I'm pretty sure the people who mainly buy these compilations are for collections or people who don't follow or buy pop music on a regular basis.

I have never understood the point of these albums They made more sense in the 90s and early 00s when digital downloads didn't exist. But since the advent of iTunes and now streaming, they have become quite pointless.

They're useful for catchup, especially if you want to fill up the year-ends of 2010-now. The 4 CDs for 2013 completed more than half of the year-end, and it's considerably cheaper than getting the tracks as singles.

Even if they are selling "only" 300,000 units, that is still more than many artists are selling and more than many of the artists on the very discs LOL. Plus, they don't even cost that much to promote, it's just getting some licenses from other labels and most of the labels are very into it because it is an additional form of basically free promo. They have their artist on a comp disc that people use for parties and events and someone could hear a song and then it leads them into them buying more of their music.
It still makes sense to release these discs, otherwise, they wouldn't. It's that simple lol
