Exactly. I mean, the musical aspects (vocal arrangement, production) would be bad enough but the song's subject is so wrong headed it isn't funny. It makes it sound so cavalier and the solution being a simple fix, when that's just not the case in real life. I like Danielle. She's always seemed like a down to earth person and I really liked her first two singles. But this song is absolutely atrocious and deserves zero success. "Friend Zone" is not the best song this yr, but it's not a bad song either. In my own personal opinion...this is a "bad song."

I just can't believe this is getting released to country radio. I mean this takes the cake for most polarizing song of the year. Big Machine really needs to back out of releasing this. The critical reception isn't pretty whatsoever most country critics have bashed this song the youtube and iTunes comments are mixed. This is not the song Danielle should rely upon if she wants to gain traction back at radio.
I can can only imagine how the callout scores will look.
I'm all for more females for country music but I am not supporting a pop song that's not well written and that godawful spoken word bridge that I can't understand how anyone can like.

Yeah, it is a really bad song. The spoken word bridge is cringe inducing!
I understand why some people like it... there's many folks about there that will like anything that is remotely catchy and easy to get. Songs you can jam to and not having to think about the meaning of the lyrics, etc. I like this kinda music too... when I'm at a party with friends drinking some beer, or when I go out at night to a club... those are the situations in which I enjoy basic cacthy bad music, because I don't care about who sings, what the song's about, how good or bad it is, just want something to party to. But when I actually want to listen to music, appreciate it and relate to it? You can be assured basic catchy bad music is not what I look for... some do, but I don't. Tastes are different for each person and what we like depends on what we want to take out of the music we listen to.

^ I don't really follow country music news and artists much these days... but what other country artists have Big Machine launched/propelled successfully since Taylor?

FGL um The Band Perry, Justin Moore and Brantley Gilbert have seen decent amount of success. Big Machine helped rejuvenate Tim McGraw and Rascal Flatts careers for a little bit. That's about it.

Music video was nothing special and looked like it didn't have a big budget perhaps, but Danielle looks great in it, I will say that. I just really can't get this song out of my head. That spoken-word bit after the chorus is one of the catchiest things I've heard in any song recently. Really loving the instrumentation on this song too.

I think this will just end being a buzz single for Danielle, which would explain the budget. But geez, could Danielle be more awkward? To me it looks like she would rather be doing ANYTHING else.

I agree with bigfan101 The spoken parts are indeed catchy. It's just the lyrics of the spoken part might be the worst I have ever heard in country music. Cringeworthy.

This is the worst song of the year for me (which is pretty remarkable, given that "Ridiculous" was released this year). The musical elements would be bad enough but the song's lyrics are just flat out inaccurate for what the "friend zone" is. This won't do anything at radio, so I agree with bigfan101 that this is just a buzz single, rather than BMLG expecting anything in terms of airplay success.

I won't go so far and say this is so bad that it's good. But it's so bad. lol Well, to its defense, after listening to this for the first time, I admit it is a bit catchy. Yeah, it has that going on for it. Not sure if that's what a country artist should aim for, I mean, ONLY that.

There is good catchy, and then there is bad catchy. This certainly doesn't fall into the first category for me.

I would actually quite enjoy this song, if it weren't for how atrocious the lyrics are. I think that it's extremely catchy, but I cringe at the lyrics in spoken word part every single time. I'm hoping this is just a buzz single too, but I doubt that was the original intention for it. The lyrics are just way too bad in this for it to become a hit though, so it would be smart for BMLG to rethink this.

I agree that it will probably be just a buzz single while she's preparing for the next record, and just released because she'll be touring this fall on the CMT Tour (with Thomas Rhett and Brett Eldredge). I came to like the song more now that when it was released but I'm still hoping that it will not be an official single. Currently, it was only released on The Highway.

Anything new with this song. I am starting to think this is purely a buzz song since well the critical reception for this hasn't been this negative since I don't know when. I really hope this doesn't actually see the light of day at country radio because Danielle doesn't need this bad of a song to just ruin her career. Like I said in the Live Forever thread it's best for Big Machine to stop now and find anything better to release.

This song is worst country song of the 2010's. I feel like XM The Highway will almost play any song they are sent. XM The Highway is still playing this song. What person decided this song was ever a good for anyone ever let alone Bradbery. Horrible.

Someone lock this thread. There is no point in bringing this back up.

I think they are getting "paid" by certain people to get their music on air.

There are so many good female artists, I am a huge fan of Clare Dunn, Ashley Monroe, Leah Turner. As for this song and thread, I heard "Friend Zone" 3 times in one day on XM The Highway last week. This thread is still relevant in my opinion. I always thought Bradbery had a good shot to have a long career after The Voice, but songs this bad can kill an artist.

Listen to The Highway for 2 hours straight one day, and count the number of male artists songs played. People complained on FB when this song was played last year, and I guess the powers that be decided to bring it back because it was pulled for a long time.
