Keep On (shazam, #3) vs. Tessa Violet - I Like (the idea of) You (BlurryFaceKyle, #6) Well Well Well. Female rocker coming my way. I thought I was choosing Tessa Violet for sure....until I heard "Keep On". This is like the flipside of Ed Sheeran's "Blow"*BTW, I wanted to say something earlier. Too much of the same bands appearing in this tournament. I say we limit a band's appearance to 2 songs per tournament in the future.

White Reaper - Might Be Right (Local Native, #3) vs. The Winter Passing – Original Sin (wheatsquares33, #6) Might Be Right needs to smash on radio
Sam Fender - Play God (MoD, #3) vs. Winnetka Bowling League - Kombucha (bangwave, #6) Kombucha is one of my jams now, hope to see it do well!
black midi - Talking Heads (disassociative, #3) vs. WARKINGS feat. The Queen of the Damned - Sparta (dr.indie, #6) Is this even a fucking contest?
Basement - Reason For Breathing (lyhom, #3) vs. American Football - I Can't Feel You (Lordeftones, #6) Reason for Breathing may be better than Be Here Now, I Can't Feel You isn't as good as Silhouettes. I'm seeing American Football live soon so maybe my opinion will change then.
Beirut - Gallipoli (Red, #3) vs. Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles (Daryl, #6) Gallipoli was a good first listen, but I've grown to like Hypersonic Missiles more over time.
American Football - Doom in Full Bloom (willapted33, #3) vs. Basement - Be Here Now (MoD, #6) Doom in Full Bloom sounded better the second time I've heard it.
Stand Atlantic – Lavender Bones (wheatsquares33, #3) vs. Hatchie - Not That Kind (Beno, #6) Another great song from Hatchie, but Lavender Bones was a good first listen, too.
Southern Avenue - Keep On (shazam, #3) vs. Tessa Violet - I Like (the idea of) You (BlurryFaceKyle, #6) Preferred the vocals and instrumental on the former.

black midi - Talking Heads (disassociative, #3) vs. WARKINGS feat. The Queen of the Damned - Sparta (dr.indie, #6) I'm upset at myself for not having submitted something off their album, maybe my second favorite album of the year (not like I've listened to many of them).
Basement - Reason For Breathing (lyhom, #3) vs. American Football - I Can't Feel You (Lordeftones, #6) Ugh at the superior Basement and AF tracks in this round getting matched up...
