"Let me break it down to the facts, You will never get a girl like that. You gotta step up to the plate with a bat, That's all I gotta say about that."
Quoting the lyrics are all I gotta say about the quality of the lyrics.

Hmm, is right. I mean it definitely has country elements. I am going to have to continue to listen but I didn't hate it at first.

LOL^
Danielle has such a pretty, soft, and gentle voice.
Whoever forced her to do a song like this (I wonder...) is completely sacrificing what's unique about her vocal abilities and talents.
How old is Danielle? She sounds 13 singing this.
(Also just because she says "*mumble* *mumble* the beat of the banjo" doesn't make her any more country than Ariana Grande.)

This is cute... for Radio Disney.
I don't hate it, but don't love it. She has a great voice, and her debut album was great; I wish they continued in that direction.
Is she on Big Machine? That would explain, uh... this.

This will be a hit for her. The one song on her debut Album that sold well and had some buzz via Blake Shelton tweeting about it etc was "I will Never Forget You". It showcased her voice and it had some buzz via twitter/social media around it, yet it was never released as a single. She needed something to fit her young look/personality and I think this will do well enough to create some buzz around her.

Is she on Big Machine? That would explain, uh... this. Yes she is, which definitely explains it. Makes me wonder how many other acts are going to "re-invent their sound" to "push themselves as artists" Edit: great post from Windmills describing a lyrics in this song:

This song is a complete mess. First of all, the vocal arrangement is going to be extremely grating on some listeners when this gets to radio with the lyrics that sbp17 pointed out. It had some potential during the verses but the awful climax of that spoken chorus is absolutely hideous -- no way I'll be able to make it through the next time I hear it. The production is not that good and I hate the subject of this song. Speaking from someone with experience of what this song is talking about, it's not as easy as the spoken word part of this song explains it is -- it can be extremely emotional and there are many factors as to why someone can be pushed into the "friend zone." The musical elements of the song just had insult to injury, for me. I really enjoyed Danielle's first two singles but "Friend Zone" is easily one of the worst I've heard in 2015.

Wow....the studio version is bad...like really bad. Even Sam Hunt would wince at this....it's not just that it's a pop song trying to be a country song, it's just a REALLY bad pop song. I don't know whether to call people like Danielle, The Band Perry, and The Eli Young Band artists or puppets

Haha this is just laughable. I can't believe they let her walk out of the studio with that song being the final recorded version. It won't be a hit on either format, and I'd recommend they already start thinking about single #2 because I think this could bring her career down.

There are no words to adequately describe how atrocious this is.
It's gotten to the point where I cringe when I see anyone who's signed to Big Machine, because they seem to insist on ruining the indenity of 99% of the artists they handle.
Ugh.

Wow already #42 on iTunes after just 1 hour. Incredible sales! Girl got a serious stan-base.
I was expecting the worst after reading the comments, but I'm fine with the song. Sounds like it'd be very popular with younger listeners.
Keep an eye on Danielle possibly becoming the next On The Verge artist. They haven't picked anyone yet, but will in early September.

More than likely this will get removed, but when the official lyric video is released, will post new link.

I was wondering what happened to her after discussing previous Voice contestants and winners last week. Nice to see she's working on a new album at least. She might be the first Voice contestant to actually release two albums.
On another note, it took 4 people to write that song? Wow.

I don't see it in the top 200? It's 40 on country iTunes, is that what you meant? Because that really means nothing, lol. Anyway... I like the song. I'm not sure why everyone is finding this atrocious. It's not groundbreaking, but its not that bad.

A lot of people are disliking it because there minds are all focused on the popular aartists. If Carrie or Miranda sang this there would be no negativity toward the song, I honestly like the arrangement and its a good song to dance to. But what do i know? Lol.

Jesus... I wouldn't even be able to tolerate this song if Martina sang it... THAT'S when you know it's a bad song... Anyway, I found myself getting roped into the melody of the pre-chorus. And then the talking started... I have no words to accurately explain the rage that coursed through my body when she said, "That's all I gotta say about that," with the emphasis of the sentence on the final "that"... Lol I know that's quite petty, but if I ever hear this on the radio my hate for that line is only going to grow exponentially every time I hear it... That's all I gotta say about that.

No, people are not disliking this because it's sung by a "less popular artist." I would dislike this if any artist sang it. To me, bad music is bad music and this to me is bad music. Most here explain why he or she dislikes a song with specific musical elements which many in this thread have about "Friend Zone." Rationalizing why people have disliked this song because "our minds are all focused on popular artists" is just rude and completely inaccurate. I can't stand stand posts that assume why posters are disliking or liking a song. It's just opinions. If you enjoy the song then please, take no offense to what I or anybody else has to say to heart.

Per Windmills Country on Twitter....
"In light of recent releases, a quick note: a recent pitch sheet to publishers had Danielle Bradbery seeking to be "the female Thomas Rhett""

Sabre don't get me wrong. I was just answering somebody's question on the reason nobody likes the song. That comment was what I thought was the reason, it was not toward anybody in particular. cus I agree with u in "If a song is good, it's good" even though I might like something u don't no matter what song or singer. I was skeptical about song before I heard it, then I heard it and thought her voice sounded better than "Heart Of Dixie" which I thought was a rushed single and was kinda of boring. I also like her look on this single cover better than her debut album. It also good seeing her having fun with this dancing song. so i'll try to only say positive things on here and when I dislike a song i'll be nice about it.

Next time, quote the person you're attempting to answer (like I did here) and that way it can be more clear to the reader as to who or what you're referencing. Either way, I personally don't think it's a good idea to lump those have disliked this song by your reasoning (even if it was hypothetical). People have already expressed why they dislike this song, so there's really no reason anyone should be baffled or confused as to why some posters dislike "Friend Zone." I just wanted to point that out and don't harbor any ill feelings; I was just bothered by the statement. Let's get back to discussion.

This is a train wreck and it's not her fault.
Artistically, she's lost. Maybe she never even knew who she was to begin with. I don't think she ever had time to figure it out. She came out of The Voice a country artist. That didn't work, in my opinion, because she didn't have the songs ("Heart of Dixie", dead end job at National bank, a husband who always drank. TOTAL WRONG SONG CHOICE. Looking at you BMLG A&R). I love, love, love her voice. Her lack of personality is a slight problem, but I think it's because she's again, lost. Not confident. People can sense that and it is a big time turn off.
Big Machine should have gotten Danielle with the team that was developing Maddie & Tae to help her find herself. Lord knows she had the time! I can't hep but think she would have come out better with some focused Artist development.
Right now, the Emperor has taken over and no one is going to tell him he is losing his grip. See Exhibit B: The Band Perry Oh, and Exhibit C: EYB Oh and D: RaeLynn (actually, she hasn't changed much, she just isn't working so that's not really Borchetta's fault)

Let me break it down to the facts: I've listened to this a lot of times already It isn't country or great AT ALL, but I think it's quite catchy and of course they're trying to crossover her, maybe using her Voice fame? As a pop single, I like it better than Live Forever, for example. But when I read a few months ago that she was taking a different direction I didn't think it would be something like this, but more of a rock oriented sound. I think maybe she's lost, as mentioned above, and I think she's really young too. And it's bad because I thought she was one of those who would stick for a long time. Not so sure anymore.

I listened to this and the verse and prechorus reminded me of songs by Carrie (eg Good girl, Cowboy Casanova). It was quite refreshing actually, but then the chorus hit and it was more like a lesser version of a Taylor Swift attempt at being Avril Lavigne. Not horrible though, and I can accept it considering DB's youth. I still prefer this to several bro country songs tbh
