Prince's 'The Very Best Of' Album Headed for No. 1 on Billboard 200 ChartBy Keith Caulfield | April 22, 2016 1:41 PM EDT In the wake of Prince’s death on April 21, the music legend is heading for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with the greatest hits album The Very Best of Prince. If the set tops the list, it will mark Prince’s fifth No. 1, and first since 2006’s 3121. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new May 7-dated Billboard 200 chart is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, April 24. Prince died on the final day of the most recent Billboard 200 chart tracking week, so the chart will reflect the immediate reaction to his passing. Anything beyond that (purchases and streams occurring on April 22 and later) will be reflected on the following week’s chart. Industry sources suggest The Very Best of Prince could earn more than 150,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 21, with between 90,000 and 100,000 in traditional album sales. (Sources say the album sold around 85,000 through the iTunes Store alone on April 21.)The overall total unit figure for The Very Best of Prince is large because of the popularity of its 17 tracks, which includes 13 of his 19 top 10-charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The highlights set -- which was released in 2001 and debuted and (so far) peaked at No. 66 -- boasts iconic tracks like “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Kiss,” and “Purple Rain.” It’s likely that his second-biggest-selling album for the week will be the classic Purple Rain soundtrack, which, according to sources, moved more than 40,000 copies through iTunes yesterday. The album spent 24 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1984 and 1985. Prince’s catalog is selling incredibly well, not just because of the artist’s extraordinary popularity, but also because his music has limited availability on streaming services and YouTube. The only streaming service with access to his songs is Tidal. And, as noted in Billboard magazine’s cover story about Prince in 2013, “you’ll be hard-pressed to find any classic videos or performance footage of Prince on YouTube or anywhere else on the Web. ("'I have a team of female black lawyers who keep an eye on such transgressions,' Prince says. 'And you know they’re sharp,' he adds with a laugh.") Thus, outside of listening to his music on the radio, for many the primary way to experience Prince’s music is to purchase it. Prince has led the Billboard 200 four times previously, with 3121 (for one week in 2006), the Batman soundtrack (six weeks in 1989), Around the World in a Day (three weeks in 1985) and Purple Rain. his power is everywhere. His legacy and his life will live on. Attachment Deleted

F#CK SH!T UP PRINCE!
It's deserved but it's not without a line of accolades to boot. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Grammys, Oscar Award, Golden Globe, Billboard Icon Award, and numerous other superior achievements. He was loved and appreciated before and after with no controversies in-between which makes me smile.

Some trivia: Very Best of Prince initially peaked at No. 66. The Hits/The B-Sides, No. 19. Ultimate Prince didn't previously chart.

What's even more interesting is the The Hits 1 & The Hits 2 also charted separately at 46 and 54, respectively, that same week. In later Soundscan years, they probably would've been bundled for chart purposes - ala Celebration single disc and Celebration double disc, among dozens of others. It's great to see TH/TBS finally (sadly) get a Top 10 peak - it's an outstanding collection.

It's obviously going to outpeak that now. Next week we may see several albums gain new peaks: Prince, Controversy, Dirty Mind...as a lifelong fan it's great to see his back catalog reaching these new milestones but I would much prefer they never sold another copy if he was just still here.

I've so enjoyed his last few albums... so I too would much prefer him alive and well making more music. but i'm also coming to grips with his OVERWHELMINGLY MASSIVE catalogue of recordings. He mastered both quality and quantity like it was a science.

Ironically Prince had almost nothing to do with in TH/TBS - Warner supposedly paid him not to get involved, and he wasn't interested in it at the time anyway because he wanted to launch NPG. A few months ago he said he wanted to eventually remaster his catalog and release a hits set with explanations for how every song came about in the liner notes. Seeing this particular GH set peak in the top 10 is bittersweet for me because it is a great collection, but it only reminds me that he still had so much more to give.

renfield75- thank you for that. I should have checked the Billboard biz archive rather than rely on Wiki to list the peak. Actually, it lists No. 55 as a peak (looks like it last charted in 2012?) I'm not sure, in later years, that The Hits 1 and The Hits 2 would be bundled with The Hits/The B-Sides, as those two titles had distinct titles. I understand why Billboard charted them separate from the bigger release.

That could be correct...I remember it debuting at #61 and double-checked that in Joel Whitburn's Pop Albums book, but that stops at 2009. So I may have missed the #55 re-peak. And I understand why Billboard separated the '93 Hits albums. I was disappointed he didn't get another top ten then but I wasn't mad about it.

His legacy and his life will live on. Of Course it's sad that he died and he was a talented artist, but the more I find out about Prince the more incredibly arrogant he seems to have been (i.e. the lawyer comment and many other tendencies throughout his career). I know this is not uncommon for major pop stars, but he seems to really stand out above the rest. It does bother me somewhat that that part is almost completely brushed under the rug and he is lauded as a saint.

He was very controlling over his own work, maybe more than he should have been but it was his work. Other than that, wasn't he otherwise generally free from controversy?

From what I know, like 90% of Prince's controversy were legal issues related. Kinda like an opposite of Madonna in that aspect, I guess.

I remember reading in Billboard the week that the Hits 1, 2, and the B-Sides debuted that, if they had been counted as one set, it would have entered at #6. Indeed, Geoff Mayfield's Between the Bullets column for that week: (scroll right to the end) www.americanradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/90s/1993/BB-1993-10-02.pdfLooks like Fred Bronson also made mention of Prince's debuts that week in Chart Beat, as he mentions that acts such as The Beatles, Elvis, and The Supremes never even managed 3 album debuts in the same week. Though he would go on to contrast it with the four solo albums from the members of KISS all debuting the same week (October 14, 1978); God knows why he did that. ETA: In hindsight, perhaps it is better that Prince nabbed the newsworthy headline with three separate debuts that week rather than all the albums being bundled together for the #6 debut. Had that happened, it wouldn't have even been the week's top debut - turns out this was the same week that Meat Loaf came roaring in at #3 with Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell, and an apples-to-apples comparison would surely have meant that his debut would have overshadowed Prince's.

Isn't (wasn't) The Hits a 3 disc set? Where did the third disc chart? Or was it never released separately? Yes. But it looks like how it worked was, The Hits 1 and 2 were each available on their own, while the B-Sides disc was only available to those who bought the entire 3-disc set together. So, that week, the 3-disc collection entered at #19. The Hits 1, standalone, was #46. The Hits 2, standalone, was #55.

How does HITS SPS work vs Billboard? I ask because Prince clearly had a lot of streaming for this chart week. Will that carry over to Billboard, too, or do they count things differently?
His streaming is particularly high considering the limited availability.

^As noted in the other thread, TEA plays more of a factor than streaming. Not sure why HITS calls it SPS, when streaming plays a smaller role, overall, in the multi-metric chart.

This has always bothered me too. I personally think it should be called "Sales Tracks Streams." But: A) For the past several years, Hits (and apparently labels) have been regularly reporting album sales data in terms of pure sales + TEA (for a while, Hits was just calling this figure "TEA" - you'll see it any time they post cumulative sales data). So, in that sense, the only *new* component is streaming. B) Technically a track sale is still a *sale* - so Sales Plus Streaming isn't inaccurate.

^True. I don't pay as much attention to that chart as the album sales chart, though, so it's here nor there, really. :)
