I still remember when Simon said Carrie's going to win and will sell the most records of any other idol winner after she performed ALONE. That was really a starmaking performance

Next 5: Jennifer Hudson Jordan Sparks Adam lambert David archuleta Josh gracin Mandisa? My mistake . Mandisa would replace josh gracin at 15 and has sold about 50k more than him with sales of ~850k

That was really a starmaking performance That would have been a bold prediction regardless but consider that was Top 11 week in March of 2005, when "Since U Been Gone" was peaking. Incredible moment for Simon and Carrie.

Interesting, the only 2 contestants, winners or not, to go on and become lasting stars worthy of the show's popularity.

It would definitely take a very long time I think Carrie has a decent shot. Counting her greatest hits , she has sales of about 16.4 million right now. By the time the storyteller era ends she ll be just under 17 million. I think Carrie could easily moved a million units of a Christmas Cd . That puts her at 18 million. That leaves 2 million to go from future albums and catalogue sales

^16.4 million? Is the number in the OP not counting hits albums?
So that means Kelly's number is off as well in that case. Are Christmas albums counted in the OP?

I think those might be worldwide numbers ? They are substantially higher than the American numbers

Yeah, the Wash Post article states that all numbers are approximate and either came from the artists' reps or from Wall Street Journal data, so it makes sense that everyone would give the WW stats out. It makes them all look even better (especially Adam - he has barely sold 1 million in the US, but touting 7 million really emphasizes his international appeal).
The dropoff within Billboard's top 10 list is such a bummer; it pretty much emphasizes Idol's biggest Achilles heel, which was producing viable long-term stars. Getting their winners solid debut success was never really a struggle, but creating a Kelly/Carrie was a more elusive task than it should have been.
