Adele Named IFPI Global Recording Artist of 2015
2/8/2016 by Lars Brandle
It’s official: Adele was the most popular recording artist around the world last year.
In a surprise to absolutely no one, the British singer and songwriter has been crowned IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year for 2015, an award which recognizes the top artist across physical sales, downloads and streaming.
Ed Sheeran came in at No. 2, just ahead of Taylor Swift at No. 3. Others cracking the top 10 were Justin Bieber, One Direction, Coldplay, Maroon 5, Sam Smith, Drake, and The Weeknd.
Adele’s latest honor was driven by the October release of her comeback single "Hello," which topped the singles chart in more than 30 countries worldwide (and has upwards of 1.13 billion hits on YouTube), and of course the album it was lifted from, the all-conquering 25. Since its Nov. 20 release, 25 has clocked up worldwide sales of more than 15 million (including more than 8 million copies sold in the U.S).
“I’m delighted to be able to honor Adele as the most popular global recording artist of 2015,” comments IFPI chief executive Frances Moore on Adele’s triumph. “Her album 25 has been the runaway global sensation of the year, breaking records across the world and reaching a vast audience of fans. All of the artists in our top 10 chart have achieved incredible success – and Adele’s achievement is simply phenomenal.”
According to the trade body, the artist award and top 10 chart is the first and only ranking to accurately capture the popularity of artists across streaming channels, alongside digital and physical album and singles sales on a global basis.
Adele is just the third recipient of the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year award, following Taylor Swift and One Direction. She has four more opportunities to add to her well-stocked trophy cabinet at the Feb. 24 Brit Awards in London.
