I like this more and more every time I hear it. He moved 54-48* on Billboard last week, and is close enough to the songs ahead of him that a decent week this week should put him in the top 40, or close to it at least. It was close, but Eric moved 48-40*, just barely edging out William Michael Morgan for #40.

This one isn't really blazing any trails. It's moving steadily at radio and the sales are mediocre, but this is not shaping up to be one of his bigger hits like "Springsteen" or "Give Me back My Hometown". I think they whiffed on this release - don't get me wrong, this was definitely single worthy and I would have supported it's release eventually. But with "Mr. Misunderstood" being a little underwhelming for a surprise lead single from one of the format's bigger stars, I think "Round Here Buzz" should have been the only song in consideration. I think that one would and will connect much more strongly to country radio listeners. I think the wittiness of this one might go over the head of many listeners, whereas "Round Here Buzz" is a little more straight forward.

Eric said on his interview on The Highway this morning that nobody in his label knew of the surprise album (Mr. Misunderstood) until the moment before it was released. The UMG president Mike Dungan, only knew six days before its release according to Eric. He said he made all the necessary arrangements with retailers ahead of time for distribution.
He also said the next album would probably be another surprise release. Really cool insight. I'm sure the audio will be on The Highway's home online page.

Behind the Song:
Eric - "I've been actively listening to music for at least 34 years and how in the hell this idea has made it and nobody's though of it..."

This song is really starting to slow down, hopefully it'll pick back up but I'm begining to worry that it might be about done. This and "Mr. Misunderstood" have become two of my favotite songs from Eric, I don't understand why they've performed so poorly at country radio. I hope that "Round Hear Buzz" will be the third single, I think that song could definitely return Eric to the top of the charts.

This one's slowed down as it has climbed the charts (which is natural, for most artists singles) but I doubt its done. "Record Year" has gained over 1.0 million in audience this tracking week with two days left and its only 11 weeks old (currently in the Mediabase top 20 rolling chart and Billboard Airplay top 20). This one always sounded more radio-tailored than "Mr. Misunderstood" so I definitely think EMI will push this for a while yet. It might end up only peaking around the top 10 (the competition right now with new Luke, Blake, Keith, Kenny and Carrie singles is not helping any song below the top 10 -- all those song were essentially released at the same exact time, lol) but I definitely don't think its done.

Round Here Buzz is definitely a #1 and he needs one badly. It's catchier than Record Year, and that's all that you need these days chart-wise.

This song is only 11 weeks old and I think it's doing just fine. It's not gonna blaze up the charts as quickly as the new tunes from Blake, Luke, Kenny, Keith, and Jason, but that's because all of their songs (aside from Luke's) are from albums that haven't come out yet.
I expect "Record Year" to chart well into the summer and be at least a top 5 hit for Eric, if not a #1. "Round Here Buzz" is a hit in-waiting, but there's no reason to rush it out (who knows, it might not even be the next single). "Record Year" will be a hit, but it's just gonna see a slower and steadier rise.

So annoying, but why does Sirius/XM The Highway never play "Record Year"? They only play "Three Year Old". I like "TYO" but I don't think Church ever releases "TYO" to radio, and "RY" is an awesome song. Does anyone know why they do this?

The label isn't pressuring The Highway to play the actual single so they're just playing what they want to. They do this sometimes and while it's frustrating, I just don't personally care enough to be bothered by it. I'm sure if "Record Year" gets to the top 10, you'll start hearing it.

That video was kind of underwhelming. My usual complaint of music videos not sticking to the lyrics is annoying. I know music videos aren't a big deal anymore, but when the lyrics of a song paint a certain picture I like seeing a (mostly) true visual representation of that.

I like the video. Nice that they brought back Mr. Misunderstood! For me this song is so personal I probably would never think of the video while hearing the song. And Eric has such a commanding presence they could stick a camera on a him in an empty room and I would enjoy watching him.
My station has finally gotten in early with this one, playing it on the regular. Love hearing it in my car. They were so late with Wrecking Ball it was a joke.

I actually liked the video, too. It's simple, but I thought it was effective. The way that they put the records on the barbell was pretty cool. I wonder if they'll keep using Mr. Misunderstood in every video from the album.

Had this song playing in my car and when I got to the toll booth tonight, the collector said, "Great song; love it!"

This is one of my favorite songs of the year so far. The chorus is an absolute earworm without subjecting to fluff lyrics (in fact the lyrics in this are actually quite witty and cerebral). I just wish radio was jumping on this one faster.

I just wish radio was jumping on this one faster. I feel like the only reason this one has had to "settle" for a steadier climb instead of a fast one is because of all the heavy-hitters in the top 20 right now: Dierks Bentley, Chris Young/Cassadee Pope, Blake Shelton, Thomas Rhett, Tim McGraw, Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, and Carrie Underwood, plus a few emerging stars. Many of those artists' songs are lead singles, and the others were gonna be huge hits, too -- radio loves duets so "Think Of You" was always gonna be a hit, Thomas Rhett's "T-Shirt" was following up a 6-week #1, and "Humble and Kind" is one of McGraw's biggest hits in years. Keith's "Wasted Time" is acting somewhat like a lead single, too, since it came out prior to Ripcord and is essentially the album's 'launch' single. And finally you've got Luke and Carrie, two of the biggest stars in the genre, who go top 2 with everything they release. Blake, Kenny, and Jason are 3 of the very biggest artists on radio, so their lead singles were definitely gonna fly up the charts. I see Eric slipping back to the rear of the pack, and probably following Carrie to the top of the charts, although he'll definitely have to keep his eye on FGL's "H.O.L.Y." in the rearview mirror.

Refreshing to see this one doing well. Looking like a future #1.
Saw Eric in concert the other night, and am just completely stumped as to how Luke Bryan/Aldean win EOTY over this guy every year.
I've seen both Luke and Jason live before, and it's not even a competition. The intensity displayed by Church in his live shows is unlike anything I've ever seen before. Such an amazing connection with his fans, who sing every word to not just the hits, but the album tracks. While Luke Bryan dances around like a little girl and Aldean sings about dirt roads, not to mention that, for the most part, they don't write their own songs. Totally unfair.
Such a big difference between a guy who gives his all on the stage/has written every song he's ever recorded, and the garbage that Bryan and Aldean have turned into.

I agree, I'm so glad this picked up in the last week. I hardly ever hear it on the radio but hopefully it continues to rise up the charts. I like Aldean and Bryan in concert, but I agree Eric is an awesome entertainer. Always love his shows. He and Keith Urban are by far my favorite live performers and I go to a ton of concerts every year! Hopefully one day soon, Eric will start winning some of the many awards he deserves!

This is top 5 now, and I've been hearing it on the radio a lot for the last several weeks -- definitely not complaining though! This should have no trouble moving to #1 after Jason, Carrie, and FGL clear out. Jason will probably start down this week, and Carrie will probably only get 1 week at the top. I could see FGL trying to sit at the top for 2-3 weeks but I think Eric would be able to wait them out if that proves to be the case.
Chris Lane is about 2.3 million behind and is probably (and unfortunately) going to hit #1 before all is said and done, but I don't think Eric will have to worry about him. Chesney's "Noise" is done, Jon Pardi won't peak until after Eric does..."Record Year" is really in a pretty good position.
As for the next single, Eric performed five Mr. Misunderstood tracks at CMA Fest last month: "Knives Of New Orleans", "Mr. Misunderstood", "Chattanooga Lucy", "Record Year", and "Mixed Drinks About Feelings". Most of the big name artists had their performances taped, and as far as I understand it, at least one song from each artist will be televised on the upcoming CMA Music Festival: Country's Night To Rock special on ABC on Wednesday, August 3, hosted by Thomas Rhett and Brett Eldredge. Quite a few artists likely performed their current or future singles last month, knowing that the televised event would be a great opportunity to have those songs on TV.
I can't see Eric releasing "Chattanooga Lucy" as a single, but I wouldn't put it past him to release "Knives Of New Orleans". After all, he often alternates between a radio-friendly song and a more unconventional choice; "Creepin'" following "Springsteen" seemed to start the trend, and then during The Outsiders era, he started off with the title track (which peaked at #25), then came "Give Me Back My Hometown" (#1), "Cold One" (#20), "Talladega" (#1), and "Like A Wrecking Ball" (#11). "Mr. Misunderstood" peaked at #15, and "Record Year" looks to be heading to #1, so maybe he'll give us something more unconventional next? If he does, then I could see it being "Knives Of New Orleans".
However, I think it'll either be "Mixed Drinks About Feelings" (which has always sounded like a hit single to me) or a song he didn't perform, namely "Kill A Word". The message of "Kill A Word" is so relevant right now, given the recent tragic events that have happened in our country, and I think the song would resonate with a lot of listeners. That would still leave them with "Knives Of New Orleans", "Mixed Drinks About Feelings", and "Round Here Buzz" as choices for the 4th and 5th singles (and 6th if they go that deep, but who knows, maybe they'll stop at 5 or even 4...I think we'll get at least 5 for sure, though).

"Round Here Buzz" or bust. I like some of the other songs, especially "Kill A Word", but "Round Here Buzz" is completely radio friendly, written extremely well, and is a huge hit in the making. It seems more like the same style as "Springsteen" and "Give Me Back My Hometown". But unfortunately, I'm probably expecting "Kill A Word" next.

Assuming there will be 2 more singles left, the choices should be 2 of Round Here Buzz/Kill a Word/Knives of New Orleans. With all the hate going on in the world right now, I do feel as though Kill a Word would be a giant smash.

"Round Here Buzz" is an obvious potential smash, but "Kill A Word" could be downright huge right now, and possibly even score some award show nominations. I don't think "Round Here Buzz" is the type of song that would boost Eric's profile like "Kill A Word" would. RHB is one of my favorite songs on the album and I agree that it has a similar style to a couple of Eric's past big hits, but I don't think it would be as big as "Springsteen" was..."Kill A Word", on the other hand, could be one of his biggest hits in a while.

If I had to put money on it..."Kill A Word" will be the next single.
"Round Here Buzz" could always be saved to close out the album.

"Round Here Buzz", "Kill a Word", and "Knives of New Orleans" are really the only three radio friendly options left on the album that haven't already been singles, so I think you are definitely right in picking those three options. Hopefully all three of them can be singles since they are all great songs. I am 100% on the "Round Here Buzz" train it needs to be a single. Hoping EMI goes "Kill a Word" then "Round Here Buzz".

I'm psyched this has performed so well and is shaping up to be another #1 hit for Eric. I was a little worried the clever lyrics wouldn't connect well with the general public, but the strong sales and streaming have proved me wrong.
