This was released in late 2013 and was a surprise release. It sold over 2 million copies domestically, spawned several hit singles, and received critical acclaim.

After the commercial disappointment of "4," the surprise release was a brilliant move and is definitely cemented in pop culture history. But I have to admit that I don't think the album is as flawless as I did upon its release. About half of the album stuck for me, and I have no use for the rest. Either way, I appreciate the risks she took (for her) and for making the album feel like an event.

I thought this was excellent when it was first released, but I hardly listen to any of it anymore. Didn't hold up.

A lot of people hail this record as complete, all killer no filler, greatness. Eh, to me it was never all that. I remember the night it dropped and turned the world upside down; I still believe that was basically the reason it sold as much as it did. Without the novel way it was released, I think it would need several killer tracks to work as singles to outsell 4, which this record lacks.
Anyway, like Live Your Life, I use about half of the album - those tracks being "Haunted," "Drunk In Love," "Blow," "Partition," "XO," "Rocket" and "Superpower" - but it's not like I listen to those a lot either. I deleted the rest. The song I really loved from that era was "Standing On The Sun" and I remember LOVING her surprise performance of it in 2013. I was disappointed when she didn't put it on the album; thankfully a remixed version was on the re-release.
I thought all of the videos were stellar. She did a great job representing the album visually.

I haven't listened to the entire album in a while. I still use "Drunk In Love", "Mine", "Partition", "Blow", and "No Angel".

By far her best album to date. It stuck with me well after the release as well.
Mine > Drunk In Love > Partition > Haunted > XO > ***Flawless > Jealous > Blow > No Angel > the rest

After B'Day, this is my favorite from her. XO and Pretty Hurts are dull, especially the latter (but not as bad as the very few low points on 4), and her ode to her daughter falls into the same eh category as many many other similar songs. She and Frank Ocean can keep Snoozerpower too.
Most of the rest is incredible though. Haunted, DIL, Partition, Jealous, No Angel, and Flawless are all shining career highs for her. I liked the re-release tracks and remixes as well.

I love the initial surprise & impact it had when it dropped. The album still sounds fresh & I love most of the album (I will never claim 'XO', at all). The huge problem I had with this era was obviously the singles choices & their order, the lack of promotion & how they crammed everything so early in the era (though I understand they wanted the body of work to speak for itself) & not listening to what radio/the fans wanted to hear.

"Changed the game with that digital drop. Know where you was when that digital dropped."
This was an event.
Easily my favorite Beyonce album. It gave me everything I wanted from her; Emotion, sex, vocals, vulnerability..etc.
Prefer it to Lemonade any day.

This is Beyoncé's worst album, and a massive disappointment. I wasn't a fan of 4, but this had even worse songs on it. The only song I liked was XO, Flawless was full of flaws, Drunk In Love is basically Crazy In Love if both Beyoncé and Jay-Z were drunk with no good elements, 7/11 is... ugh f**king atrocious, Pretty Hurts tries way too hard to be condescending, and Partition is just flat-out boring. I give this album a 2/10, no recommendation.

3rd in the line of succession to the throne for me, but what a great album this is. Top of her game for sure.

"Pretty Hurts" and "Haunted" are my favorite songs but I hardly listen to them because I hate the intros.

The industry was shook with this one, for sure. I prefer this over Lemonade. I LOVED Jealous, I overplayed that one.
My only gripe is that Grown Woman is not on the damn tracklisting! That song is ABSOLUTELY fire.
