I'm loving this the more I listen to it. At first I didn't like the slow intro, but now I like how it starts out slow, kicks in full gear and gets faster, then gets even faster, then slows down again. I think it's cleverly constructed. I can't even begin to imagine how he remembers all the words to this song!!

This sounds great! Reminds me of a classic rock song from the 70s. Great lyrics, no weird production like some of the stuff on Outsiders, and I think I even heard some a mandolin and a steel guitar in there! Good job Eric! I get a Don McLean vibe... Reminds me of American Pie. Really loving the Americana vibe he's giving off with this album

This is right up there with Homeboy for my favorite single of his. The fact that some people think Luke Bryan is better than this guy is just bothersome.
I really hope this smashes for him, though with it being 5:19 long, I don't know how radio will react. Definitely has a ton of potential, I think anyone regardless of what genre they listen to would love this song. Great sound and meaning.

There must be a radio edit because I've caught the tail end of this song on the radio twice and both times it had a slightly different ending. Of course, not hearing the whole thing either time I had no idea how long it was. But it DID sound different at the end.

I really don't think that it'll end up becoming a deterrent for this song's chart prospects. In terms of radio's initial reaction, "Mr. Misunderstood" was the most added song on MB this week with 72 adds, so radio certainly opened their arms wide open to it. We'll see how the airplay translates but this is still a lead single from Eric Church, so I'm expecting it to do pretty well in the end.

Apologies for a double post but "Mr. Misunderstood" debuts at #36 on Billboard Airplay this week. :)

Man, this song just puts a big smile on my face every time I listen to it. No song's done that for me in a while. The change of pace just before First time I met Alabama Hannah might be my favorite moment in any song this year.

As a casual Eric Church fan, I'm afraid I started listening to this twice and it lost my attention both times as the intro seemed very slow and not developing into anything very interesting. Maybe I needed to skip halfway in... A radio edit seems like a good idea.

Anywhere to hear the radio edit yet? Yes it's shorter and still good. Cuts out the instrumental in the beginning. Also cuts instrumental and "na nas" at the end. Ends with Eric singing the first line again acoustically.

Anywhere to hear the radio edit yet? I've heard it on the radio four times already, on The Highway.

This has a very American Pie feel to it and great lyrics. Love it.

I finally heard this on WYRK this afternoon and yes, they end the song with Eric singing the first line of the song acoustically, but it definitely felt like an edit -- wasn't seamless at all.

"Mr. Misunderstood" is actually outpacing "Give Me Back My Hometown" (albeit, slightly) as its currently two spots higher on the rolling chart and 200 spins higher at the 10 day mark than GMBMH was.
This will jump into the MB top 30 this upcoming Sunday after getting into the Billboard top 30 this week.

I never even consider "The Outsiders" since it flamed out so fast (and debuted so high), but it was technically the lead single.

I more or less have the same thoughts here. "The Outsiders" was barely two and half months old when "Give Me Back My Hometown" was released in January 2014.

They claim it was a buzz single, but I'm not sure if I buy that completely. It also could just be some choice words to try and cover their ass.

I just never bought the fact that EMI/UMG Nashville truly believed that song would ever be put into heavy rotation on tens of stations, and reach the top 10. It's peak was totally unsurprising to me.

Yeah, no way was "The Outsiders" going to be a thing. I never even heard it on the radio once until well after the fact, and it was right before "Long Black Train". Talk about whiplash!
This song is definitely going to be huge. Quite probably my favorite Eric Church single to date. I love the detailed story it paints, and how it uses that to drive home the point of sympathy for the "misunderstood" such as I.

Eric said on his Outsiders Radio show on The Highway, that the version of "Mr. Misunderstood" you hear on the radio, was the very first take on the very first day of making the album.

I really like this one a lot as well. I like how it starts out slow with him talking to his son. I'd still like it even if it stayed like that the whole way through!

I never thought of that. Perhaps I am Mr. Misunderstand. That was how I took it but maybe he's speaking to anyone like himself, or maybe even to himself in the past. Hmm....

It seems like he might be speaking about his younger days, and he's also giving advice to other "misunderstood" kids currently in the same situation, with an "it gets better" message that's based on his own life experience. That's my take. :)
