ONE-DAYS: DRAKE, BEY, RADIOHEAD

While Drake looks destined for #1 next week—both he and Beyoncé are out physically this week and each may have around 50k in physical sales—the new set from Radiohead (due out Sunday via XL) is the week's wild card. How big a noise will Thom Yorke and his mates make? Stay tuned.

Radiohead Aiming for Sixth Top 10 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Moon Shaped Pool'

Radiohead is set for its sixth top 10 album on the Billboard 200 chart with its latest release, A Moon Shaped Pool. The album, which arrived on May 8, could enter at No. 3 on the May 28-dated chart, with over 150,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending May 12. (It will likely finish in third place behind current champ, Drake’s Views, and Beyonce’s former No. 1, Lemonade, respectively.)

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new May 28-dated chart (where Radiohead may bow at No. 3) is scheduled to be revealed on Sunday, May 15.

A Moon Shaped Pool is Radiohead's first studio album in over five years and follows the 2011 release The King of Limbs. That album debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the chart. The band previously visited the top 10 with In Rainbows (2008, No. 1), Hail To the Thief (No. 3, 2003), Amnesiac (No. 2, 2001) and Kid A (No. 1, 2000).

Views may tally another 275,000–300,000 units in its second chart week, while Lemonade could earn 220,000–240,000 units in its third frame.

Views’ second week will benefit from the album’s wide commercial release to digital retailers (after a week of exclusivity with iTunes) and the bow of its physical CD on May 6. On the same day, Beyonce’s Lemonade arrived on physical CD as well. The latter album was released on April 23 and initially available for sale only through Tidal, but then became available to all digital retailers on April 25.

In terms of streaming availability, Views is still exclusive to Apple Music, while Lemonade is only streaming through Tidal.

Keith Urban and Cole Swindell should also see their latest albums start in the top 10 of the new Billboard 200. Urban’s Ripcord may score around 80,000 to 95,000 units, while Swindell’s You Should Be Here might move 60,000 to 75,000 units.

So far, BuzzAngle has been pretty reliable.

EVERYBODY IN THE POOL

XL's Radiohead, despite having dropped their album on Sunday and thus having had only a five-day debut week, surpasses second-week superstars Drake and Beyoncé to grab the #1 spot on the HITS Album Sales Chart with A Moon Shaped Pool as we head toward the finish line. It's another example of the ever-evolving use of digital services in these changing times—and a fresh indicator of the trailblazing band's ability to mobilize fans.

It's worth reiterating that Radiohead, the members of which have publicly excoriated streaming services, reached this pinnacle with digital downloads alone, as physical retail hasn't yet entered their sales picture. I don't get how Drake manages to pull this big figures. Most of his songs don't seem to have a broad appeal, and he never had a lot of hits, and yet he continues to sell huge. He's had 4 Hot 100 top 10 hits and yet he's had 6 #1 albums. That's not ver common, is it?

When it comes to rappers, hit singles aren't needed to sell albums. This is nothing new - there are many examples.  This kind of volume of sales isn't necessarily common, but his celebrity is massive and he's a household name. And he does have hits. Many.

Drake may not have had pop radio crossover on the majority of his singles (albeit when he does, they do very well) - but he certainly is not short on urban hits.  I encourage you to view his singles discography/chart positions grid on Wikipedia - specifically the R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap columns.  Count those top 10s and those #1s. Drake has the most number-one singles on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart with 12 - and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with 14.

On top of what Broccoli said, where are you getting that 4 Hot 100 top 10 hits stat from. Because he's easily had at least 10 as a lead artist and many more as a featured act.
