^ One thing to note is that he was on ShowDog which was really struggling with every one of their artists so It's a little unclear how much Trace was petering off vs. ShowDog just not performing how they should. His age makes me believe it was a mix of the two but I do think a stronger label could've kept him higher on the totem pole than he was with ShowDog. As for my thoughts on the song, I like it. I do think you nailed it on the head when you say the production feels a little flat and uninteresting, but I've been finding most singles from this label group to have a similar feel so I'm not surprised. I'd like to see this hit even with the boring production choices because I've always liked what Trace brings to the table and this one fits in with his catalog very nicely. Country Music Rule #1: NEVER sign to your friend's label. Trace Adkins' time at ShowDog really didn't do him any favors. Toby Keith is there to promote one artist and that's himself. Come to think about it, Keith hasn't done a very good job at that lately.

I think it will be pretty compelling to see just how many adds Trace can get tomorrow and furthermore, just how much "Jesus And Jones" can accomplish. He landed with a good label group, although this will be the imprint's first real shot at promoting a single since "Backroad Song" was an OTV selection. For what it's worth, "Jesus And Jones" is already showing 4 committed adds on Mediabase, on HitsDailyDouble.
I do agree to a point about the flat production, although I think the production and rockin' nature is something country radio will be receptive to and this is the kind of song that was appropriate for Trace's comeback.
I'm predicting will get into the top 40 -- perhaps top 30 -- but that's about the limit I can predict right now, with Trace's age. The fact he spent 2010 though 2013 with Show Dog is reason to believe he might have had a couple more hits to put out if he had stuck with UMG but that's something that we'll never know for sure.

I'm just being nitpicky here but Trace was never with UMG. He was with Capitol, but that was before EMI Music (which included both Capitol Nashville & EMI Nashville) was absorbed by UMG, which put both Capitol Nashville and EMI Nashville under the UMG Nashville umbrella. Yes, #IAmANerd. As for the adds total, I'm gonna go ahead and predict 35-45 first week adds (and of course add day is Tuesday, since tomorrow is a holiday).

I've always been a chart nerd (since the mid-2000's) but I never went knee deep into the label game until after Trace left Capitol Nashville. I definitely think "Jesus And Jones" will finish as the second most added song (behind "My Church").

I know Show-Dog wasn't much of a successful label, especially in the last few years, but I'm not so convinced that Trace was better off not signing with them when he did. At the time, X was basically a flop sales-wise compared to his prior album efforts, especially considering the momentum he had coming off "You're Gonna Miss This" (which was absolutely huge). But it was looking likely during the X era that Trace was nearing the end of his hitmaking days with the reception of its singles... granted the second/third singles did scrape the Top 15, but both left little to no impact and sold poorly. "Just Fishin'" managing to return him to the Top 10 again (for what may very well be the last time) was probably more of a lucky fluke than anything, but I don't think his 2010-present would've looked any different on Capitol, and I honestly wouldn't have been surprised if they would've dumped him by now anyway. Just throwing my $.02 out there on that.
I do think this one will be Top 40 bound at least, but I'm not confident it'll make Top 30 and I doubt it makes it much higher (if at all) than that. He's always had a bit of a rocky relationship with radio, but the last 5 years have been particularly rougher and due to his age as well, I just don't see him doing a whole lot with this release and even if it does hit, I think it'll be something of a consolation prize from country radio before they drop him like they've done w/ George, Alan, and Toby recently.

It looks like "Jesus And Jones" got 29 adds on impact day.

It looks like "Jesus And Jones" got 29 adds on impact day. And 35 total adds, which is at the low end of what I guessed for his first week adds number (35-45). Not too shabby for Trace.

Nice debut for "Jesus And Jones" at #54 on Billboard Airplay this evening.
It is Trace's first charting single in two and a half years ("Watch The World End").

Great news on the debut. I'm hoping this becomes a big enough hit that I'll hear it on the radio. I've been jamming to this song for weeks. Sonically, it is very contemporary but lyrically it is right in Trace's wheelhouse. For the sonic reason, I think this will catch on and become a minor hit as in Top 40.

"Jesus And Jones" got 12 more adds this week, which gives this song over 60 monitored stations. Trace just missed the Mediabase top 50 this week by about 55 total points, so this one is off to a good start for someone like Trace, who hasn't had a hit at radio in nearly five years.

Trace landed at #45 on Mediabase this week, although the gains have been rather pedestrian. A bunch of tracks in the 50's and 40's aren't exactly blazing the world on fire but the competition is rather light so "Jesus And Jones" has already worked its way up to #43 on the rolling chart today. Trace will probably get passed by Jordan Rager this week but both "Jesus And Jones" and "Southern Boy" leaped "Mayday" this morning, so the back-and-forth will likely continue until Sunday since all three songs were separated by 64 Mediabase points on this past Mediabase chart.
This will get to the top 40 at some point (at least on Mediabase -- its currently #50 on Billboard) and when it does, it'll be Trace's first top 40 single in over four years ("Million Dollar View").

I really hope you are right about this song hitting top 40. I have heard this on mainstream radio a few times already, and it sounds SO good on the radio. It continues to grow on me with every listen, and I want Trace to meet success again so badly.
Well, as long as the music is good, which this definitely is. As soon as he releases another turkey, I may change my mind about having him back ;)

The influx of new releases have really hurt "Jesus And Jones". After working its way up to #45 on Mediabase, Trace's song has lost 40 spins over the past ten days and had lost about 20 spins and has only gained 100k in total audience over the past three weeks. Eight songs have leaped Trace since March 1st on the rolling chart ("Came Here To Forget", "Huntin' And Fishin'", "American Country Love Song", "Make You Miss Me", "Southern Boy", "Girl Next Door", "It Don't Hurt Like It Used To", "I Know Somebody").
Usually 2-3 songs in the 40-50 range really get bogged down by star artists releasing new singles and Trace's song has been one of the hardest hit. I'm still hopeful this can find its way to the top 30 but top 40 just became much harder over the past two weeks. Trace is being relegated to light rotation and overnight spins, which has happened to other artists with long pedigrees at radio lately (Gary Allan, Craig Morgan).
I really like this song but it's just so hard for artists like Trace to break back at mainstream radio right now. He does have a great label group promoting him and "Jesus And Jones" has worked its way onto half of the Mediabase panel, so hopefully time will play to Trace's benefit.

I suspect that the NASH Icon stations will give this some spins but not enough to do anything more than perhaps snag a few weeks on CT40 and nothing more; it's nice having his sublime voice back on the radio, and I do hear many of his classics on the radio all the time.

The Nash Icon stations aren't on the Mediabase panel (because they don't play enough current music), so even if they are playing "Jesus and Jones", that wouldn't help this one move up on the published Mediabase and Billboard charts. Most of the regular Nash/Cumulus stations are on the Mediabase panel (so long as they are in big enough markets), but I don't believe the Cumulus block has added this one yet. A couple of the Bullseye callout charts show that this song is testing very well, but Trace is an older artist who hasn't had a hit in years so I think it's pretty unlikely that he'll ever score another top 20 hit again. Even top 30 will be hard to do -- Trace simply has no momentum.

I think this song is just about done. Trace only managed to gain 10 spins this week for Mediabase and lost 105k in audience. I have a feeling Trace will be losing his bullet this week, and since Trace hasn't got any ads the last two weeks and I doubt he gets any this week. Basically this song is on life support and I hope the label gives up soon so this song can get out of the way since it's quite clear "Jesus and Jones" is about done.
If I'm being honest this song has done about as well as I expected it to as Trace has no momentum with radio since it's been 4 and a half years since Trace was in the Top 10 ("Just Fishing"). Just doesn't seem like there's much buzz with this song and I have a feeling this song will at most last another month.

I'm now going to fix this error and probably get some sleep tonight which is probably what I need.

Heard this on the radio for the first time tonight. I like this for what it is, but it feels like there's a lack of energy in it or something missing. It just kinda has this one-dimensional feel to it that doesn't make it stand out as anything particularly interesting.

I think this one's just about out of steam. "Jesus And Jones" went without a bullet this week on both Mediabase and Billboard (lost over 200 points on Mediabase -- yikes) and has only gained 30 net spins the past seven weeks on MB...yikes again. It's nearing the 20 week mark on the Billboard chart, too.
Stations just won't convert Trace. He's at that age that radio has collectively decided he can no longer be in substantial rotation anymore.

Trace's singles are always hit or miss with me and I think there have been more misses than hits, but I really like this one. Its too bad it didn't perform better on the charts. It must be frustrating for artists when they reach the point that radio wont play them hardly at all anymore just because of their age.

This one's done. Trace's song has lost over 130 spins and 500k in audience on Mediabase this week. Went without a bullet last week so "Jesus And Jones" will spend one more week on the MB chart.
