Am I the only one unimpressed with these numbers? I'm sure you're not. I'm keeping in mind that she has split the digital and physical releases, so she could sell another 70-80k or so that way. But even so, 125k does feel underwhelming...after giving away a million for free (and a million is usually what her albums actually sell) I'm not sure what I expected though, so *shrug* Good on her for getting anyone to pay for it, I guess.

I don't think we can really judge this release, considering that the rollout doesn't play by any conventional rules. Kind of like Jay Z's Magna Carta and U2's Songs of Innocence. A bunch of people have downloaded ANTI for free, so it's really hard to tell how successful the album's gonna be, or what it does for Rihanna in the future. It could be setting up Rihanna for a few platinum releases later on.

This is so weird. I would use JAY-Z as an example but I don't really know how that far would go in the discussion. They should've went the same route as Magna Carta Holy Grail by repressing it's purchase/streaming window but only letting the album be up for free download. He released the free download to certain Samsung phones on the 4th of July but did not put it for sale on iTunes and other retailers alongside it. With that strategy, even though he wanted those downloads to count towards Soundscan, he was still able to achieve a huge 528K debut when the album was released both physically and digitally the next week. Tidal putting the album up for stream was the Achilles heel at the end of this messy ramp up.

It's about what I expected for her.
Curious to see Sia's numbers.

125K SPS is OK considering how this messy has been.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=299512Monday, February 1, 2016 NEW RELEASES, NEW NUMBERS Rihanna’s ANTI may already have been certified platinum, but the million copies given away to fans (paid for by Samsung) will not factor into her first-week total, which is based only on consumer purchases. 16k of her SPS total (streams and single sales) won't count for this week, as they happened on Thursday. But that won't necessarily prevent her from being #1 on our next Album and SPS charts. Here’s how the week’s new releases are shaping up. Rihanna (Westbury Road/Roc Nation) 95-105k album, 120-130k SPS Kevin Gates (Bread Winner's Association) 75-80k, 80-85k Sia (RCA) 70-75k, 80-85k Charlie Puth (Artist Partner Group) 45-50k, 60-65k Dream Theater (Roadrunner) 23-26k, 25-27k Tedeschi Trucks Band (Fantasy/Concord) 17-20k, 18-21k

Around 100K for pure sales is solid and well she'll get the #1 That's also decent for Charlie Puth and Sia

Yeah right, the sales suck. Why do people keep trying to take up for this girl? She's a huge star and she's flopping hardcore with such a massive YEAR long promotional campaign. She's literally about to sell the same as Kevin Gates someone I barely know anything about. The Samsung platinum in an hour deal was a fraud and would have worked for pretty much any big celeb. It's not noteworthy, and will never be.

There's at least some precedent for this. A recent Ellie Goulding single (I'm 99.9% sure it was "On My Mind") came out early Thursday (like...in the afternoon, not at 11:30PM), and sales from its opening day were included in the subsequent tracking week. It's never happened for albums, that's why there's always been Street date violations since SoundScan appeared. And this is not even half an hour early, we're talking about a day and a half because the album was up on Tidal on Wednesday, and they claim the free copies were done after 15 hours or so. Didn't this already happen some 10 years ago with a 50 Cent album or something? I recall an album that was released on the weekend, and the first days were withheld and added to its first full week of sales. I might be wrong though.

Yes, it happened for Before I Self Destruct in 2009. I don't remember the exact amount of extra time, but it was at least one full day. From Wikipedia: the album was released exclusively to iTunes on November 9, and was physically released in stores on November 16, a week later. Due to this unique circumstance, 50 Cent's label Interscope requested that Billboard and Nielson Soundscan delay charting the album for a week, so the first week digital sales were added to the total amount of albums sold between November 16 and 22. So I understand first week figures for this actually represented two whole weeks.

Great sales for the album! Rihanna is really killing it with this. Million copies for free and still doing 130k! She's never been an album artist, but she is still doing 6 figure numbers, getting a #1 (not debut, but thats just the way the charts played out), and getting buzz on the hot 100. Plus, she will get many urban #1 smashes and Urban/RHY airplay plus song digital downloads can be strong enough to give her several more top 10s at the very least.

It's not noteworthy, and will never be. I don't think anyone is really trying to argue that 120-130k SPS is great. People are 'taking up' for her because frankly, expecting great numbers under the circumstances was unrealistic. Most people interested in paying for a Rihanna album had the opportunity to not have to pay for it, she doesn't have a history of massive opening week numbers anyway, and it's only available digitally. It just occurred to me that she probably planned to release it in full next week, but the leak on Thursday screwed things up so much that she had to go ahead and bring the Samsung deal and digital release up to minimize the damage. And also that "year long campaign" was actually just her kicking the can down the road and pissing off a lot of her fans with the unnecessary wait. The more informed ones knew about several of these songs several months to over a year ago, which refutes the idea that this was a rush job. In fact, it makes one question why she sat on the album all this time. People were bending over backwards to find ways to say FFS and BBHMM weren't successful enough and that their performance (along with American Oxygen, trufax flop) is what had her shook and running back to the studio...but now we're supposed to believe that it was all a lengthy campaign that should have led to better numbers? Ok.

I don't still understand where that 400k comes from. Even put together all the sales for the album in the world for the first week, it's not 400k. Free copies are different story of course

^It was probably an intern at Tidal talking to the media who had no idea what they were talking about! lol Idiots.
3 years after her last studio album, Rihanna did not need this deal to move albums.
She needs better management.

Gurl please, her album would've sold 110-140k with or without the Samsung deal. The people that got it for free got it because it was "free". Trust that.

RIRI RISING
Despite a vexed rollout for her ANTI (Westbury Road/Roc Nation), Rihanna looks to be headed for a #1 album bow on this week's charts, with a likely 110k albums and 140-150k SPS (driven largely by sales of single "Work").
Stay tuned for updates.

Bought it on ITunes but I'll probably order a physical too since the booklet is apparently flawless.

Song bird rebirth unearthed creature Submerge from hurt pain broken pieces Emergency heartbeat increases Rise up LotusANTI rise this is the beginning This is the beginning YOUR TOP 15, BROUGHT TO YOU BY RIRI Based on early reads, it looks like Rihanna's highly anticipated, surprise release, ANTI (Westbury Road/Roc Nation), will top this week's album sales chart with approximately 110k despite its rocky roll-out. Keep in mind that's a strictly digital number, as the physical version won't street 'til this Friday (2/5). XL/Columbia's Adele will consequently slide down to #2 again in her 11th week out. *Rihanna (Westbury Road/Roc Nation) 105-115k sales, 145-155k SPS Adele (XL/Columbia) 90-95k, 107-112k *Kevin Gates (Bread Winner’s Association) 85-95k, 95-105k *Sia (Monkey Puzzle/RCA) 70-75k, 83-88k *Charlie Puth (Artist Partner Group) 50-55k, 66-71k Justin Bieber (RBMG/Def Jam) 27-32k, 68-73k Chris Stapleton (Mercury Nashville) 25-30k, 30-35k *Dream Theater (Roadrunner) 23-27k, 24-28k David Bowie (Columbia) 23-28k, 24-29k Panic! At the Disco (DCD2/Fueled by Ramen) 18-22k, 28-32k 2016 Grammy Nominees (Republic) 18-22k, 18-22k Coldplay (Parlophone) 16-20k, 21-25k Twenty One Pilots (Fueled by Ramen) 16-20k, 41-45k *Tedeschi Trucks Band (Fantasy/Concord) 17-20k, 18-21k Kidz Bop 31 (Razor & Tie) 17-20k, 17-20k hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=299533
