Chase is live with Stormy Warren right now on The Highway. He pretty much said he's growing up and he got tired of singing the same old "get in my truck" type of songs and his album is much more mature. They wrote Whisper for his last album but it was written too late to make it on. Stormy kind of brought up how he wants to be more mature but Whisper sounds like the old him. Chase said he just wanted to "get this one out there" and "get it out of the way." He loves the chorus and wanted to get this out as a bridge to the more serious stuff on his album. Pretty sure he just thinks this will be a hit and didn't want it to go unreleased, even if it goes against the direction he's wanting to go. You'd think he would just scrap this and release one of thoses, but I'm not surprised. He said people that judge artists on singles are ignorant. Albums tell the whole story. He defends himself a lot. So basically he just continues to be his normal deuchebag self. Nice Chase. Ugh, who the crap is buying this? Whisper is, to me, EASILY the worst song released thus far in 2016. Well I don't think it's nearly as bad as Dierk's new song. At least Chase is being himself here.

Let's keep the criticism to the music, and not the integrity of the artist. Nobody here personally knows Chase, so there's no need for name calling or animosity. Anyone can be brave and slander someone's name from behind a keyboard. Let's try to be a step above YouTube comments.

this is awful. sounds like a album filler track off the deluxe edition of his first record. "Carolina Can" "look at my Truck" 'Um Girl" all potential hits being passed on for Ride 2.

So Chase sent this letter out to his email list. He basically says something along the lines of this song doesn't have more depth and meaning but the rest of the album will.

I don't know what to think about this song. I kinda like it. I don't see what the uproar is about. I've heard worse songs than this.

Excited to hear it! I am still upset he never released "50 Shades Of Crazy" that would have been a massive hit.

Oh my God, this is worse than I was anticipating. It's easily one of the worst vocal performances I have heard in a Country radio single recently -- when Chase sings "tonight" at the beginning of the chorus it sounds like he is really straining to hit that note (I also don't buy into the fact that his "raspiness" sells the lyrics). I also am heavily distracted by the backing vocals -- it makes it give off that creepy vibe and tone that just reinforces my preconceived notion I had going into clicking play. Then there's the production. I do like some studio effects on certain songs but this song is just way too much for me. The vocals and studio production make me weary of what the live version of this song will sound like.
Chase has had some decent material since 2013 but overall, I just haven't been impressed by his music and some of it is downright atrocious ("Ready Set Roll"). I agree that we should try to avoid going off into discussion about him as a person since it doesn't really benefit the integrity of this board but his music and this song is a thumbs down for me.

I don't know whether I should laugh or shake my head.
I'm thinking both. How a song like this can be classified as country is beyond me. It's like any artist can release a song to country radio these days, and because it's a "country" station, the song is country, too.

I give Chase a lot of credit for sending out that letter. I'm not a fan of this one, but it's almost like he's saying "hey guys, listen. I know ya'll are sick of this nonsense but the music industry is tough and this is pretty much a safe bet for getting my album out."
Either way, it's amazing how much things have changed. In the past, an artist would release an album and it would be the best 3 or 4 songs that were released to radio. Now it's the most generic, broad, and commercial they can find. It's within the album that the gems lie. That's pretty much what Chase is saying too. Bummer.

It's within the album that the gems lie. Often times I'm just as critical as you are about artists releasing generic songs that are meant to appeal to "the masses", but with songs like "Burning House", "Girl Crush", "Stay A Little Longer", "Diamond Rings & Old Barstools", "Say You Do", "Like A Cowboy", "Little Toy Guns", and others becoming massive hits this past year, I disagree that a song like "Whisper" is what Chase needs to release in order to be successful and get his sophomore album out. I get that he's still a new artist and I understand that maybe he and his team/label don't think he can afford to take a risk by releasing something that's actually country and has a bit more substance to it, but I actually think that's the best way to become successful: make good music that doesn't sound like a rehash of someone else's music. I'll give Chase that last part: "Whisper" doesn't really sound like anything else right now. But that's not a compliment, because it's not good music. The lyrics are laughably bad and the production is awful. Even if this song is a hit, I don't see it standing the test of time. I expect "Whisper" to be widely derided by the industry as a whole, with country radio perhaps being the only exception.

This is pretty bad, but by Chase Rice standards that's pretty good. The song itself is basically a Luke Bryan b-side, so there's logic in releasing it, but man does his voice sound rough on this. I don't see this as a future #1 (it just strikes me as a song that will have a high burn rate), but sadly I wouldn't be surprised to see it hang around forever and make the top 15.

How on earth is this #7 on the all genre iTunes chart? people must like bad music. This song is an abomination.

Well Chase Rice is an emerging name in the genre whom already has a decent fan base to begin with. He also made a song that's pretty edgy and fits the scope of what's popular in today's rap music. Frankly I would have been more surprised if this was not selling great.

The adds date is February 29th, according to AllAccess.
I haven't heard it yet (and I'm not exactly in a hurry to, either).

To me this isn't even radio friendly. Production is a mess, no real melody, lyrics are so annoying...just comes off as a really creepy song.
Hopefully less songs like this and more like "Beach Town" and "Carolina can" on the album.

Good lord this is an atrocious song. I'm not surprised at all because I honestly expected as much coming from Chase Rice, but yikes... this is just bad. His vocal performance on this is one of the roughest things I've heard in awhile for anyone who is a semi-established star.

cough cough I don't mind this... Is it a great song, no!, certainly not but there are worse travesties doing great on the chart. [Not that I long or ask for more of them to pop up and chart] Is it country, well, actually no from a purist's point of view (can't wait to read whether trigger got an infarct at SCM) but it has enough instrumentation to just fit in. It's lyrically dumb (what a shocker!) but in no way comparable to Ride or being a sequel thereof as suggested somewhere in this thread. The production could be a bit clearer and crisper, otherwise it's catchy and has a cool vibe. I can relate to the target demographic sapping this up. Chase's vocals are limited, so I will not comment on that. Love the electric guitar solo [Yay!] besides the recurrent banjo that is cleverly used throughout. This is the lead single and these always tend to be on the controversial side; so I'm confident that he matured and kept the real good stuff for the album. ;)

Most Chase Rice songs are an absolute embarrassment and this one is just kinda bad, so I guess that's a step up.
I can see his frustration though. If this is a holdover from the last era and his label wants to push it to drive sales, his hands are kind of tied.

I really don't think this is gonna do well. Not catchy, not good, edgy lyrics, not really safe at all for radio either. I just don't think it's something many people outside of maybe college kids are gonna want to hear on the radio.

I just don't think it's something many people outside of maybe college kids are gonna want to hear on the radio. I'm in college and I despise this song. But I'm the weirdo I guess... I do get the argument that this will be polarizing but I thought "Ready Set Roll" would be polarizing as well but that song hit the top 5; granted, it didn't hit #1 but the age of the song being first promoted by RPM contributed to that song not reaching the summit. "Whisper" is just creepy -- there's no better word for it, for me. I literally am put off by this song's lyrics, vocals and production. I hope this song is just too much for Country radio but this is the same radio format that sent nearly a dozen songs to the top 5 that I would have deemed "polarizing" before they were released as singles, the past several years.

I don't understand what's so creepy about it. It's about having sex with someone else and being really into it and turned on by someone else. Is the word "creep" being thrown around because Chase is the one singing it and people are put off by his demeanor or is it creepy because of how explicit it is? It's obvious everything is consensual in the song so there's no stalker or rape vibes coming from it. It's just about passionate sex, something millions of people do when they're really attracted to someone.
