I'm gonna look this person up but has anyone heard of this Sturgill Simpson? Country singer who released two critically-acclaimed albums, the latter of which sold about 200k despite no hit single. Both of these albums were released by an independent label, whereas Atlantic Records is releasing the new album.

Also, I hope Sturgill takes the SPS #1.
Unless Beyonce does indeed surprise release her album...

Not Rih making up for the last three albums that couldn't make it to #1 before Unapologetic. But yeah, sales are the absolute pits. I see album sales becoming totally irrelevant in the next few years.

I really hope Sturgill gets that #1. His last album was one of my favorite albums of 2014 period, and this one is honestly almost as great (not quite as great, due to that last album pretty much capturing lightning in a bottle, but oh well). You should all check out his stuff, regardless of whether or not you like country (though I wouldn't call him completely country either. He experiments with the genre a LOT).

People constantly complain that streaming is "inflating" sales but when pure sales are this bad they should understand why the industry is wanting to move on! After the illegal downloading disaster in the early 2000s I don't blame them for trying to stay ahead of the curve.

Not Rih making up for the last three albums that couldn't make it to #1 before Unapologetic. Not really as GGGB is the only album of hers that peaked at #2 behind T-Pain of all people. Rated R reached #4 while both Loud and Talk That Talk peaked at #3.

It had nothing to do with WHERE they peaked below #1

It's Sturgill Simpson vs. Rihanna for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart
4/20/2016 by Keith Caulfield An unlikely battle is brewing for the No. 1 slot on the next Billboard 200 albums chart. Sturgill Simpson’s new A Sailor’s Guide to Earth and Rihanna’s Anti are both eyeing the top of the tally, as industry forecasters suggest both sets could earn somewhere around 45,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 21. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new May 7-dated Billboard 200 chart is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, April 24. A Sailor’s Guide to Earth is Simpson’s debut effort for Atlantic Records, and follows two earlier albums, released through Thirty Tigers. The singer/songwriter's last album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, was released in 2014. It debuted and peaked at No. 59 on the Billboard 200 and No. 8 on Top Country Albums, and has sold 192,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music. The set garnered a Grammy Award nomination for best Americana album. His first album, High Top Mountain, was released in 2013 and reached No. 11 on the Heatseekers Albums chart the following year (it missed the Billboard 200). Meanwhile, Rihanna’s Anti could stage a return to the top slot, for a third nonconsecutive week at No. 1. The pop diva's Anti has the edge in SEA and TEA, thanks to the popularity of the songs on the album -- like the reigning Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single “Work.” Forecasters suggest Anti could sell around 10,000 to 15,000 in traditional album sales for the week, while the rest of its total units will be comprised of SEA and TEA. The math is flipped for Simpson’s album, as the bulk of its units will likely come from pure album sales -- over 40,000. Elsewhere in the top 10, look for Santana to notch its 14th top 10 album, as Santana IV could start in the region with perhaps 30,000 to 35,000 units.

Honestly i'm rooting for Rihanna, I love the album and the meltdown over the BB200 #1 album selling around 10k will be amusing.
Album sales are going the way of the physical single sales. They will never be taken out of the chart calculations but won't make much of a difference in a couple years.

PURPLE TSUNAMI: PRINCE TOPS HITS ALBUM CHARTS Just 24 hours ago, Sturgill Simpson had #1 locked up. Not anymore. We can report that The Very Best of Prince will be #1 on both charts, despite the absence of a streaming component—Prince refused to play in that sandbox. The album will be somewhere in the 85-100k range. More info as we calculate it. ( HDD)

Prince's 'The Very Best Of' Album Headed for No. 1 on Billboard 200 ChartBy Keith Caulfield | April 22, 2016 1:41 PM EDT In the wake of Prince’s death on April 21, the music legend is heading for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with the greatest hits album The Very Best of Prince. If the set tops the list, it will mark Prince’s fifth No. 1, and first since 2006’s 3121. Prince died on the final day of the most recent Billboard 200 chart tracking week, so the chart will reflect the immediate reaction to his passing. Anything beyond that (purchases and streams occurring on April 22 and later) will be reflected on the following week’s chart. Industry sources suggest The Very Best of Prince could earn more than 150,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 21, with between 90,000 and 100,000 in traditional album sales. (Sources say the album sold around 85,000 through the iTunes Store alone on April 21.)The overall total unit figure for The Very Best of Prince is large because of the popularity of its 17 tracks, which includes 13 of his 19 top 10-charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The highlights set -- which was released in 2001 and debuted and (so far) peaked at No. 66 -- boasts iconic tracks like “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Kiss,” and “Purple Rain.” It’s likely that his second-biggest-selling album for the week will be the classic Purple Rain soundtrack, which, according to sources, moved more than 40,000 copies through iTunes yesterday. The album spent 24 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1984 and 1985. Prince’s catalog is selling incredibly well, not just because of the artist’s extraordinary popularity, but also because his music has limited availability on streaming services and YouTube. The only streaming service with access to his songs is Tidal. And, as noted in Billboard magazine’s cover story about Prince in 2013, “you’ll be hard-pressed to find any classic videos or performance footage of Prince on YouTube or anywhere else on the Web. ("'I have a team of female black lawyers who keep an eye on such transgressions,' Prince says. 'And you know they’re sharp,' he adds with a laugh.") Thus, outside of listening to his music on the radio, for many the primary way to experience Prince’s music is to purchase it. Prince has led the Billboard 200 four times previously, with 3121 (for one week in 2006), the Batman soundtrack (six weeks in 1989), Around the World in a Day (three weeks in 1985) and Purple Rain.
