Billboard - Mainstream Top 40 - 2015 Year-End Chart

It's that time of the year again. Billboard's 2015 chart year has come to a close. The year started with the issue dated December 6, 2014 and ended with the charts released this week for the issue dated November 28, 2015.

As per my usual disclamer, Billboard's rule for their year-end rankings states that only spins for the weeks for which a track was on the chart are counted. Any airplay a track received below the top 40 and, subsequent, recurrent airplay are NOT counted. This makes the Billboard rankings, notably, different from the Mediabase rankings (Mediabase counts everything). Barring any unforseen typgraphical errors (I'm human..it happens), this should match up, line-for-line, with the year-end rankings that Billboard will publish in the coming weeks (Billboard, usually, releases the top 50 on their site). Fun bonus...there's a tie in the top 10. I'm not sure how Billboard breaks spin ties. Hopefully I've got #9 and #10 in the correct order.

The artist rankings are determined by weighting the spins amongst the artists given label credit on each track. i.e. If only one artist is credited to a track, that artist, obviously, gets 100% of the spins. If a track has a featured artist, 75% of the spins go to the lead artist and 25% to the featured artist. If all billed artists are given equal credit, then the spins are split, evenly, amongst them, etc. Best I've been able to tell, this is how Billboard does it.

For comparison purposes, here's how the year-end chart would look using that set of rankings. Same rules apply: Survey period is December 6, 2014 - November 28, 2015, spins only get counted if the song ranks in the ranking's Top 40 on a given week.

Peaks are also listed based on where a song peaked within the survey period. So if it peaked outside of that ("Habits", "Shake it Off", to name a few), that isn't reflected below.

I was hoping Billboard would have come criterion for breaking ties. Apparently not. They're both #8. I, also, had "Thinking Out Loud" ahead of both of them.
